I worked for Blockbuster in 94 and 95. Not a good experience, but that's a story for another time. Anyway, when they decided to pull the plug on NES rentals, I used several of my meager paychecks, using my advantage as an employee, to snatch up as many previously played NES games as I could. Most of my NES collection was built that way.

Luckily, my video store as a kid was only about two blocks away, so the moment I was allowed to leave the driveway on my bike, it was constant trips there for penny candy, and if I was lucky, a used vhs.

4:44 Ah yes, I see what you mean about the rockin' flowers, but that little dude actually reminded me more of an onion version of ZZ Top. Anyway... I hope I'm not horribly misremembering this, but my recollection is that there was an unofficial way of renting games here in the UK back in the early '90s. You'd "buy" a game from the shop for the full price (e.g. £40), and if you returned it for a refund within 2 or 3 days (whatever it was), the shop would give you your money back minus a few pounds. I think that only applied for a relatively short time, then I think the powers that be tried to stop returns altogether. Before that, cunning kids must have been buying games, playing them for a few days or a week, then returning them for a full refund. My personal memories are of renting NES games the more orthodox way. In the early 1990s, my much older brother would come to stay over at our house on weekends, and we'd stroll round to the local general store on Saturday afternoon and he'd rent a game for me for 24 hours. I think it was only an excuse for him to play it really. Back in those days it was seen as a bit weird for an adult to be playing video games!

Really cool video idea. I was one of those younger kids who inherited an NES rather than getting a Genesis/SNES, and I mostly rented titles on the weekend ("there were dozens of us!"). I did indeed rent TMNT: Tournament Fighters, and my jaw hit the floor when I heard my local store had Mega Man 6. Honorable mention is that now-rare Jetsons game. Life was mostly good for an NES owner in 1994 (except for Mario is Missing... that was a disappointment).

Hi Erin, how are you? Greetings from El Salvador. First time I see a video of you of this type. They are very good for being cataloged by year. I would like one from 1987 if you can. I think Blockbuster had not yet come to my country for 1994. It's funny to imagine that you rented games in that place. I loved the comparison you made between Kirby and Rainbow Brite, because I loved that cartoon. For 1994, my NES had recently been sent to me from the USA, so the only game I knew was the one that came inside: Super Mario Bros. 3 (bundle that I still have complete and in good condition) and a few games that I saw in store windows and drug stores, like Mario is Missing for the SNES. P.S. You look very cute on the thumbnail ;-)
