The drilling is the German hunting gun until the 70s of the last century. Many German hunters owned only one gun. In Germany you hunt during the whole year and on your own hunting ground, often a mixture of forest, field and meadows. The average size was probably around 1000 acres, the maximum allowed by law until today is 2500 acres. Small game was abundant. A hunter could bag during an afternoon partridge, a hare, a fox and a roe deer. Boar and red deer do not occur in all areas. A double-barreled shotgun was not sufficient. It is forbidden to shoot hoofed game including the roe deer with buckshot. The drilling is versatil, it is a shotgun, a rifle and could be used with slugs on driven hunts. The drilling was the result of the available game, hunting and gun laws and the craftsmanship of German gun makers, often independent craftsmen or small-sized manufacturers.

This is a very nice video, I agree the Drilling is a German hunting gun, I think in Ferlach they build more combination guns. Friedrich von Gagern spoke in his book „Birschen und Böcke“ (Stalking and Roebucks) about his combination gun made in Ferlach. I think this is the typical Austrian hunting gun. Twelve years ago Retz & Son from Suhl build a side by side combination gun chambered in 6,5x57R 28/70 it weights only 3,2kg. Due to the small diameter of the gun barrel they made a very slim arrangment of the two barrels. This was a bespoke gift for my 50. birthday. Since then this is the my most reliable hunting tool for ducks, hares, wild boar or deer.

We can still shoot roe deer with buckshot where I am (not Germany) And a lot of guys do. I have a over/under shotgun/rifle as my only gun actually. You can also use an "insert barrel" for a smaller caliber bullet into the shotgun barrel, so you can turn into a "Bergstutzen" (2 different rifle calibers o/u). Its great to travel too. Breaks apart nicely into a short, handy and light briefcase and you can hunt pretty much anything, as you quite correctly stated. Id also consider them as a gun for bear country. Bullet for hunting purposes and a non-lethal or slug in the shotgun barrel to scare or blast bears. Reloading during a bear attack is never easy so not sure if you'd get many more shots in with a large caliber bolt gun... Personally, it's the perfect do-everything gun for me. And you can train on one platform/rifle for all your hunting needs too... I like that a lot.

I have a bad problem...I love single, double and drillings. I'm in my middle years and have loved them since I was around 8 or 10. Most people now days think I'm a kook for loving single and double rifles so much. They feel so good and are usually light and fast in the hands. Bravo on a good video.

My Great uncle George brought home a German drilling as a war trophy, double barrel 12 gauge with a 7mm Hauser. He found it in a bombed out farmhouse when the American forces fought deep into Germany. My Great uncle Lloyd had a Savage 30/30 12gauge combo gun, one for up close and one for far away he would say pointing at the barrels. Both great guns owned by great guys.

Mine is simple and an cheap 1960's Brno 7x57R x 16ga combo gun. I would esteem the small x57R rimmed based cartridges the most beautifully shaped. Wonderful for single shots and combo guns and practical too.

I’ve got a 24 gauge iver Johnson champion we shoot a lot on my channel. Also got a stevens 32 gauge. I load 1 ounce in the 24 and 3/4 ounce in the 32 because factory loads are too light for both gauges. I also load buckshot and slugs for them.

I have 2 savage combo guns I’ve had for almost 30yrs. A .222/20 gauge and a .22mag/20 gauge. Both are great guns. The latter is one of the best firearms I’ve ever hunted with here in West Virginia. Good day fellows

Yes, I have an old but perfectly good fixed 4 x , and the reticle moves. It's a Bushnell scope chief. It sits on my 222, 722 With the acceptable range for this gun, i don't need more.

I’m very fortunate to have a Johann Fanzoj combo in 12 ga over 6.5x68r. Has a Swarovski fixed 6x on claw mounts. Really just a beautiful piece and made to incredible precision.

I have 2 Baikal combo guns bought a few years ago. One is 22lr/410 and the other is 22wmr/20gauge (Sever) which is very accurate with or without a scope. Also have Chiappa Double Badger in 22lr/410 that folds up very compactly. Check the used rack in Canada for Baikals. Can still get the Chiappa new. Another interesting video Mike. Thanks for sharing

My drilling is a Sauer 3000 with Suhler claw mount and 2.5 to 10 by 52 mm Zeiss in 7x57R and 16/70. I also own two over-under (Bockbuecksflinten), one Blaser and one Bruenner Super with sidelocks. Love them all for hunting, even here in BC, Canada. By the way the Kersten lock common in over-under combinations (Bockbuchsflinten and Bockdoppelbuechsen)has two lugs, one on each side of the upper barrel and the Greener lock has only one lug on side-by-sides, between the two shotgun or rifle barrels. Also, all the good (expensive) combination guns have a double hook locking mechanism (Doppelte Laufhaken Verriegelung) on the bottom of the system. I have fond memories of the old days in our German hunting areas, using those combination guns, shooting wild boars and European hares on many drives (Treibjagden).

I have several Lyman Super Target Spot riflescopes, 12x, 15x and 24x fixed power. They are remarkably clear and bright for 70+ year old riflescopes. It's too bad our government in Canada is at war with us and our passion for firearms.

My English is not so good, but I want to tell just one thing. Everyone who wants to know if he can buy something like this but new for some normal price, my answer is yes, he can do that.. On the market now, you can buy a combination gun CZ Brno Combo (12 ga and 308 win or 30-06, what do you like more between the two). You can also buy Sabatti Forest or Sabatti Master (just a two different models and of course the same company), or FAIR (Rizzini fabric also from Italy and they had one of the best shotguns ever made for sport shooting). Now you have also Antonio Zolli gun (Italy of course). Now all this guns are something between 1500€ and 2000€. If someone needs something better, he can find that in Germany but for bigger prices.. That what really interesting is, the cheapest combination gun is from Russia, it calls Baikal IZH 94, and shoots very well for the money, it costs about 800€ brend new. I tried a few of them and they worth more then they cost, because everything on them is steel, so it can't be wrong...

I have a Drillings 9.3x62 over 12gauge 2 1/2" SxS that my grandfather sent home from Germany during WWII. I haven't ever shot it but sure would love to. I also have two old single shot 24 gauges

You have such great videos and content that is spot on. I have always wanted a combo gun, the wife and I do lots of Elk and Deer hunting and always bump into bird such as Grouse, Hungarian Partridge, but also needed to have a rifle. I went looking for a combo, i found a Charles Daly combo in 12 gauge and 30.06 on the bottom. I also found a Merkle combo 16 gauge with 9.3 x72 R . I really wanted the merkle but i load ammo for everything I own so i did not want to go with the 9.3 and 16 ga. So i own a charles Daley the gun was mad in Italy by a the company Sabatti, supposed to be a great company. It has engravings of Red Stag on boths sides of the reciever and and mountains in the back ground. I live in Washington State and I found this in South Dakota in a old shop that i used to buy from in the 1980'S. The guy selling the gun , his name is bill and so is mine. You have such a great channel.

The drillings I've seen have been wonderful firearms. Most seem to have been brought back from Germany by returning soldiers after WWII. It sucks to lose.

Hi Dan - I thought most of them would be full choke but the ones I own are mostly modified and if they have 2 shotgun barrels - modified and improved cylinder - or even cylinder.

Of course I do not know about your particular Drilling, but the little connecting rods that raise and lower the rear sight can break (on some models at least) if these old guns are repeatedly opened and closed while in "rifle mode".

Late reply, but; This drilling seems to have two flip up sights. Probably one for 100m, and the other for further distance. With two sights to flip up, it makes no sense to do it automaticly. (Or you must have a way to pre set wich sight to use.)

drillings are some of the most unique and reliable guns. i have one - Suhl '84 model, 12/12 over 7x57R. i use it for hunting, mostly small game, in the central europe.

Hello Sir, It’s such a pleasure to see see your show regularly. It brings a lot of old bitter sweet memories since both of them have gone. As I have mentioned before, I have had the pleasure to shoot real old combination firearms. We had a double rifle, the top barrel was a .300 Sherwood while the bottom barrel was a .410 shotgun. It was a Gun that my father had bought it for my mother. I also knew a gentleman who had a special British made12/20 bore. Very heavily choked. This was all in India where my father was stationed. I spent a lot of years there and hunted my fill.

Fiocchi and federal both offer 24 gauge and 32 gauge as regular production ammo. You pretty much have to buy it online though. But yes magtech is still making brass cases for the 24 as well as every other gauge but 10, and they’re not too expensive!

Every now and then you can pick one up used for a decent price, mostly from estate sales. There's companies that facilitate purchases and exports to the US but I can't recall it on top of my head. But that's very possible actually. There's always one or two local-language forums or popular hunting website in each country (you have to look in Europe, esp Germany) where you find tons of offers.

Lovely combination gun. The scope is small, as roe deer and capercaillie would usually be shot at a distance less than 100 metres (preferrably less than 75 metres). Bear in mind that back in the old days, roe deer was shot with a shotgun (shot size #2, to be precise). Roe deer is also considered small game, unlike the capercaillie, which is considered big game, and therefore warrants the use of a bullet. The claw mounts are indeed lovely, and a second/third hand gun with such mounts but missing a scope or rings is effectively worthless. I was eyeing a very short Mauser carbine (a tracker rifle) with such mounts at my favourite gunstore, and the owner told me that the gun cost 200 euros, but making scope rings would add 1200 euros, as these are all handmade (back when she was an apprentice gunsmith, her first year consisted of making and fitting these). But even with scope, old drillings and combination guns remain cheap. I've rarely seen one over 2000 euros (at said gunstore, they had a nearly new Blaser with a nice Meopta, 16ga and 6.5x57R for 1600 euros) unless it was owned by the last Emperor of Austria or the Duke of Bavaria or something. At most German gunstores, they somewhat sit in a corner with the other discounts. Something to do with the fact that the generation that could afford only one gun in their lives, is making way for the Blaser-generation. The other reason is that if a part breaks down, you're effectively screwed as skilled gunsmiths (these guns are like a Swiss watch on the inside) are very, very expensive nowadays.

Informative note - thank you! I'd buy them all 😂. I've owned so many; don't remember a breakage problem - some were missing scopes so I mounted scopes another way - if a scope was really needed. I found claw mounts fairly easy to work with and fit to another scope - maybe I'm lucky. The scopes were sometimes foggy or seemed to have dust inside - not a functional thing though. Anyway - the drillings and combination guns are in a different level of gunmaking achievement - well worth buying and using IMHO All the best to you.

I shot my first deer in Austria with his Franz Sodia 16 bore over a 7X65R. It was a great rifle. Much like in this video. The advantage is that you are equipped for anything. I did see one with a .22 Hornet barrel as well. The disadvantage is that you fire the shotgun barrel at a bird and deer head for the hills.

Yes - TPH - If I remember correctly he lost his wife to blood loss delivering their son and brokenhearted he found solace deep in the forest and hunted as a way of life and one day was visited by God as he pursued a great stag. There is much more to the story that I can't remember well. There is something about hunting and the forest; hard to put into words. Thanks for the note.

Fun fact: the liquor Jagermiester gets its logo from the stag and crucifix that is the simple of saint Hubertus

But that asides, he is indeed the patron saint of hunters, and on his nameday (3rd of novembre), across Europe, Hunters masses (or St. Hubertus mass, check youtube on "Hubertus Messe") are dedicated. This is also one of the few times (asides from a hunter's funeral) that one may wear a hat in Church, and sometimes even a gun. This is also a mass where they bless dogs, guns, birds of prey and horses (the horses will remain outside, though). In my area they also hand out "hubkes", small buns of sweet bread which are blessed and are supposed to ward off the evil eye, rabies, ticks and stray pellets.

Also, the white stag was considered the messenger of the Gods in heathen days. Killing one would spell grave misfortune (20th century German authors keep it at "you'll be dead within a year"). I've heard that native Americans, Siberians and Japanese hold the white deer in similar regard.

German here, Brittas boyfriend. A few months ago, there was in german arms magazine ,Deutsches Waffenjournal' there was an article, why this Combination guns ( Büchsflinte/ Drilling/ Vierling) came out of use by German language Hunters since the 1970s. Today those guns, formerly expensive, are today relaive cheap to buy, because modern Hunters No more want it. In this article a German gunmaker/ gunsmith was noted, have forgotten His Name. He buys such used Combination guns, repairs them If necessary to Safe condition and sells them to affordable prices in USA, until now nearly 1000 guns. As i wrote,i have forgotten his Name, but it was noted that in USA there is a collectors society for German guns, for example , Schützenrifles'. The members of this collectors society seem to know this German gunmaker/ gunsmith.

You have an excellent collection of combination guns and drillings! I was curious if combination guns went by other designations, such as "zweiling" or something similar (zwei is two in German)? And what are your thoughts on vierlings (vier is four in German and fünflings, are they overly more complex or less reliable than the more common combination guns or drillings (fünf is five in German)?

Just bought an over under sauer model 54 in 6.5x57R for $1200 to get to US in a German auction. If I was in Germany where auction was would be a 500-600 euro gun

I had a brace of American Arms over/unders in 24ga and 32ga. Let somebody talk me out of them. Love the rifle I got in trade, but have regretted the trade ever since... BTW, Federal now loads 24 and 32 ga. You might want to try a box to see if the rims are better suited to your gun.

Hi! I got a 4X on my 22lr and a 1.5/6 on my 222 Remington , many shooters count on their optics to do the trick for them.... But it's not the way it works. I shoot as good with optics than with irons... 🖖🏻🇫🇷😎🇫🇷😎🇫🇷🖖🏻

With ridiculous optics they can't do it! 🖖🏻🇫🇷😎🇫🇷😎🇫🇷🖖🏻 I've grouped 10 shots in a 35/35 cms square at 1265m. 1383 Yards with a 4/16x Nikon optic... The target was 80/80 cms wide. The gun was my 243 Browning X-Bolt with a gorgeous Laminated GRS stock. Shooting 100 grains factory S&Bellot ammo.

Your drilling may still have a set trigger; my Sauer and Sohn drilling can only set the trigger when I flip the switch to rifle mode. In shotgun mode, it doesn't set.

Yours is easier to find ammo for though. Mine is 12-gauge (2 1/2" chambers, so I special order ammo with paper shells just so I don't accidentally mix it up with 2 3/4" ammo with plastic shells), with an 8x58r Sauer rifle barrel.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I'm also unsure of the utility of the set trigger, at least in the case of my drilling. The normal trigger pull is exquisite, it's short, light, crisp, and breaks cleanly. One of the best triggers on any rifle I own, if not the best. The set trigger, on the other hand, is ONLY useful when firing from a rest and is so sensitive that by the time your finger feels the trigger, the gun has already fired. This perhaps has some utility when firing from a seated bench rest or similar position in a deer blind, but is absolutely useless when fired offhand.

The Drillings looks like it have a set trigger on the second trigger. The one with the screw is the set one. Or it is german set trigger which is unheard of in Drilling. If the Drillings lift the sights, then it lower them es well. If not it is bad spring, dirt or old grease.

I don't know if you care much for revolvers and handguns although I'm going to ask if you are what is your knowledge of the Webley revolvers. I'm not very informed outside of bare bones google searches about them but I'd love to hear you just give your general thoughts on them. I inherited one from my great grandfather through the recent passing of my aunt a very beautiful example carried by the great grandfather in question in India during his time in the British military.

Hubertus in this case might be Schmidt&Bender optics, but do not buy any Hubertus branded scope, at least if you expect quality. There is a German company that brands various hunting accessories “Hubertus”. There amongst scopes with lenses that origins from anything from Zeiss to plastic China junk. Hubertus is the “Saint of hunting” and the name has been used for just about anything related to hunting through the years. It is difficult to predict the general quality of a Hubertus scopes.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns If you have the money, you can buy a new Blaser in rimless cartdridges. In my opinion a break action should be in a rimed caliber like 7x57R, 7x65R or 8x57RS and so on, most european and some american companies make these. If you get a traditionel combined gun with soldered barrels, you can anyway only make cold bore shots, otherwise the point of impact will climb a lot, so shooting a lot of ammo on the range isn't a thing with combined guns.

They are discontinued while back,and missed by a few . But Rws load it with 3 different bullets so its also with them. The straight grip drilling reminds me of bird hunter priority 1 ,then roe sized game etc as second.

2.7 kg or about 6 pounds - they can be heavier with more barrels of course - but the actions are relatively small no matter what - so they have a weight advantage over other guns - except SXS and O/U shotguns.

The government can try take the sks from us but the ones we own will never be sold , taken\ given away. 762*39 dropped a deer at 200 yards in 1 shot with iron sights. Sks will stand strong forever in our native hunting lands. One of the best semi autos and cheapest to get bullets and they kill moose the same as a elk or deer , so good it can kill gophers too. Sks is a very good rifle I love.

I got a bit of a mystery drilling, has "W. Weissgerber St. Wendel" stamped on it. It has two 16 gauge barrels though shorter than standard 16 gauge and the rifle barrel from what I gathered is 8x57r/360 which I can't find anywhere.
