Another easy way I like to remember is using the first letter of each word to remember the focus of each. B for Bottom-up, BODY functions and BIOMECHANICAL approach to approach the goal, (or BUILDING blocks of what the task is made up of), T for top-down using the TASK to approach the goal. (:

Great video! I like that it is 4 minutes and not 2 minutes because you give more information that will be memorable. 2 minute videos feel more like a flashcard that I'd have to watch a few times, whereas 4 minutes gets closer to a memorable lesson. Thanks!

Thank you for this video, it was really helpful! For some reason I always think about top-down and bottom up using the example of a child learning how to tie their shoes. Top down = You get better at tying your shoes by tying your shoes (continuing to practice, using different strategies, etc.) - the occupation is the means and the end goal. Bottom up = You get better at tying your shoes by increasing hand strength, finger dexterity, etc. but not in the context of tying the shoes. Biomechanical interventions are used as the means to achieve the occupational end goal. Research shows that top down and occupation-based is more effective!

I literally never make online comments but I just had to say this video was fantastic Miri, really solidified my understanding of the concept and as you say - coming at it from the angle of how it impacts your reasoning and selecting interventions etc was a much better approach than any other way it has been taught/explained to me. - your newest fan from NZ

aww my new friend from NZ! Thank you for taking a moment to connect with me and leave me your kind words and feedback! It's 1:25AM here in California and I was just going through some of my videos, reflecting on the wonderful journey this channel has taken me through over the course of these last 2 years. And I can say without a doubt that the best part of this journey has been forging meaningful connections with people like you! I've never been a big fan of social media nor would I have ever imagined that I'd ever make public videos like this, but when I receive messages like yours, I'm reminded that my passion, love and efforts toward this community are not in vain. So thank you for sharing your journey with me!

Miri, would you always choose an assessment that is top-down if the client's setting is not medical? (I.e. School, home health, community, mental health, etc)? Assuming the answer choices not cancelled out are all appropriate of course.
@MiriLee7 жыл бұрын
Hi Joshua, bottom-up standardized assessments are frequently administered in school settings to determine eligibility for school-based services. But even when utilizing a bottom-up assessment, it is possible to incorporate a top-down approach by maintaining emphasis on the client's participation in specific meaningful activities identified as goals by the client, rather than merely on the client factors themselves.
