It is uncomfortable and unnatural to pedal the moped style so I do not I just treat it like a low speed motorcycle. So yes not on calorie deficit. They have gotten more affordable. E.g.: You can get a DYU A1F for just 500 bucks (minus shipping, etc.), and DYU has cheaper ones than that on their site! They're mostly small bikes but have a great build, great quality, they're NOT speed demons (15mph top speed) but they're some of the best, lowest priced entry-level ebikes online ANYWHERE.

I would agree that you don't get exercise on an e-bike if you don't pedal and just use the throttle. Any pedaling you do is physical work, otherwise known as exercise. I got an ebike too and I will go on fitness rides with it by dropping my pedal assist and not using my throttle at all. I have gone over 50km with that method on a 14 amp hour 48v battery. With just throttle I get closer to 30km of range.

Yeah people be worried about whether someone else is getting exercise on their ebike while they order donut and fast food delivery from less than a mile away. To anyone thinking about an ebike to get out and have fun and maybe get some exercise just go for it. A lot of people have regular bikes sitting collecting dust but ebikes are so fun you'll be making excuses to go places further away and more often. And even if you use the throttle often you're still going to end up pedalling and using your muscles more than when you're sitting on the couch or in front of the computer. Try telling motocross riders or downhill mountain bikers that they "get no exercise" because they have a motor or use a chairlift to go up hills.

some may disagree with me but these don't feel like myths, more like opinions and from ones experience. E-bikes are expensive, to get a good ebike you'd have to spend a decent amount of money, especially if you want one with decent parts. in the UK you have to spend around 400+ for a bike with decent (entry level) parts but i'd say 1k + for a decent ebike. they are substantially more expensive. a £500 ebike is a BSO with a motor on it, usable but i wouldn't say amazing by any means (i know because i got one from amazon), sure they may have good reviews but these are from people that don't care and just want a quick ride, bare in mind you have to do all your own maintenance cuz most likely no shop will work on it or supply parts for it. maintenance is slightly more irritating, on sub 1k ebikes mainly because of the cheaper parts, nuts used instead of QR or skewers, hub motors, etc, I wouldn't say harder but it'll take longer just to do anything. hub motors take extra time to do any maintenance with. for e.g. if you get a flat, unless you're fixing it with the wheel on the bike, you have to unplug the cables before you can release the bolt, then release the wheel. depending on the parts and the bike, this can get pretty annoying pretty quick. so for people who want an ebike with less maintenance and issues, you do have to spend substantially more money, plus if you don't have any experience in maintenance, then you have no options to getting cheap imports from china. I wouldn't tell people to just go buy a cheap ebike, do your research and find out what you want. don't just go buy a ebike cuz its cheap from amazon, it'll end up being a single gear, and have in other terms, shit components that you'll want to throw away after it's started to feel like you need to do any maintenance on it. buy cheap, buy twice.

Battery... Yeah, they suck. Though there are exceptions, they tend to max out at around 750 watt hours. If you ride fast or have hills in your area, without working up a sweat, you're looking at 20 miles range. Most aren't 750 watt hours, they are much less. 36V 12ah is typical as is 48v 8ah or 10ah is pretty common. With a very gentle pedal assist 1, you can get a lot of range. But nobody buys an ebike to go 10mph in pedal assist 1.

(battery): Have been researching (understatement) did some in person looking last week and tomorrow I test drive an e-bike. Higher $ amount here in Canada but proportional. I'm a life long cyclist (not a racer but mainly commuter). In my well past mid-life years I have some issues, knee, back, that have proved detrimental to cycling experience. Last year I hardly rode at all and that is with a bike frame with a good-for-me upright geometry. The myths abound and I admit I used to hold some of them. Videos with practical, literally road-tested advice, like yours, have been a big help to me. What I will need to work on going forward, aside from learning my ride is how to scale down my anticipated frustration with, as @MontanaEbiker referred to as "the spandex crew and Karens). Being informed of local law/regulations and knowing the actual truth then being able to convey that without reciprocal aggression is a recipe to learn by heart 🙂 I've even considered getting 'business' card size cards made up with the local rules and myth corrections so I can just say, Hey, thanks for sharing your P.O.V. Here's a card.

🔹"Cheating?" Cheating who? It doesn't matter whether or not I'm getting (someone else's idea of) exercise. I don't want to train for a marathon bicycle race. Aside from the fact that an e-bike is fun, mine serves a practical function for my living situation. I live on a boat and travel around. An e-bike with a cargo trailer is more practical than a car or truck because I can take the bike with me when I travel. I don't get into the exercise argument because frankly, my level of exercise is no ones business but mine and my doctor's (if I had one). 🔹An e-bike *doesn't* go over 25 to 30 mph. In most states if it exceeds that speed it legally becomes a "motorized vehicle" subject to licenses, registration, and insurance requirements for motor vehicles in that state. People too lazy to research their state laws and push their bikes up to 40 and 50 mph have turned their bicycles into electric motorcycles subject to all the state's laws concerning motorcycles and some hefty fines if they don't follow those laws. 🔹In the state of Louisiana (for one example), e-bike or bicycle, it is unlawful NOT to have at least one hand on the handle bars at all times while moving. You can be ticketed if a Cop sees you do it. 9:52 🔹The federal government is about to pass some restrictive laws concerning e-bikes and one of the main reasons for it is that (some) e-bike riders tend to break traffic laws ... because ...??? 8:18 and 11:58 People giving e-bike advice on YT need to make sure they are operating in accordance with the laws of their state, at least while recording. You may find your videos being used in congressional hearings to justify their proposed federal restrictions on e-bikes.

@@BigAndTallBiking Regular bikes can hit 28mph going down a long or steep hill. So I'm pretty comfortable with the top speed being 28. Of course, the problem is that the energy required to move a bike goes up an accelerating curve. Maintaining 28mph requires a great deal of energy and will quickly drain the battery. While maintaining 10mph may only take around 100 watts, maintaining 30mph is probably around 800 watts. At low speeds, the primary resistance is rolling resistance and the resistance in the bearings of the wheels. But as you go up in speed, the wind resistance rapidly rises.

@@prophetzarquon1922 The thing with bicycles is when you are going slow the resistance is negligible and the power requirements are quite low. Going 10mph on a bike is quite easy. You can just turn off the motor and pedal lmao then it's a freaking weighted 80lb tank, hows that for exercise? I ride my bike to the gym everyday and after leg day I just turn up the pedal assist and drop a gear because my legs are sore and thats not really an ideal time to be doing even more work with your legs.

Things I disagree with you about e-bikes: Speed Limits: I do not encourage anyone to get an e-bike that exceeds the state legal limit. In the USA, most e-bikes are legally limited to 28 mph (Class 3 - no throttle). However, in many other parts of the world, the limit is 15-mph. I would recommend Class 1 e-bikes (20 mph limit) for deliveries in many metropolitan areas in the USA. The reason for this is that many complaints are leading legislators to consider stricter e-bike speed limit regulations, which would negatively impact everyone. Additionally, a 35-mph accident on an e-bike is far more dangerous and potentially fatal compared to a car accident at the same speed. Theft: While it is true that homeless people do steal food, most of the thefts I have witnessed while delivering to apartments in Boston were actually committed by neighbors living in the same building. Exercise: You cannot accurately measure your cycling workout on a smartwatch because they are calibrated for manual bikes, not e-bikes. Additionally, the mode you use on the e-bike significantly affects how many calories you burn. Most e-bike delivery people I see use the throttle frequently and rarely pedal. I also noticed that you used the throttle a few times. When I was doing deliveries, I used a regular bike. Since I only worked about three hours per day, the exercise was really beneficial, and I managed to lose about 80 pounds in nine months.

And the smartwatch used heart rate to calculate the calories burned not distance or how much you pedal
@HullioGQ
@HullioGQ 17 күн бұрын
@@BigAndTallBiking While it’s true that smartwatches use heart rate to calculate calories burned, this method isn't always accurate for e-bike workouts. Here's why: 1. Heart Rate Variability: Heart rate readings can vary based on many factors, not just physical exertion. When using an e-bike, your heart rate might not accurately reflect the level of effort you're putting in, especially if you're relying on the throttle instead of pedaling. This can lead to overestimations of the calories burned. 2. Mode of Use: The mode you use on the e-bike greatly affects your workout intensity. If you’re using a high level of pedal assistance or the throttle, your heart rate might not increase as much as it would if you were pedaling manually. This means the smartwatch might not capture the lower physical effort accurately. 3. Inconsistent Effort: With e-bikes, the effort required can change rapidly, especially with the use of the throttle or different assistance levels. This can make heart rate-based calorie calculations less reliable compared to a consistent manual bike workout. 4. Comparison with Manual Bikes: When I used a regular bike for deliveries, I consistently pedaled, which provided a more accurate measure of my workout intensity. This consistency helped me lose about 80 pounds in nine months, something that might be harder to achieve with an e-bike if the throttle is used frequently. While smartwatches use heart rate to estimate calories burned, the variable effort and assistance levels on an e-bike can make these readings less reliable. For more accurate tracking and better fitness benefits, manual biking or consciously pedaling without relying on the throttle would be more effective.

I’m with you on most things but your calorie burn count is way off. Average pedal biker with continuous cadence averages 400 calories an hour. I love e-bikes. I’ve lost 30 pounds…. But an hour on an ebike is not equivalent to an hour on a traditional bicycle. Yes they are exercise, but calories burned is directly related to energy output and I don’t use as much personal energy with a pedal assist…. Which is what makes it fun.

@@BigAndTallBiking I'm still skeptical, but that definitely means the data is more valid. _"The Apple Watch calculates both of these metrics by correlating readings taken in the background with accelerometer data"_ The heart rate monitor and the accelerometer data are used together to calculate calorie expenditure, and depend on an algorithm which is based on muscles causing all the motion. The app should have an option for ebikes.

batter-e...You are calculating your calories burned on your watch? See how many calories are burned if you use throttle only. What I'm concerned with is that the watch is considering distance and speed to calculate your calories burned. Not really your true energy expenditure. Let me know how many calories are burned with throttle only on your food delivery runs! Keep up the great content.
