Bucket Y I actually think the opposite would happen. Nintendo, king of all gaming powered by Sony, would keep most games in the family-friendly bracket. Maybe Microsoft could jump in with nature games later, but I think part of that vision comes from the mature games on the PlayStation showing its possible. That's scary in its own right.

Surprised you haven't heard of NMS, since it got a lot of negative press around launch, and this was... a couple years ago, i think. Basically the creator promised a lot of things that would be there day 1, and they were just... not. It did get those features eventually via updates, and people liked it a lot more than how it was at launch. However, as for potential entries in a "hated at first, loved later on" countdown, I'd say Luigi's Mansion, EarthBound, and LoZ: Wind Waker, since those games weren't well received when they first came out but people liked them more as time went on. I remember hearing in the case of Luigi's Mansion, it didn't really get popular until the time the Wii came out.

Yeah, I mean, heck, Luigi's Mansion could have also gotten bigger and better press because of it's sequel Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, and the 3ds port of Luigi's Mansion are definitely reasons for it. However, I still feel that Dark Moon helped boost the original's reputation.

Here's a not-so-fun fact about the crash of '83 and Atari few people know about. A group of people that were working for Atari complained that they weren't getting paid enough, so they left and formed their own studio to make their own games. That studio is now known as "Activision," and it was their actions that caused the over-saturation to start. Even the guys that started the company said that they were indirectly responsible for the crash of '83. Say what you will about Activision, but that is actually pretty unfortunate. The guys just wanted to get paid properly, and in turn they accidentally caused other people to flood the market. Ouch.

Even still, Square was obviously ambitious with FF7 and saw the Nintendo cartridges as too restrictive with what they wanted to do with the game. Considering how big of a game FF7 turned out to be, I think they made the right choice in the end.

You can also thank Sega for creating the PlayStation, as they wanted to partner up with Sony shortly after Nintendo dumped them. The American division of Sega liked the idea, but the Japan division laughed Sony out of the room, out of doubts they can handle a full-on console. That dissonance cost them their role in the console arena.

A lot of the recent flak Earthbound has been getting comes from Undertale fans, I've noticed. I don't have anything against that game or its fanbase, but a lot of people in the Mother fanbase didn't take Undertale very kindly and pushed back a little too hard, and suddenly all of these Undertale fans that are being told that their game "sucks" compared to Earthbound are looking at this classic more critically. It's unfortunate, really.

Jayden C It certainly is for Nintendo, considering Playstation has outsold Nintendo home consoles 3 out of 4 generations. The only Nintendo home console that outsold any Playstation console was the Wii, and not as convincingly as the PS1, PS2 and PS4 outsold the N64, Gamecube and WiiU respectively. At least Nintendo destroyed Sony in handhelds

I had 3 different xbox 360s and not one had the red ring but 2 of them had disk drive problems making it not being able to open/read disks (which was 70% of my games)
