When I took my USFS chainsaw course, they told us the requirement for always wearing a hard hat, even in the clear with nothing over head, is to protect your head from kickback. While the chain brake will have stopped the chain before the bar reaches your head, the momentum from the kicking back bar will still leave you with a headache and a cut if you don't have something covering your noggin.

I have one of those depth gauges in with all my files. I got it from either my dad or my grandpa and never knew what it was for. I've been doing a lot of thinning and limbing on my property, along with that I've been doing a lot of sharpening my chainsaw. This will come in handy from now on. Thank you. :)

The hard hat in the field is not stupid. It is actually safety when operating a chainsaw. If the kick back comes up far enough and you don't catch the brake it will give you some protection and could save your life. So your instincts to wear it when operating the saw are spot on!

The very best chainsaw sharpening method that I've ever found. I've used this method for nearly 20 years. Set your saw standing vertical, with the rear handle of your saw on a stump, chair, tailgate, the ground, whatever you like. Standing upright, or down on one knee, place your gloved off-hand on the tip of the bar, so as to keep it upright and stable. Orient the saw so as to have the flat of the bar parallel to your chest. Holding your file in your dominant hand and, in the most natural way for you, set the file onto the tooth which results in the appropriate cutting angle; and which will result in the most ergonomic filing motion. Don't file just yet. Instead, use a magic marker to place a dash on the bar, right at the level of the tooth you just decided upon. You'll manually rotate the chain, in reverse (specifically reverse, so the cutting face of the tooth isn't subjected to debris hiding under your sprocket-cover/side-plate), bring each tooth to this mark. File a tooth; regress the chain one tooth, to your mark: repeat. Don't over-think this. You've already established your angle, which can't change much, so long as you remain in (more-or-less) the same position. It can help a bit to hit the top of your first tooth filed with a dash of your magic marker, so that you don't go all the way around; accidentally filing teeth twice. When you've completed one side, rotate the saw 180 deg (it's rear handle being the axis), and do the exact same thing, but with the file to the other side. This should actually make a lot more sense, when you try it out; as opposed to reading it here. The MAJOR advantages are ergonomics, consistency and uniformity (from one side to the other, even), speed, and teach-ability. I'm right-handed. I'm not actually sure how being left-handed would affect this process, if at all.

Chiesel is a a type of cutter it has a square edge that's appears to be what's on your saw then there is a chip chain witch has a round edge and is less agressive then there is low profile witch is a small tooth good for low kick back and very durable the grinds your are referring to for sharpening are either square grind and as you said is less durable but very fast and round grind witch is slower but more robust

Check out the "Tilda" vise from Svante Hansson. It is a vise you can make in the woods from a high stump with your saw, using a wedge for clamping the bar. Good option if you don't want to carry a stumpvise. And two simple tips for you, clamp the saw upside down, then the body of the saw won't get in the way when you are sharpening. Also, the dept guages should be filed before the cutting teeth, otherwise the fileguage will dull the working corner on your new sharpened teeth, when you use it. Hardhat answers: 1) Logger and foresters like them most because they offer neck protection when you are looking down while cutting 2) The sound of the rain pinging off the metal is very soothing when under high amounts of stress 3) Plastic (polymer) hardhats have an expiration date on them. Here's looking at you Bob Woodcock you Weyerhaeuser jackhole pile of spit, no need to have fired me from a private company logging your wood, you could have just told me to replace it by the next day (Fired 4 times by this jackhole for various reasons, this being the most pathetic) 4) the brim is superior to a front only hardhat (front only lip) as the brim helps shield the eyes from the sun and rain in the peripheral vision while looking up at the sky to watch your Skyline/Skycar 5) easier to keep your eyes on the turn in all weather conditions and at virtually all slopes (while looking up at angle) of the grade being yarded. My old man still has a a painted conk from the 60's that explains the evolution of staying alive in the timber industry. Frankly I prefer the plastic hardhats, I have had small limbs dent and pierce my aluminum brain bucket, but I have never had the plastic fail in any way (and that includes 1500 feet of 7/16 haywire 800 feet in the air coming down right on top of my freaking head). Also to Wa Dept of L&I once you get a dent in your aluminum cap, it must be replaced, and this is a vuisual, they see you have a dent, that's up to a $5000.000 fine if they are having a bad day that day, but with the plastic, they never check for cracks (the squeeze test Mr. W. mentioned) they pretty much just check the expiration date (the ring in the helmet with two hands that looks like a clock, it tells you the expiration date of the polymer)

Hard hat protects you from chainsaw mishaps. If the bar tip jumps you can get one hell of a headache if you get hit from a saw flipping up. Bonus fact: loggers can spray paint aluminum hats which you can then write on to keep your tally. Paint does not adhere to poly hard hats.

I've been running Chainsaws since I was about 14. I B old now. I never had much problem sharpening them, but now, either my eyes, or hands are failing, I tend to get them to cut curves. Is there a device/machine you can recommend that will help me to get the chain sharpened the same on both sides? I really don't want to have to take them to someone who wants my first born or some junk. Love the stuff you present. Thanks.

Oh Cody, you (we, any of us, all of us) do get to wear armour. Some wear protective suits and gear daily. Sometimes to protect from an enemy but more often against some more mundane daily threat such as upright nails sticking from boards all around the renovation site. A hat has a brim to protect you (especially those of us with eyewear) from bright sun and rain and whatever. Your hard hat looks very comfortable to wear, so I fully understand wearing it all the time when felling.
