What is very interesting is that SOME music lovers & audiophiles are a bit too entitled, especially in the comments section. Hi Melinda, I collect CDs (and SACDs), but I call them "albums". I also agree with you on "space issues" concerning the media storage. My listening room is quite small at 12x15 feet or so, and I have to squeeze in a lot. My husband, who loves to do wood-working, built a new CD storage cabinet for me based in part on your example of how you store your vinyl. The organization, for my CDs, is now so much better than it was before. That is a real blessing. About the stereo gear: For most of my adult life I have been chasing gear upgrades. I too hear all the time that "vintage is so much better". That is simply, at least in my experience, utterly false. In fact, current equipment is infinitely better than the vast majority of "vintage". I recently became the proud owner of a pair of Adcom GFA-565 mono-blocs. "But Tasha", you might say, "these are 30 years old." That is correct, except that I had them completely overhauled by a gentleman who specializes in the rebuilding of Adcom amplifiers. He put in up-to-date electronic components and did a few other things. These new components are of significantly higher build quality than what was used OEM. The difference in sound, is phenomenal. Recently, I replaced my Adcom GFP-815 pre-amp (about 7 years old), with a Parasound P6 Halo. Again, a giant leap in sonic performance. As I love the mid-century modern style, I had to get a pair of speakers to match the decor. I tried all kinds of actual "vintage" speakers, most sounded rather dull and lifeless. The best of the true "vintage" I had were Polk Monitor 7s, with upgraded, high-end cross-overs and new tweeters. They sounded quite nice. Then I heard the Wharfedale Linton Heritage, and I just had to have a pair. Here was a speaker that looks "vintage", but is internally ultra-modern in terms of materials and components. There are some analogs from KLH and JBL that are similar, but don't compare. Speakers like the Klipsch Heresy IV, for example, not only are much more expensive but seem to use 40+ year old materials for the drivers and the electronics in their cross-overs is stuck in the early 1980s. I am sure that there are other manufacturers that provide similar, but this has been my experience. I have a vintage CD player, a Pioneer Elite PD-59. What an amazing CD player! The transport is probably one of the best ever created. The onboard DAC, is however, hideous now. It runs through an external DAC. Such a difference. Yet, I have an "up-to-date" Marantz SACD with resolution that often the PD-59 cannot match. Although, the Pioneer reads CDs instantly, while for the Marantz it takes a good bit of time. As far as "new music". As a "mid-80s" girl, surprisingly I love the "classic rock" music from the late 1960s to the mid 1980s. I don't really like, with some exceptions, music after 1986 or so. In fact, I am an absolute fan of the "Second British Invasion". ☺ What I wouldn't give to time-warp myself to say 1984, put on a miniskirt, fishnet hose, stiletto heel pumps, a jacket with the huge shoulders, and go from one concert to another by my favorite bands when they were in their prime, giant hair and garish make-up and all. 🤭😁💗💗💗

I grew up in the 80's and 1984 was my favorite year for music and for life in general as a teenager. It was just as magical as you may think it was. The music changed in the mid 80's and by 1986, the radio was unlistenable. You are so right about that. Thank you so much. I really enjoyed reading this comment. Congrats on your gear, collection and husband. We are blessed. Take care.

@@MelindaMurphy He also built my audio rack too. Although, he will have to work on fixing it. Some of the wood he used has unfortunately warped a bit. 😔 My favorite year in music, I think, is 1982. More specifically my favorite period, it is from 1982 through 1984. The music of that period, and 1984 was a banner year... so many good things. Have you heard Van Stephenson: Modern Day Delilah? I think that, and Van Helen's "1984"(especially "Panama", "I'll Wait", and "Hot for Teacher" on that album) capture the essence of that time period perfectly; as does Bananarama's "Cruel Summer". ☺☺ I wish I could hear your system as well... perhaps with a glass or wine in hand. I have to say, I do love the "analog" sound. I have this passion of cassette-tapes, and own several 3-head / 3-motor decks. When you record a CD onto tape, especially with my Aiwa or Tascam, it gives it that warm analog sound, sort of like a record. Are you on "Audiokarma"? If you are, please do say hello. I am there under "AgentPepsi1" as well. 🤗😁☺

In the 1980s I lived in a student home full of music lovers. Fun times. The CD era started and we simply used the term "Album" for a release independent of the media it was available on (LP or record, CD, or cassette at the time). An album on CD was almost twice the price of the same album on LP or cassette, but the sound from CDs without the ticking, clicking and all that of LPs was amazing.

Melinda, props to you girl and Happy New Year! You know, all of us in the vinyl community collect records for our own reasons. Personally, I still have every record I've ever bought since 1976. I am guilty of selling some of my old records at used record stores to get money to buy the CD versions (I was young and dumb). Luckily, I have been able to replace nearly all of them. I have had several duplicates (and triplicates) that I have accumulated, and I usually give those away to friends and young collectors that need a break from today's prices. I am a fan of hype stickers! I have always removed the shrink wrap, but I always cut out the stickers and kept them inside the album jacket. I'm always surprised when The division Bell isn't loved. To each their own of course. It's an amazing album, but it's also so different from Animals, Wish You were here, DSOTM, or The Wall. I always felt The Wall would be a better album without comfortably numb on it. It's a break, a point to chill in an album of chaos, just my opinion.. David and Roger's styles can clash (and clearly their personalities too), but when they worked together, we get magic.
@MelindaMurphy11 ай бұрын
I think the more I hear it, the more I will like it. My husband loves it. ♥️ I definitely think David and Roger are better artistically when they work together. The Wall is great but could have been edited just a little bit to make it even better. Thank you and take care.

The Division Bell (Pulse) tour was incredible but I admit the album was mediocre, not bad at all but it was a little uninspired. David and Roger have styles that balance well together. Too much Dave and the mellowness can get boring, too much Roger and the government contempt with abrasive vocals puts me in a rotten mood. But together...the beautiful melodies interspersed with flashes of passion and confidence are what made Floyd one of the most important and influential bands of the last 50 years. The Division Bell was OK but if the rest of their catalog sounded like that we wouldn't even be talking about them today.

Hype stickers are a part of the package to me. I keep the shrink on if it’s in good shape. When buying new gatefold records, I remove the shrink and try to remove the hype. If it comes off easily I’ll stick it on the blank lined inner or on the inside of the jacket. Many times the hype contains valuable info like how many pressings etc. I don’t however save the hype and stick it inside loosely. They become a nuisance.
@MelindaMurphy10 ай бұрын
I agree they have so much information and are part of the packaging. I have removed some hype stickers in the past and have regrets. Thank you and take care.
@cradio5211 ай бұрын
I *always* carefully remove my hype stickers from the shrink and then affix them to an outer sleeve. It’s the provenance of the record! Or at the very least, part of the graphic design… I mean, someone had to deliberately sit there and design and type out what’s on the thing, so idk, I just think it’s nice to keep them. I have whole methods for removing various types of stickers, haha, because some come right off while others are practically super glued to the shrink - some stickers take a bit of hair dryer heat, for example, to come off. If it’s one of those old records with a 40 year old hype sticker that comes off instantly because all the adhesive dried out so it no longer sticks to an outer sleeve, then I’ll sit there with one of those adhesive rollers to put some glue on the back of the sticker and then slap it on the outer sleeve. This is the nerdiest part of the way I collect vinyl records, and I love it 😅 Besides, a lot of them have very important info like the ones on The Beatles remixes… in basically all cases, the hype is the only spot where it says this is the remixed version.

It's quite noble of you to respond to these questions but in the end, it's all your choice and your world. I, for one, absolutely love hype stickers and shrink wrap. I'm always doing my best to find vintage albums in the shrink as they are ALWAYS in the best condition. So many love to scream "Shrink wrap warps the records!" In all my now 48 years of collecting VINYL (see what I did there?), this has happened exactly ZERO times. To this day, I'm still annoyed that I allowed some stranger my brother knew to talk me into taking off the shrink wrap of my mid'70s "Beatles VI". This was around 1978 and within a year, the jacket was trashed. Why? Because I didn't have or know about protective covers. Never again became my motto. Also, if I find an album I already have and it's sealed, IT STAYS SEALED. I refuse to ever allow clueless types to attempt to guilt me into opening anything I don't want to open. I'm also done dealing with the disappointment of finding out a record is worth 25% to 50% more if it's still sealed. Just because some schlep goes on a power trip to tell me otherwise is laughable. I now have many, many sealed items and they are staying sealed.......hype stickers and all. As for listening to newer music? I flat out refuse. There's no way I'm going to force myself to listen to songs that go nowhere and are slammed throughout with autotune......and that hellish crutch effect is now everywhere. It's even ruined what should've been the perfect new and last Beatles song (Paul and Ringo's HORRIBLY autotuned backing vocals on the choruses.....grrrrrrrrrrr!). What's great is there are so many artists and songs from yesteryear I've yet to hear. With that in mind, as I buy that stuff, all the music will be brand new to me. I've been doing this for decades but really went into high gear in the 1990s. As a musician, I recall people insisting "Oh! You gotta hear this NEW song! It's awesome! You should learn it!" At the time, I thought, OK. I'll give it a chance. Even if I thought the song was aardvark snot, which most of them were, I'd learn it, and- a few weeks or months later- NO ONE WAS REQUESTING IT ANYMORE. Gee.....I can't understand why? 🙄🙄🙄🙄 Yet, I was hearing....and still am hearing....people scream out "Play the Beatles!" or "Play 'American Pie'!" I'm a dinosaur and proud of it. Anyway, nice video (as usual) and remember to follow your own heart. Use the new equipment......keep the shrink and hype stickers on.......do what's best for YOU. It does wonders for the soul!

Well this was an interesting video, catchy title. I am pleased to see a VC member who respects the benefits and necessity of better and above average performing audio equipment. I am constantly unimpressed with so many record enthusiasts who have these very poor sub-par (crap) stereos in the background. I sold audio equipment for 12 years in my 30’s and learned mountains of info and heard for myself the difference in details and depth in music with more expensive equipment. Now I have mentioned this MUST in improving your set up and to use some of that vinyl $$ towards those improvements. All replied in many negative comments, to me this is a must and really stupid to ignore. Every VC person I most appreciate have upper end equipment, this means they hear what is supposed to be heard. Your take on vintage equipment is correct, never buy these pieces unless you know how to repair. Also new modern well built equipment is far more precise and detailed. Also I thought of myself as you mentioned comments about OG versus New fancy reissues. Sometimes I may get jealous of those who can spend mucho $$$$ on these expensive packaged repressing. Thats it……bye for now.

Another great video and very informative about why you collect the way you do. I'm very much of the mindset that it's your collection and equipment and we each have to do what's right for ourselves, although it was interesting to hear your reasons. As for new music, I find that there's still so much old stuff I've yet to discover that I only get to hear a limited amount of new stuff, some great, some not so much. I do get to hear some K pop courtesy of my lovely daughter and 1 of my granddaughters. It's not for me but they both like it.

Hi Melinda, happy new year to you from Australia. I am guilty actually of commenting to you about hype stickers. I remember 40 years ago talking to a co-worker while working in a record shop together. He asked me, what is the first thing you do to a record when take it home? I said, removing any hype sticker because the artist paid big money to present the cover in a certain way and not have it spoilt by any distracting stickers. The hype sticker is like a price sticker, it's there for sales purpose only. He laughed and said, I couldn't put it better myself. I must say, I have started using the term "vinyl" now instead of record because of all of the different formats available. Sometimes a new release comes in cd and vinyl, cd only or special release vinyl reissue. Now cassettes are said to be making a comeback. We adapt with the changes I suppose. Have a wonderful year.

You were very kind and respectful when you brought up hype stickers. It made an interesting conversation for this video so thank you. ♥️🤗 It took a while but I now say vinyl as well. They will always be records to me because that's what we called them growing up. Thank you and take care.

People are so judgy, Melinda. Live your life. For me, they have been "albums" since my first purchase in '73. I keep shrink and hype stickers on none-gatefolds albums. For gatefolds I trim the hype sticker (leave shrink on the back) from the shrink and slide it between the outer sleeve and cover. My youngest daughter collects and will get the collection when it is time. She pulled out my first Some Girls album (purchased on the day of release, even cut school to do it) and was so excited to see the Miss You hype sticker. I also leave little notes in the covers telling her any back story (My first Beatles album, Grandma gave this to me for Christmas etc.) Some day she will share with her kids that grandpa cut school to buy a Rolling Stones album and she will put it on and think of the day she and I had that moment.

I like that you mentioned keeping an original copy is on a case to case decision and the example you gave was a great example. I’m on a kick right now of buying color vinyl versions of LP’s and the hype stickers are essential to the value of the record. I will even remove them when I get rid of the shrink wrap and place the record in a protective sleeve, the hype sticker goes on the protective sleeve. I too started with records and then cassettes and CD’s, but I can adapt and if you go to any platform that sells them it’s described as “(vinyl)”. I have a vintage kenwood stereo system and either need get it refurbished or replace. The speakers are getting a little deteriorating and the sound has some static noise and not crisp and clear as it was 35 years ago. The one thing I would have a hard thing getting rid of is my linear tracking turntable that can even play one song or in different order by laser reading groves. The only way it wouldn’t work is if there’s more than 8 songs or there’s a long pause in a song. I don’t even know if they produce that kind of turntable anymore. Also I didn’t comment on your previous video “Five years on KZbin”. First congrats on that accomplishment and I have only been watching for about the last year. I enjoy talking to anyone about music and appreciate many styles. I have seen enough that as soon as I start watching a video I hit the like button. I know that I’m going to like it because you’re sharing your journey with vinyl and music collecting. I inherited most of my vinyl collection from my mom and our love of music was always a special bond that we shared. I even remember as a young adult, skipping going to hang out with my friends to go see my mom, order pizza and just listen to and talk about music. As I always say, music is like a Time Machine, it transports us back to the first time we heard it or heard it at a concert. Keep sharing and I will always listen. 👍👍😊

You didn't say if your mom is still around but music has a way of bringing my mom back to me in a real way. I put on records that we used to listen to together and it's almost like she is here. Having memories like that with your mom is such a special thing. I love vintage gear but I don't have the ability to do the necessary repairs and tweaks so I am happy to have new equipment instead. To me, there isn't a right or wrong. Thank you and take care. ♥️😃

I always left the shrink wrap on and would tape them around the edge even on the double lps. Unfortunately I lent my entire vinyl collection (70's and 80's) and turntable to my drug addict brother (RIP?) and never saw any of it again. The only lp I have is my UFO "Lights Out" which I took to a Michael Schenker show to have him autograph. Rant over. lol Love your channel Melinda!

Happy New Year to you both. Sorry to hear you’re receiving criticism but glad to know that most are being thoughtful with their comments. My collection is split between vinyl records and CD’s. Good topic(s). It goes without saying that you don't have to justify how you listen or what you listen to, but helpful suggestions can point you down roads you might consider fun to travel. My long-winded opinion on these topics: 1.) Getting rid of original pressings - I usually keep the nostalgic ones but not the ones that are so torn up that they are unlistenable, especially when I have a higher quality one available. I'm also not one who will have multiple pressings as I will have a go-to copy that I will listen to and never play the others. 2.) Hype stickers - at one time we were advised to take any shrink wrapping off because it would, well, shrink, and start to damage the record/cover so I usually would remove the wrap, cut out the hype sticker, and stick it inside the album cover. Nowadays I will remove it if it is tearing or if it is a gatefold cover that I want to look at. 3.) "Record" as opposed to "vinyl" - I have resigned myself to translating "vinyl" to "record" anytime I hear "vinyl", because I consider those who say "vinyl" are later-comers to record playing trying to use the current hip term; I never used "vinyl" but mostly said "turntable" instead of "record player" because "turntable" to me just seemed to come to mind first. 4.) Old vs. new equipment - As someone who sought out vintage equipment when I restarted my audiophile journey after leaving it for 20+ years, I was trying to capture that sound I imagined in my head of how things sounded back when I wouldn't afford the good stuff. Nowadays after spending too much time trying to hunt down parts for old equipment, I have pretty much given up on vintage. I still have a 1987 Technics SL-1200mkii turntable which I've never had an issue with and an old Nakamichi cassette player (which I rarely use), but that's all. I compare it to having a vintage car - you'd better know how to take care of it yourself or have a cheap available mechanic. Today's equipment is so much accurate, less power hungry, and more compatible with each other in a world where low impedance and digital connections are required features for most of us. 5.) New vs. old music - I have fallen into this trap as well - always heading for the familiar instead of seeking out new. My daughter didn't help in dragging me into the current world because she went retro so she was listening to the same things I was. The thing is, there's so much music that I haven't listened to that I'm now discovering music that was made many years ago so I'm still catching up. I will hear newer music (today's country is so similar to the country rock of my youth) so I will take note of it, but I enjoy artists who sing and harmonize and not simply speak rapid-fire so that cuts me out of a lot of today's music. I remember a time when my parents declined to be interested in the music I was listening to in my youth and I swore that would never happen to me, but it has happened to some extent.
@MelindaMurphy11 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for breaking down each subject. ♥️🤗 I also think of younger people in the hobby when I hear vinyl instead of record. The term vinyl does make sense for today and all of the ways we listen to music. I still prefer to call them records and I never say "I'm going vinyl shopping." Lol. Vintage stereo equipment is awesome but because it requires work, maintenance and a lot of knowledge for repairs, I'm better off with the new equipment. I love the sound quality of my new gear. Thank you and take care.

Hi Melinda! Great topic. As for Originals, shrink wrap, hype stickers, etc., I’m with You. All of these are case by case situations. In some cases, the original first pressings were not the best sounding versions. Sometimes second pressings were released quickly, that corrected issues with the first. The Beatles are a good example of that, which I learned from Andrew at Parlogram. Although that Abbey Rd, isn’t one of those cases. 1st press of that album is Definitely the best sounding. I too love having the hype stickers on the classic records. So often they remind me of seeing them in the store when they first came out. Which is part of the nostalgia factor. But I do not keep the old shrink. Silly but I don’t like the wrinkled up end of the shrink at the opening 😂. So I always give them new vinyl storage solutions sleeves. As for the hype sticker…. what I do (after I remove the shrink) is take an exacto knife and carefully cut the hype sticker off the shrink. Then I slide the hype sticker under the new outer sleeve. Ooh you gave me a new record idea! I want that McCartney Chaos album :). I just got the Division Bell album as well. I have the same opinion as you do regarding the album, but I am enjoying it more on vinyl than I did on cd when it first came out. Have a great day!

Hi Melinda. Whenever I buy new vinyl I will always take the shrink wrap off. But when it comes to hype stickers I really love them, especially when they give little bits of info on the album such as titles of some tracks, the colour of the vinyl etc. I think it's just as much a part of the packaging as the album cover itself. I find that most hype stickers 9 times out of 10 can be peeled off the shrink wrap and I stick them to the protective outer sleeve. And if you want to call them records I think that is absolutely fine. It's personal preference. Some people call them records, and some like me prefer to call them vinyl. Neither of them is wrong IMO. The only small thing that I find a little irritating is when I hear people refer to more than one record as vinyls. I just prefer to say vinyl as the plural word. Take care Melinda, and happy new year to you and your family ❤

Listening to this, what occurs to me is that there's more than one type of collector. Some are music lovers first; others are record collectors first; still others are a bit of both; some are detail-oriented and will fuss over comparatively minor things (e.g. hype-stickers). As for what to call the medium, I tend towards "record" or, more so, "LP" (it's shorter and everyone knows what that is). As for music: if it's new to you, it's new; end of story. And if it's a reissue, the record is new even if the music is old. I'm with you on current music: I have no idea who most of the current artists are. And my tastes changed; if I went to a concert it would be jazz, classical, maybe blues. If I listen to the radio, it's classic rock or classical, maybe an oldies station if I can find one. Today's pop is a turn-off, I like classic country better than the newer stuff for the most part, even if the newer stuff is good; if I listen to gospel, the music must not distract from the message. I guess I'm getting old. 🙂

I agree 100% on new vs "vintage" audio gear, just because (as you observed), the vintage equipment is almost dead certain to break down. Just generally speaking, even new equipment can't be easily fixed. Now that new receivers now mostly have phono jacks, and can be purchased pretty cheaply, it's not worth the risk to spend more for even "restored" equipment that is SO much more likely to break down. HOWEVER-I gotta admit, that as a fan who passed through the short-lived quadrophonic era of 1970-1974, I DID succumb to buying a vintage Technics quad receiver recently, which of course is EXTREMELY cool, and still 100% functional (so far). It's absolutely a leap of faith to buy vintage, but don't give up your modern receiver.

You and I are on the same wavelength pretty much. When I was kid, starting my record collection, I was under the belief that you should remove the shrink wrap, always. So I did. But, I would save the hype stickers. I either tucked them away in a drawer or put them inside the sleeve. Today, I tend to just leave the shrink wrap on them with the stickers. I’ve always called them “records”. Back in the day when CDs came out I remember people saying an “album” was a record and a CD was a “CD”. To me, an album was just a collection of music, it was either on a record or a CD. Lastly, vintage equipment or new? I would love to have my mom’s old stereo console that we had growing up. The thing was about six feet long, with built in speakers and the turntable down inside under a big heavy wooden lid. She sold it when we moved because there was no room for it at the new house. To try find one of those now would cost big $’s. Like you I mostly listen to old stuff these days. New stuff just doesn’t do it for me. I looked it up and this I got roughly 200 albums (a mix of vinyl and CD). Of those 200 only about five were “new” albums. Everything else I got was either a vintage album, or a reissue of an older album.

Thank you for your detailed response. I enjoyed reading your takes. I was able to get my mom's old 60's Motorola console several years ago. My husband got it running again but it wasn't reliable. My niece now has it and goes through the same issues. It's very nostalgic but difficult to maintain. That's probably why I prefer the new equipment. Those old consoles are very cool and I'm sure you would agree that they also bring back so many memories. Thank you and take care.

Melinda I had the same experience with vintage equipment so I bought a new Onkyo amp. glad I did. As far as new music goes, since I enjoy melodic/prog rock it is hard to find new bands to recommend, bands like Gorillaz incorporate rap, into their music so even though I enjoy them, I wouldn't recommend them to most classic rock fans, but bands like Gunship and Cat's in Space I would recommend to anyone. Also as you mentioned a lot of our favorite bands will be calling it quits soon, so I have adapted by accepting "good" cover bands, we are going to see ABBA Mania in a week, can't wait! Thanks for listening.

I too like the Hype stickers. I have found if you remove the shrink and let it sit in a warm place for a while, not in direct sunlight but somewhere at about 90 degrees F the glue on the stickers will soften enough that you can usually peel it off the original shrinkwrap and move it to the same spot on a protective sleeve, then use one of the protective sleeves that are a bit larger (usually made for double or thick album covers), you can put that over all the rest and the hype sticker on the protective sleeve will now also be protected. I'd say I have about a 95% success rate on moving the stickers to protective sleeves. When the glue just won't let go, I just carefully cut around it with an exacto knife and use double-sided Scotch Tape in rows that are the same size (Cut with Exacto Knife as well), so the whole sticker backing which is shrink-wrap stuck to it, is covered in double-sided tape. Then put the sticker on the protective cover. Boom, bang, done!

I'm nearly 64 years old (the Beatles sang about people like me, "When I'm 64"). In my opinion, we already have all the best music in the world available to us, mostly from the 1960s and '70s. I listen to (and have collected) most everything that I want to hear. In my world, "new" music doesn't even need to exist. As long as I've got the music I grew up with, the music I have stuck in my head, that I can sing along with, that makes me feel good, that "speaks to me" then I'm happy. Melinda, you just keep doing what you're doing with what makes you happy. I enjoy your videos very much and appreciate your points of view. We both enjoy certain artists (Beatles, Bob Dylan), but others I listen to I've never heard you mention...so what? I don't talk about groups that I don't listen to either! I've made an effort to keep shrink wrap/hype stickers because they provide me with more info about the record than I would get without them, and if I feel offended by their overlay of the album artwork, well, I cut it off and stick the hype stickers out of the way in the outer sleeves. Yea, back in the day, we called them RECORDS, but now we never know how many media types that particular artist will make available to us, so yea, we have to use whichever media types we CAN get, since so many only come out on CD or streaming. New artists have found it difficult to get into the limited queue available for vinyl pressing, so we sometimes find we have to wait awhile before we can get them on a vinyl record. Lastly, (for me at least), I managed to snag the Pink Floyd "Division Bell" for a good price and I LOVE it. I would also like to acquire "A momentary Lapse of Reason", but it's remained pricey last time I looked. I already have "Dark Side.." The main reason I don't get into new stuff these days is because every time I tune into "Pop" radio, well, it all sounds the same to me, nothing at all really standing out as original, so perhaps it may be true finally........it's all been done. So, it's either all that stuff that came out during those 50 or 60 odd years since Bill Haley and the Comets, or it turns pretty much into noise, and I will not apologize for thinking so. I mean, c'mon, I gave it at least 4 or 5 consecutive generations, and if you can't come up with something new after all THAT, well, I don't blame you, it's just the nature of what makes music what it is. If you want to claim that flat out NOISE is music, well, bless your heart, I will not blame you for thinking so. I personally have more MUSIC in my back catalog than I think I will ever be able to enjoy, and that makes me feel personally fulfilled. But that's just ME.........

I understand. The new music does sound the same to me as well. I would rather spend my time listening to music I can relate to and enjoy than trying to discover brand new music. Thankfully, I got a great deal on The Division Bell as well. What's up with the overly prices Pink Floyd albums? 🤔 Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

I bought an original Van Halen "Women and Children First" with the shrink still on it. I had to remove it because it was bending the cardboard. As soon as I removed it, the sleeve straightened out. Came with the original David Lee Roth poster too. Near mint!

Thought I added my comments but I don't see it...here is the reader's digest version...I don't mind originals or re-press, I have both. Hype stickers I keep, some on the shrink, some I cut off and keep in the record sleeve, new releases the sticker usually peels off and I put it on the outside poly sleeve to appear as if it is still on the record but it's not! I have all old equipment but understand the appeal for new. My listening habits are 50's -90's. I do follow some current bands but you can't listen to everything. Got Harvey Mandel and New Goblin EP from 2013 for Christmas. Great video and take care!

Happy New Year Melinda! I've never understood why people care how we all collect our records, how we store our records, and whether or not I keep the shrink on some and not on others? People never cease to amaze me. If it's not a gatefold and the shrink is on it and it's in good shape....I'm like you, I leave it on. It's such an obvious extra layer of protection for the front and back cover art work. When it comes to vintage gear...it's hit and miss. I still have my 43 year old Pioneer SX 980 Receiver that is still working like a charm but I had to upgrade to a brand new turntable and went with the classic Technics, SL 1200 GR because my vintage Rega Planar 2 became unfixable after many refurbishments.......It became too much of a pain in the ass after a while. I am now on the hunt for a new integrated Amp for my turntable only.....everything else, my tape deck and CD player, will go through my Pioneer receiver. I'm going new for that as well.

Regarding OG's, I bought Abby Road in 1969, so I suppose that's an OG. I paid $7.00 for it. At the time $7.00 was outrageous. Albums at the time were $4.00. But it was The Beatles! The point I guess I'm making is that when I got this record, I was a kid, and had no idea or could care less about its value. It was just a record, I loved The Beatles, had everything they had made and so that was that. But I appreciate where you're coming from, I like when you call a record "vinyl", it totally makes sense in this day and age. I remember buying a B&O turntable in the 1970's. It cost like $900.00. It's been dead for years, by the way. Can't understand why people would whine about buying vintage as opposed to new. About new music, I really like a lot of new music. Quite frankly, I don't really understand spending $100.00 - $150.00 for a vinyl I've heard 500,000 times. I mean, I don't need to hear Crosby, Stills and Nash first album ever again, although it is a great record. Enjoy your channel, Melinda, thanks so much.

It's very cool that you had the privilege of buying an original Beatles album when it first came out. Back in the day, $7 was a lot of money for an album. I have a memory of paying $9 for the Grease soundtrack as a kid. That was a lot of money. The old turntable you own might be worth refurbishing. If I had the knowledge and capability, I may feel different about vintage gear. For me, the new equipment is the better option. Thank you and take care.

Tone Poets and Accoustic Sounds vinyl, I keep the outer bag inside the cover, when I put it into a VSS product, others I cut out the hype sticker and put it inside the front of the new album protector. I'm a long time fan of U2, seen them many times and went to the first two shows back in September. You are in for an experience! It will be nothing like you have ever seen! And for the your first time seeing U2? Wow. Also don't forget to go to the Venetian Hotel and they have a spot in there on the ground floor called "Zoo Station". I sometimes put the hype sticker in an envelope and slide into the sleeve or just inside the protective outer sleeve. I have owned and still own vintage gear and its a gamble whether it will still work tomorrow. I have been through many amps that one random day the left or right channel stops working. So I fully understand why you prefer new, though vintage especially with analogue VU meters look the business, and they can sound amazing if you are willing to spend proper money.

In all walks of life and topics, some people are just overly self-righteous and so I wouldn't pay them much attention. As others have mentioned, you've always been gracious and polite when addressing both positive feedback and naysayers. Keep doing it your way. Here's my feedback: 1. Original versus new: I'm almost 54 years old and at over 1000 records, I am now trying to better "curate" my collection. I only keep multiple copies of albums I'm especially found of. Ex: CSNY - Déjà Vu ( I have a VG+ 1970 original Canadian press, 2022 Chris Bellman for playing and the 2021 RSD Alternates. Another example: this past year I came across a used NM VMP press Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca so I will likely sell my 2009 US. 2. Hype stickers: I keep them all. I either leave them on the shrink (single LP) or peel / cut them out and glue stick them onto my outer sleeve. I think it looks rad and you can remove the jacket to enjoy the cover art. Some find this too tedious (I get it!) but there other like me here for sure and for me it's all part of the enjoyment of collecting: re-sleeving outer / inner when necessary, entering into Discogs and especially spinning and listening them! 3. ALBUMS: Whether on vinyl, cassette or CD, artists record albums. I call them albums, records or vinyl...ut not vinyl(s). That said, if some newer, younger collectors call them vinyl(s), who cares. I do not let their habit of it proverbially "whiz in my cornflakes". Small potatoes, first world problems. 'Nuff said. 4. I have 3 vintage amplifiers. Nothing crazy. A Kenwood from the 90s, and Sansui from the 70s and a Technics from the 70s...but I'm a bit of a tinkerer and have opened them up to clean them. However, if I am ever able to afford it, I would love some new equipment. I totally get your position. My best friend is the same as you :) 5. New versus old music: Once again, at almost 54, I feel I am in the minority for those my age because...I check out A LOT of new music every Friday. It takes a lot of time and effort, but is very rewarding. I sample new releases across all genres each week (but favor (indie) folk, (indie) rock, hard rock, psychedelic rock, dream pop, jangle pop and singer/songwriter. I also track down both jazz and non-jazz audiophile records. You might be missing on some very pleasurable new listening experiences. The VC is also a great way to discover new albums" :) Watching YT vinyl videos and my own curiosity leads me to a musically varied top 10 each year. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Nice coverage. Re hype stickers, I cut them out and put them into the back pocket of the dual pocket sleeves. -- Re available protective sleeves, I got them in the late 80s from my record store. I always took my records out of the shrink wrap and put them into thick sleeves. -- Re "records", the more generalized term I see is "release", which certainly applies to digital-only music. -- Re new music, there are plenty of new artists who sound like old bands. E.g. Creux Lies out of Sacramento are dead ringers for Depeche Mode. Don't know about hard rock (Van Halen), but I am sure it's out there. I think it's fun to listen around for new bands. And once you find something cool, it is such a thrill. For me recently that is Bedless Bones out of Estonia. Not your cup of tea (Synthy cold wave/EBM), I guess, but I was thrilled. -- But above all, enjoy your music!

Hello Melinda. Love this video. I agree with a lot of the content. I think compromise is an art that is perhaps overlooked in the world of collecting Vinyl, the same in any form of collecting I guess. I’m governed by lack of space and lack of finances. The space problem is why I only collect Jazz, The Blues and what I call Vintage Soul. I live in a small flat. As far as finance goes I only have my monthly pension it’s not brilliant but I try to make do. I store my Vinyl albums in record crates in my lounge, so far I have four crates and they are full lol. Another crate will be purchased. I put each album in a polypropylene cover, I can’t stand shrink wrap I find edges of the album covers do get damaged. So I remove the album from the shrink wrap, take the album from its cover, clean the actual record, replace it in to its cover and place it inside the poly cover. So far this system has worked for me. Thank you for the video. Alway look forward to these. Take care and a Happy New Year to you and your family. Regards Dave

IMHO most those questions are just silly to even consider, except for the one about "vintage equipment". First off, I don't know where or what you bought that was vintage, but you talking about vintage equipment needing repairs is normal for any piece of equipment that's over 50 years or old or more. I say this with respect, although you may have new stuff & feel comfortable with it lasting without repairs for some time, I'd bet in 50 years it will be in a junk pile somewhere unlike all these wonderful vintage pieces that are still serviceable. The other factor is the cost. Although you may have to spend some extra money having certain thing's repaired (w=if they haven't been before hand), you are still gonna come out ahead in the end. Especially with as much as you have invested already in your system, but I totally get it. New stuff is more stylish to I would guess suits you better in such a classy home. I say "Enjoy the music however you like!" Just my 2 cents.
@MelindaMurphy11 ай бұрын
You make great points. If I knew more about the mechanics of stereo equipment, I might be more inclined to buy vintage gear. For me, the new equipment sounds great and is more reliable. There is no wrong answer to this in my opinion. I do appreciate that some people are keeping vintage gear going. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.

Hello Melinda, just thought I'd mention two things, the United States of America LP is one of my favourites, and firstly there is actually no guitar on the lp, it's electric violin and can sound a bit screechy without a proper setup. Secondly an original mono promo has a different mix in " The American Way of Love" at least, and the mono mix in general will tear the paint off the walls it's so powerful. Be prepared to spend some cash if you can find one. Hope this helps some.
@MelindaMurphy11 ай бұрын
My copy is the mono mix! It's not an original which I'm sure is even better. I did make a mistake in the video. The album is new to me and I honestly thought that the electric violin was a shrill guitar. 🤗♥️ Thank you for the correction. Take care.

Great video, Melinda! I laugh at times as to how critical some of the Vinyl Community is. Here are my takes on everything: 1) Why get rid of Original Pressings?: You are SPOT ON here. There is NO reason to keep an album that has been bettered by a later copy. The original "Face Value" is in every used bin in every record store that I visit. The -2/-1 Abbey Road that you have IS the BEST sounding copy and should be in your collection for that reason only. For me as a huge Beatles fan, I tend to collect certain label variants, etc but apart from the Fabs I am starting to get rid of multiple copies I have albums. I need to make more room, so you are simply being responsible with the resources you have (in this case, space). 2) Hype Stickers: As a kid, once I started collecting I would keep the stickers but take the cellophane off. A couple of years later (by 1975) I started leaving the cellophane on so it would protect the cover. For me the hype sticker IS a part of the album artwork and also helps to identify which pressing I have. Completely agree with you on this one too! 3) RECORDS!: There is no way to avoid this. Sometimes you have to specify that a record is a vinyl record, however for the most part, I will call them "records". Calling them vinyl does not bother me. What DOES bother me is that some people call multiple copies of vinyl "vinyls"! THIS drives me crazy!!!! As an artist, when I am recording I am making a record. That is where the term originates and I will always refer to my work as records. It's a good tradition to continue :) 4) New Gear: Like records themselves, certain audio components are being made today with great care and with quality parts - sometimes even better than in the past. For that reason alone it makes complete sense to me on this one too. Both of my main turntables are less than 10 years old. They function well. Gear that is slightly older just needs more TLC. If you don't tinker, then getting new is the best thing. IF a piece of gear is vintage and sounds better in my system then that is the reason I would pick it. For me picking gear is about form, function and audio quality. Just because something is old doesn't mean it sounds better. 5) Listen to New Music? There will always be good new music but it is harder to find in the mainstream. As records keep going up in price, I will rarely buy a new album with new music on it unless I have heard it either digitally or from a friend's suggestion. I believe your listeners should start sending you examples of new music they love that excites them. I can share one (that I am sure you have and even then it is a few years old now): Devlon Lamarr Organ Trio's "Cold as Weiss" album. Hopefully other viewers will do the same. Melinda, we have a lot in common and I am sure your opinions are in the majority rather than the minority. But in the end, all that matters is that YOU collect on YOUR own terms. This pastime is supposed to bring joy into our lives and not misery. May you feel encouraged and keep collecting!! Happy New Year, my friend!

As far as hype stickers go, it's all personal preference, but what I do is leave the hype sticker and shrink on single albums, but I take the shrink off any albums that are double albums or single albums with a gatefold. There's too much info/pictures etc. inside that I want to see. But when I take the shrink off those albums, I cut off the hype sticker and file it inside the jacket so I have it in case there is info on there that I want to keep or be reminded of.
