+Brandon Guimond Yeah his standalones don't get nearly as much attention as his series do. I'm hoping to reread Elantris within the next month or two! I plan to start doing reviews of them as I make my way through them for a second time hopefully catching more of the Cosmere references

I'm a reader but have not read any fantasy yet. I've been trying to figure out a good place to start. From all the author's I've heard mentioned in a lot of KZbin videos, Brandon Sanderson seems to be one of the highest praised. I honestly don't think I've ever heard anyone talk negatively about him. I've heard that his new series The Stormlight Archive is the best work he's ever done. A lot of people even saying it's better than George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, which is some very high praise. However, those books are gigantic and pretty much everybody says the Mistborn series is a better place to start. So I decided to buy the first Mistborn trillogy a few days ago and I'm liking it more and more the farther I get into it. I'm really liking Vin, Kelsier and Dockson's characters. The world it takes place in is very interesting as well. If you have any other suggestions for someone who is brand new to fantasy, and really wants to experience the very best the genre has to offer, I'm all ears. Really like your channel by the way. I just discovered it and am going to go through your videos here shortly. I'm sure I'll find the answer to this question out after watching your videos but I was wondering if there is one fantasy book or series you hold above all others as your absolute favorite. Let me know. Thanks and happy reading. P.S. I was wondering if you're read Six of Crows. I understand that it's considered YA but a lot of people say those books are exceptional page turners. I'm not huge into YA books in general but have read a couple I've really liked. I've also never read any of the Harry Potter books which always seemed to me like they'd be very childish and lack the maturity I look for in books. Friends of mine say I'm wrong and that they are far more mature than I would think. I'd love to get your take on that as well. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

separator94 Woah, first off: I’m so happy you’re enjoying your plunge into fantasy with the Mistborn series!! I really love Dockson too! His stormlight series is superb but is obviously a big commitment as you’ve noted. Warbreaker is another fantastic novel by him. If you’ve ever watched the Lord of the Rings or just have some basic knowledge on the stereotypical dwarves, elves, and wizards, I think Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan is a great entry point. You can really get behind the characters, and you get invested in them quickly. They get better and better as the series goes along. Gwen is a human who is literally one of my favorite female characters of all time. As for Six of Crows, it starts off extremely slowly. I honestly think it’s harder to really get into it if you haven’t already read the original Grisha Trilogy. You can read the Six of Crows duololy without it, but the second book has some major overlap which spoils the trilogy if you haven’t read it. That being said, the Six of Crows duology is waaaay more my speed than the original trilogy, and Nina is my favorite character from that series. There is a lot of emotional depth and heartbreak that happens in that duology. For Harry Potter: I will say this, the first few books are KIDS books. Every adult that I’ve known that goes into them thinking they’re masterpieces is immensely disappointed. They are not perfect, and they are originally children’s books. BUT the world is deep, and you really get to see that as the series goes along. The last three or four books especially are absolutely deep and are advantaged by an adult mind reading them. (Ignore the Fantastic Beasts movies as connections. I pretend they just have similar characters but are set in separate world like comics because there are a ton of inconsistencies.)

@lilymcallister9751

I agree. Theft of Swords is a great way to jump in to fantasy. It has great characters, action and super easy to follow the world building. It has adult themes regarding political issues, racial issues and morality but they take a backseat to the amazing plot and action centered around Royce and Hadrian. Also, it's hilarious at times, as well as dark. Sometimes together. I've read over 2000 books, 50% fantasy and it's my favorite to recommend to new ( and jaded as well) fantasy fans. I hope you like it.

@@lilymcallister9751 Thanks for the info. Really appreciate it. I'm already a couple hundred pages into the first Mistborn book, and seriously enjoying it, but will definitely be reading Theft of Swords as well. Just added it to my list. Please check out "The Time Manipulator;s Son". Below is the synopsis: "Powerful aliens hide on an asteroid floating above the planet Chyspah. Fearing for her child's life, a widow breaks the laws of her people and makes contact with the leader of the planet. Her actions kick off a long series of strange occurrences and unexpected discoveries that lead three boys to solve their parents' mysteries as they're caught in the midst of the royal family's fall from power. Daniel experiences bizarre episodes of time travel, while Anomar learns he was adopted-and that his real parents belong to a species of aliens with supernatural powers. With the reluctant help of their timid friend Benardo, the boys dig deeper to find the truths hidden in their own lives. What they learn will change everything they thought they knew about themselves-and each other."

I just started reading The Riyria Revelations and Im loving it so far! The relationship between Royce and Hadrian is very inticing and I cant wait learn more about them. My favorite thing about the series so far is how easy-going of a read it is, the author has created a vivid and complete fantasy world with government, religion, and economy but it isn't hounding you with details. Other books ive read like ASOIAF and The Witcher series tend to drag on and on with convoluted political and econmical conflicts, and while it adds a certain amount of realism can get pretty tiresome to read about. I like how Sullivan has played around those themes but doesnt drone on about them and he does so without sacrificing the maturity of the novel. Sorry to bore you with my thoughts, just wanted to share! Cant wait to read more from Sullivan and check out some other books mentioned in your video!

Sadiyah Ali Hi! So Mistborn is planned to be a larger series made up of smaller series. The original trilogy is The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages. Then set on the same planet/world is the Wax and Wayne series which hasn’t been completed yet. It is set chronologically a long time after the first trilogy ended. If I’m not mistaken, Sanderson has two or three more series planned to be set on Scadrial (the name of the world that Mistborn takes place on).

+J. A. Well I'm glad you're getting back into reading and doing better. Hmm I don't read a ton of older fantasy, but if you're okay with newer fantasy, I've got you. Song of the Shattered Sands is a great series. The first one is Twelve Kings in Sharakhai. I have a review of it on my channel. It's a very good series for beginners because it allows you to wade into the world without just dropping you in.

In my opinion you may find it hard to get a book as good as LOTR. Books I would consider to be top notch in fantasy would be Game of Thrones (ASOIAF) which is a dark medieval sort of world where human drama is at the forefront with a mystery type magic in the background which you are not given an explanation of. Also his dark materials trilogy by Philip Pullman which can be described as a coming of age in a dark fantasy world and is very well written and explores manything from religion to many worlds theories. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is an amazing well written historical fantasy Novel with mature characters and settings.

@ConnorOBrien
@ConnorOBrien 6 жыл бұрын
Hah they were formative for me. I read them as they came out and when I was first getting back into reading. I honestly don’t know how I would feel about them if I reread them or read them for the first time now, but I liked them a lot when I was a teenager. Oh jeez City of Bones came out when I was 15! I liked the Infernal Devices better than the Mortal Instruments, and I enjoyed the original trilogy more than the additional three books. I thought the Shadowhunter’s Codex was a waste of money. I haven’t actually read anything past that. I’ve been meaning to pick up the Tales of the Shadowhunter Academy to see if I’d still enjoy her stories and writing, but I’ve been picking up other things instead.
@Cactusmushrooms
@Cactusmushrooms 6 жыл бұрын
@@ConnorOBrien I've finish 'the infernal devices' and I absolutely love the shadow world. But I have doubt picking up 'the mortal instruments' and still haven't pick it up, part because many people are let down and I hear 'infernal devices'are much much better. So, I'm really afraid it'll destroy my love for that trilogy. But since you enjoy the original more, I guess I'll pick it up. Thank you:)
@ConnorOBrien
@ConnorOBrien 6 жыл бұрын
Mawimawii Renthlei oh no, I said the infernal devices were better. The first three books of the mortal instruments (a six book series) are better than the latter three. I still think the Infernal Devices outshone the Mortal Instruments though.

My recommendation for coming of age, dystopian fantasy is "Vivian Amberville - The Weaver of Odds" by Louise Blackwick. It's a new and little known author, but the book has a fanbase of 2-3 million readers.Vivian Amberville is basically a masterpiece of the fantasy genre, in right league with George Martin, J.K.Rowling and Patrick Rothfuss. Vivian Amberville follows the story of a teenage girl who can manipulate the outcome of events. She can travel between dimensions and ultimately discovers she can reshape reality. The story mainly takes place in two worlds: one is a futuristic failed Great Britain, the other a fantasy realm where thoughts can be shaped into things. The masterpiece of this work is the multi-layered world the author created, the lifelike characters and the hidden messages in the story. A recommended read for fantasy and sci fi fans!

ugh I REALLY want to like Robin Hobb but I just can't. I HATE her. I read the first Farseer trilogy and her Soldier Son trilogy. NEVARE IS ABSOLUTE TRASH! I've never hated a character so much. I find her books quite long but it seems like absolutely nothing happens. You know when there's a book in a series that doesn't advance the plot at all. Like all the characters just go round and round in the same space. I feel like ALL the Farseer books were like that. And the plot of Soldier Son does actually move along but it feels like it doesn't. It's almost episodic like 90% of the book doesn't advance the plot and then 10% does, often at the end.

I loved all of the farseer books but I hated the soldier son trilogy it was like a massive prank honestly I kept thinking that Navare was on the cusp of becoming a great/strong character but he literally never does he's weak the whole series. The third book was God awful because it was from Navares perspective like usual but he is "trapped" inside his own body that is being controlled by someone else almost the ENTIRE novel. Wtf how can you make a character that is basically useless who has no effect on most of the story! God damn.

Hmm for thrillers and mysteries, I'm not the best person to ask. Joce from the channel scribblesreads and Katie from ChapterStackss both read a fair amount of those. For fantasy, I'm surprised you made it through a lot of A Song of Ice and Fire. I found those books very dense and boring for hundreds of pages. Hobb's books can be slow as well, but I think the Liveship Traders is the best Hobb I've read and enjoyed them a lot. For quick-paced fantasy, if you haven't checked out Michael J. Sullivan, his books are very fast reads. Bradley P. Beaulieu's Twelve Kings in Sharakhai is a faster-paced epic fantasy. I read a self-published novel called Paternus that was a quick, interesting fantasy book as well. I think it'll take more than one fantasy series to know what you'll like in the fantasy genre. It'll take some trial and error to find out what you like the most.
