About the Black Plague, I just wanted to clear something up for more information. The Black Plague didn't die out because it had no one to infect. Rather than that, everyone with weaker immune systems, or immune systems that couldn't beat it, died. Therefore, everyone with stronger immune systems survived, and reproduced, passing on their stronger immune system to their children, and they would pass it on to their children. The disease didn't get weaker, we just got stronger. Unfortunately, in the process 1/3 of Europe had to die for it.

@alechamblin7679

Kind of true, but not exactly. Yes, in certain circumstances where certain phenotypes are selected against, the genotypes of subsequent generations will change due to the selective force. Sure, some part of the reason the black death ended was because "the strong remained," but mostly it was due to how disease transmission works. As the number of susceptible persons falls (as numbers of infected, recovered, and dead increase), it becomes gradually more difficult for the disease to reach susceptible persons. Basically, the population becomes compartmentalized, where infected interact less and less frequently with those who are susceptible, lowering the rate of infections. Your explanation also does not account for changing attitudes and practices at the time; though it wasn't yet what we know it as, "quarantine" was becoming more and more popular just because of how clearly devastating the disease was. People would spend less time outside their homes because they feared the "bad air" they believed was causing the black plague. This also further compartmentalized populations and further dropping transmission rates. While selective forces are important in understanding the evolution of both infectious diseases and their hosts, it likely didn't play as big a role as you describe here. I'm also hesitant to subscribe to your rhetoric, as your talking point is a popular one in the eugenics camp (e.g. "people will have to die, but we will come out stronger on the other side.")

One of my cats had FIV ( Basically HIV in cats ). He died at age 10 years ago. We always gave him medicine, and special care. He also had things like frostbite ( Which he has before we found him ) he was trying to fight off. It really weakened his immune system, and he couldn’t really fight anything off. So, it also affects cats, not only humans. For cats it’s called FIV, while in humans it is called HIV. Rest In Peace buddy, I miss you.

Poor babies, it’s managed pretty well now in most cases. There’s no cure but there’s a treatment. You also unfortunately need to keep them separate from other cats because it spreads by deep bites. Never met a fiv cat who wasn’t a sweetheart though. My little man got fiP feline infectious peritonitis. Used to be 100% fatal but recently a cure was developed and he’s doing great. I’m amazed he doesn’t have any residual brain damage he is completely healthy except herpes(not a big deal just often has a kitty cold)

Rabies is deadly, but also very rare, and if the bite is known (which unfortunately wasn't the case for your grandpa) it is very much a easy to handle disease. I was bitten by a dog without rabies symptons and took 5 shots of the vaccine. If the animal had any symptom I would have to take 30 shots. The vaccine help the body to recognize and eliminate the virus before it get to the brain. The problem with rabies is that it is a silent killer, it can stay in your body for years without ever get to the brain, that depends on where the bite happened and other factors. But cases like your grandpa are the dangerous ones, because the person biten by bats usually didn't even knew of the bite to chase treatment. My condolences for your grandpa, but at least we know that rabies is treated very seriously and even the distribution of the vaccine is very controlled in order to identify and contain the possibility of the sickness spread. I'm brazilian and here most fatal cases are very much alike your grandpa, people who live in the country area or indigenous who live in forests and suffer bat bites.

I saw the original video of that. It was a group of people in a middle eastern country (I forget which one) but they had been bitten by a rabid wolf in the 1940s(?). It was a while since I saw it, so I can't remember exactly. The doctors treating them decided to record the progress of the disease (with the patients permission). But yeah, it was depressing to watch as you see the guy go from being completely fine to dead. Rabies is a scary disease.

One time I threw up a lot and was shaking and severely sick (I was 11 at the time) and she brought me into a hospital and I took a blood test and the doctor said that I had a stomach cancer. A couple days later it turns out I had the stomach flu. I think instead of me getting checked the machine or human that checked my blood should.

while the most common symptom of rabies is aggression, infected animals can also be weirdly friendly. if you come into contact with a friendly wild animal, do not run away as it might chase you. find maybe a car or house you can enter, and wait until the animal is gone.

Many years ago i had a patient who got a parasitic infection that ended up being some sort of brain worm. No one expected it so it was assumed he was having strokes or early onset dementia. It ended badly as you can imagine but the thing i remember most was that he became obsessed with bananas and even now we donk know why. He would eat them until he threw up, skin and all, and then start again as long as he could get his hands on them. He had a habit of spitting everywhere and at people's faces as time went on but we never worked out if he was like that before the infection because family told us he spat at things all the time before getting sick.

Fun fact: Georges-Jacques Danton suffered from Smallpox (Most of the scars were on his face), and he got condemmed to the guillotine in 1794. His last words were: "Don't forget to show my head to the people, its well worth it!"

My steps dads 1st wife was diagnosed with FOP. (The 2nd of the last disease). She passed with in 2 years of her diagnosis. It was unbelievable. At first the doctors had no idea what was wrong with her then one knew immediately, he sent her to a specialist in Florida.. They knew there was nothing they could do for her. My stepdad stayed at home with her and kept her comfortable till she passed. It’s a terrible, terrible disease.
