Doom has a history of making the hardest mode intentionally bullshit. The first two games sped up all the enemies, made them attack faster, and respawned them a few seconds after they died. The third game constantly drained your health down to 25 and increased the damage done by enemies, but gave you the life-regaining Soul Cube from the beginning, and now 2016 has die-once-and-it's-over mechanics.

Nightmare mode can be beaten on the old Doom games. Blood's Extra Crispy mode makes even the best FPS gamers shit their pants in terror. In some levels, there's only exactly enough ammo to kill off the monsters, and no more, making it you have to pitchfork super strong enemies (god forbid if it's the ones you can't cheese with ducking). And in the original Dos version, you can't save and come back later, otherwise, the difficulty bugs out and changes to the lowest difficulty upon loading the save game.

Alien Isolation's nightmare mode literally gave me nightmares from how stressful it was. I would see the xenomorph run into a vent, I'd try creep forwards a bit, then it would suddenly jump back down a few meters in front of me. Hiding in lockers was always a gamble because sometimes the xenomorph would just find and kill you. Goddamn, it was satisfying to finally beat though. Shoutout to Cry of Fear nightmare Mode. Even the weakest enemy can kill you in 4-5 hits, you are forced to save with this cassette tape which takes up an inventory spot in a game where you only have a maximum of 6 inventory slots at best, which is halved to 3 near the end of the game, while also needing to carry all of your weapons, healing items, and items for puzzles in this 6 space inventory. Even past that, you can only save a maximum of five times throughout the entire game. Where the average playthrough sees somewhere between 50 and 100 saves if you're like me. And if you're getting that sweet sweet S-rank? You can only save four of those times, and only use *two* healing items. For the ENTIRE GAME.

Ever since it came out, I don't think they actually made a lot of updates to the hard part of Death Wish itself, only the Peace and Tranquility option. It feels like the only ones who playtested the mode were the devs themselves (who probably have platforming and reflexes of speedrunners, which this mode demands). This turns a rather fun and cute platformer into an incredibly bullshit mode that made one of the best characters into one of the most hateful to many (Snatcher's still a good character, though). Thankfully it can be cheesed through workshop add-ons, despite the rather funny penalty for trying to enable cheats via the console. It's also very pointless, since most of the rewards are already available for free on the workshop. If you're planning on buying the DLC, just get the rewards off the workshop. Saves you the hassle and some of the packs these rewards are in also include a bit more. Hopefully the next DLC is a bit more relaxing and forgiving.

This video is the number one reason why, when I get to making my own games, I’m going to make sure it’s as fine tuned as I can get. The best way to ensure something like this is to get feedback from those who play test the game and also the community. Say someone isn’t a fan of how underwater combat is handled. I can just make minor adjustments so it isn’t as drastic of a difference. Or maybe it’s too hard or easy? I can adjust the stats if needed. And because I plan to add multiplayer to the game, I need to fine tune all of that too. It’s a huge project, but I’m pouring my blood, sweat, and tears into it. But considering I’ve put my heart into over a years worth of work, I’ve committed to it. And I’m not going to be the guy I used to be who comes up with ideas for a mod in Minecraft and never follows through. And once it does become a reality, I hope it’ll be worth it. I’m excited, a little nervous, and in desperate need of a shutting up right now…

Beat Alien Isolation without dying. Once you do the game is so second nature it’s never difficult again. The stress alone from that run is easily one the most nerve racking experiences in horror games.

It's pretty bad game design when you NEED LUCK to actually beat any sort of hard mode. Lunatic+ is just lazy ass design.

Awakening difficulty settings in a nutshell: Easy: As simple as getting Tharja to spread her legs for Robin Normal: The enemies are like Green Units! Hard: Donnel might die iff'n ya ain't careful wif him now, ya hear? Lunatic: "Now that's strategy!" Lunatic+: *"PICK A GOD AND PRAY!"*

I beat Nier Automata on very hard, and I can say without any doubt whatsoever that the most difficult parts can be the flying sections, which makes the prologue one of the hardest parts of the entire game (on very hard). But you’re completely right. It is Entirely unenjoyable. And you wind up spending at least 90% of most engagements spamming the evade button. And what’s worse is that there are several times throughout the game where if you die, you will get an ending. And that’s also super frustrating. Because at best you can only go back to your last save point. Meaning you are also constantly saving.

Having BS a difficulty mode seems to be a thing for good Doom games. The classic Doom's Nightmare Mode had all the mode had all the monsters respawn.

On the subject of Lunatic+, I recently found myself playing Binding Blade on Hard Mode, and I'm starting to think Binding Blade HM might be one of my new favorites. Like, the sudden increase in dificulty will smack you around the face pretty hard if you're not expecting it, but it never feels unfair. You just have to think more strategically and not be too stingy with EXP (tip: Marcus comes in very handy for the earlygame).

Lunatic+ is downright insulting too considering the only way to subvert getting the perfect stat increases you need is to use the PAID exp grinding maps

Dragon Age Inquisition had a very fun difficulty you can call Nightmare Trials! Here, you simply play the game on Nightmare, which is already brutal as all hell, where every encounter, which there are hundreds of in the game, can take hours to beat! If that isn't hard or timeconsuming enough, try doing it with every trial turned on as well! This does things like always scale enemies to at least be your level, give enemies tons of random buffs and abilities, remove the ability to restock potions outside of your home base. make your potions only heal one segment of health and gain exp much slower than before...

I’ve beaten lunatic+ on Awakening, but ONLY thanks to the grinding DLC. You can’t even do regular encounters to grind as the enemies are already as strong as end game opponents. To anyone who has beaten that monster of a mode, you have my respect. Even more so if no DLC was used.

You know what, there's one I wish you'd said. Darkwood. The normal difficult has very few checkpoints, but infinite lives. The hard difficulty, limited lives. But nightmare? One life. One single life to make it from the Prologue all the way to the ending. Considering that the game throws you into the Minecraft idea of "scavenge in the day, survive the night," only surviving a night is next to impossible if you are nowhere near your safehouse, taking away all my lives seems like an excellent idea. Still love the game, but nightmare difficulty can suck a fat one, if you know what I mean.

I played Ultra Nightmare once for the achievement you get for beating the first mission. It took me several tries, but I eventually did it. Out of morbid curiosity, I decided to see how far I could go. I thought for sure I'd die in mission 2. But I survived. And by that point, I had this weird premonition that ended up coming true about exactly where and how I would die: Falling to death in the Argent Tower. After that, I never touched it again.

In the Alien: Isolation section, he says that on nightmare, the xenomorph "Near enough one-shots you...", but doesn't it one-shot regardless of difficulty, just a bit confused here, though the rest of his argument here was valid.

I know I've probably said this on some other video, but top 5 hard/unfair mods in video games. There's surprisingly a lot out there some being deliberately hard (YASH for Skyrim) and some just poorly designed (Prodoomer for the original Doom) and I just think it would be cool to cover.

Okay I know this one doesn't really come up much but Etrian Odyssey has some of the most cruel hard modes in its later games in its series. Like even on easy mode it's still a damn nightmare to complete this series but the challenges in it make it amazing though.

Dead Space 2's hardest difficulty, gave the enemies an incredible amount of attack power, killing Isaac Clark in just a few hits. But that's just the icing on the cake. You are only allowed to save your game a total of three times, making you question where and when would be the best time to save... But...it turns out that saving is almost entirely useless in this mode since dying even ONCE will delete your save file! .................................Wow...... That is just pure evil.

My personal number 1 has to go to mein leban difficultly in the new colossus, this basically the same as doom 2016 but unlike in doom where you needed extreme reflexes and even more extreme aim, new colossus expects you to learn enemy placements, never trigger the alarm most of the time, and going against enemies that can kill you in half a second If you have the platinum for the new colossus, you deserve a medal of honor

Lunatic+ was a paywall as you either need to pay for the DLC abilities and weapons to beat it without 100+ resets per level trying to get a possible to beat combination on enemies
