If I remember right, the Japanese version of Majora's mask didn't have quick saving at owl statues. The only way to save was to go back to dawn of the first day.
@TerminaSavior5 жыл бұрын
And the NA quicksave system is largely the reason why those copies only had two save files instead of the traditional three.
@jonahj95195 жыл бұрын
It was a technical limitation. Due to many NPC’s having complicated schedules and movement patterns, saving all that would be a nightmare, so instead, they made it so you could only save at the start of a 3 day cycle. That way all they had to save was your inventory. The US release lost the third save file to allow for the owl quick saves. I imagine the reason they get deleted after you load them and force you to quit after you make them may have been because there was too much to save and run the game at the same time. That’s just a theory, though.

It sound not so bad until you remember that in the DS version you have to play the game since the very beginning once you get an ending, so to get the True Ending you need to complete the entire game twice! Puzzles included! and some of them are lengthy. At least this was changed in both the sequels and the ports, where you have a timeline you can use to skip to the decision you want to change.

No wonder. 1 megabit (128 kB) wasn't much space even back in the day, and with Diablo there's more to save than just character stats and carried items; I'd suspect the map data to take quite a bit of space (well, at least in terms of those tiny memory card sizes). Requiring the whole memory card for a save could have also been done to be 100% sure that there was enough space to save the whole map of a single game, since it's randomly generated but of a certain total size every time you play.

FINAL FANTASY III (DS) version! Need I say more? This game has NO save points ANYWHERE and can ONLY be saved on the world map. Couple that with the fact that bosses get to attack twice (or three times) each turn, and hit like a truck,. On top of that, the dungeons that they're found in are really long, and some have more than one boss inside. And it gets worse. If you die, you go back to your last save file. All that progress... Poof! Gone! And it still gets worse. The final dungeon of the game has two parts. You can teleport out to save during the first part, but once you beat Xande and start the second part, you cannot leave until you defeat the Cloud of Darkness, and watch the credits. And it still gets even worse. Most of the enemies in the random encounters in the final dungeon are copies of previously fought bosses. And they also get to attack multiple times and hit hard. Did I mention that you can only save outside on the world map?

To make the original Crash Bandicoot's saving issue even worse; saving after getting a gem only saves which gems you have, saving after getting a key only saves which keys you have, and saving after exiting a bonus area only saves the levels you've beaten, none of these things will save the progress you've made on the other things. So, if you cleared a bunch of levels, got a gem in one, saved after getting the gem, but didn't do a bonus area before turning the game off, you keep the gem you got, but you go all the way back to N Sanity Beach.
@PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH5 жыл бұрын
Congratulations, finally someone who got the saving right in that game. Though it's also said in the (American) manual of the game that it works like that. But did you know that only gems and keys are mandatory for 100%? One doesn't have to do a single bonus round that gives the player a save point.
@jruler935 жыл бұрын
True, but if you never save with a bonus area, you're still going to have to go all the way back to N Sanity Beach when loading that save, so there's really no point in not saving with a bonus area.
@PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH5 жыл бұрын
That's a point that's taken. The way the game handles saving is an odd one, once you reach a point, you can decline saving altogether either by seeing the password or with a case of both keys, by jumping to the void (Japanese version has a true way to decline as it doesn't do passwords, but everything applies otherwise). At the next save opportunity of any type, the save will be put up to date. The game remembers everything until one quits to main menu or turns off the console, there's the opportunity to save that to a Memory Card or not. Though I don't get why wouldn't you if you have one. But man, 3 ways to save and each saves something different. I get annoyed every time someone says "get a gem to save" or something like that.
@jruler935 жыл бұрын
You can also not save at Tawna's bonuses by jumping into the void. I usually do that (except at The Lab) to use them to give me extra fruit and lives.

Ah, yes, You could in theory gimmick that to have more than the default LP, but a deck with that much healing is hard to win with. It might explain why a lot of the AIs have random healing cards though. It's a really weird mechanic since you can ignore it. Also you kinda WANT to save all the time. Limited save locations actually do have a purpose though. It means they don't have to figure out how to actually save your location. In RoD you could only save in one spot so loading a save meant you were always at that location. I've seen other games do this too. Like Dragon Quest games that don't let you save inside dungeons or towns and only on the overworld map. IE your save location is a grid coordinate on the overworld map. Now, some of them had multiple overworlds, so it'd also need to save which world it was, but yeah. It technically let you save in towns, BUT, IIRC loading the save would not load you inside the town, it'd be on the overworld next to the town entrance.

My pick would definitely be Legend of the Black Buccaneer. It's a PS2 game, so we'd long since figured out decent ways to save game data, but here's what they gave players: You can only save at shrines that get less common the farther you get from the starting location. You have to use a special resource to save the game at all. This resource is collected from enemies, which get progressively more difficult to kill in that they take more damage, deal more damage with each hit, and become harder to hit at all. And every time you save a game, the price to save your progress increases. They did everything in their power to make this game infuriating. It's no wonder there's no complete playthrough of it online.

For me, the most unique save system has to be the Magic Point system for the Sega CD version of Lunar: Eternal Blue. You gain magic points (different from the MP used to cast spells) from battles and spend an amount equal to Hiro's current level x5 in order to save. The points are also used to upgrade at least one row of spells for each character, which is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY if you want to unlock certain abilities like Jean's Dopple/Slam Dance (which is needed to defeat Lunn).

I didn't mind the save crystals in Tomb Raider 1 since they provided plenty of them and placed them in logical locations where you would actually need them at. Plus the levels were short usually only taking around 30 mins each. But TR3 on PS1 is the absolute worst. That game was easily the hardest of the classic Tomb Raiders. The levels were huge usually taking at least an hour each if you knew what you were doing and several hours if you didn't. There was usually only around 3 to 4 crystals in each level. Mostly hidden in secret areas where it was very easy to die getting to them. I beat the PS1 legitimately once. Never again. After that I used the all weapons cheat since it gives you 99 crystals. Then I got the PC version and never looked back.

Glad to see that someone else agrees with me on the terrible save system of Majora's Mask. For me, the save system is so bad in Majora's Mask, that I think that it ruins the entire game for me, especially because the game can freeze on you, and if it does, and you used an owl statue to save, you will lose a ton of progress, and it is so frustrating.
@GINTegg5 жыл бұрын

@jaredbarker95155 жыл бұрын
The owl statue system in Majora's Mask N64 is really maddening because there are factors besides skill involved that could make you lose progress. If the game freezes or the power goes out, your progress since the last song of time is fked regardless of whether you used an owl statue or not, which is complete BS. If you're in the middle of a three day cycle and suddenly have to stop playing, you either have to lose your progress or leave the N64 on with the game occupying the slot and your file loaded, which prevents anyone else in your family or any roommates from playing their own MM file or any other N64 game unless they're ignorant of how the game works or are okay with sabotaging your progress. On top of that it makes it more likely to lose your progress from a game freeze or power outage. It's still a fun game, but very selfish. The most annoying saving systems are the ones that create auto saves that have no function other than to punish you. In Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, the auto saves will punish you for turning the game off, but creating these auto saves is optional so you can always opt out of this risk by leaving the system on. This is not so in some other games that use auto saves to punish you. This is really frustrating for new players if there's not an option to turn this off. I'm okay with this being an optional thing to make it harder for veteran players, though. If the game has many elements of luck and some of these things can make it extremely difficult to stay alive if you get unlucky, it's even worse. Minecraft uses this system, but you still have the capability of backing up your file on single player worlds if you wish to do so. This can't be done on servers by players, but the luck factor can be circumvented by playing carefully, so I'm okay with it. The biggest offender I've seen with this is Pokemon Emerald at the battle frontier. It has the evil autosaves, and is highly luck dependent, meaning that there is no way to plan for every situation and you will end up being sent back to the start of most challenges multiple times due to things like quick claw + sheer cold and minimize/double team. The crap nugget on top of the garbage pile is that the game actively inflates the chances of you getting unlucky and the opponent trainers getting lucky. It's a well known fact that can be proven by data mining the game.
@ClefairyRox5 жыл бұрын
Regarding Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Red and Blue Rescue Team have dungeons in the postgame that force you to quicksave when you enter them (a few examples being Fiery Field, Lightning Field, Northwind Field, and most of the 99 floor dungeons). So if your luck goes rotten you better pray you have a usable Escape Orb or you're screwed, because otherwise you can't reset your run without losing everything you're carrying. Thankfully this was not in later games.

The Owl Statues in Majora's Mask didn't confuse me as a kid (at least not mechanically) because I was already familiar with a slightly harsher save system. I played a roguelike called Castle of the Winds when I was younger, and like all pure roguelikes, it had permadeath; like most roguelikes, it also had an anti-save scum mechanic that would not let you save without quitting and would delete your save file when you load the game. One major saving grace was that you could save anywhere.

Another SUPER weird (and probably downright evil) save system is Nyet 3. I haven't played it but I did watch Accursed Farms to an overview on it on Ross's Game Dungeon. Basically, like Tomb Raider, you save via a limited amount of items and you buy them in an item shop along with a few other things. The problem is that 1) The game is REAL stingy with the money you're awarded and 2) Several items are necessary to get through difficult levels and you're not told what those are. You can easily screw yourself simply by buy a save point when you needed to spend your money somewhere else and that's just insidious.

"Being able to save makes games a bit easier" TELL ME ABOUT IT! One of my first ever video game consoles aside from the N64 was the Playstation 2. I got Kingdom Hearts after weeks of begging for it, and I was so excited to jump right in and play. However, since I was brand new to gaming at the time, neither I nor my mom knew you had to use a memory cartridge in order to save...... So while Kingdom Hearts is a very merciful game that would return me to where I left off whenever I died, I couldn't actually save the game. Meaning it would be left on when I went to bed or to school. But that was okay. I was doing great. I felt like I was the most amazing gamer ever, because I was able to easily defeat Oogie Boogie, and Sephiroth was a piece of cake. Eventually, I got to one of the last worlds, which had invisible walls that eventually led me to a glowing portal. I went into the cave surrounding the portal, and was about to jump into the light when I realized it was indeed not a trap, when suddenly everything went black. The Playsation shut off, the TV shut off, and it was suddenly considerably darker in the room. My step dad had accidentally shut off the power to the wrong part of the house while he was trying to do some electrical stuff in the master bedroom. Needless to say, the words "devastated" and "distraught" are understatements, and I never forgave that asshole. I tried to get back into it, but couldn't, and spent 13 years avoiding the game, and in those 13 years, I have never finished a single game, because I am too haunted by the memory of never getting to finish my first game I ever played.

Enemy Zero, an obscure Saturn survival horror game where your save data is handled by an in-game device with limited battery life and no way to recharge, and not only saving but even LOADING costs battery life. Thus, dying too many times (and you WILL die a lot, because the primary threat to your life are invisible aliens that can only be detected via an increasing audio ping, can kill you in one hit and can only be killed via a weapon that can only be used at point blank range and has a slow recharge rate to prevent spamming) will eventually render your save file worthless.

Honestly the worst part about Pokemon Colosseum I found was the fact that a single save file for that game uses 48 BLOCKS OF MEMORY CARD SPACE. As someone who only has a single gamecube memory card which is 59 blocks... You can see the problem

Oh man, I forgot about Reshef of Destruction. I remember it had that weird as hell ante system that made me lose because I kept not wanting to risk my cards. Also I think I remember seeing a guide where it says the final boss just has like... 20k Lifepoints. And only saving at home STILL happened in the DS games, but it's less bad because you're forced to your home every night in Nightmare Troubador and Spirit Caller. You're forced in Troubador because shadow-game duelists will mug you once night falls, and you're forced in Spirit Caller because "Woah! It's time to go dorm!"

IIRC, one of the biggest time-eaters in _Pokémon_ save mechanisms has historically been checksums. _D/P_ were particularly aggressive about this, validating *every single box* if you accessed any of them, and typically taking around 15-20 seconds to save as a result (and also being noticeably faster whenever you didn't use the boxes).

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee for PS1. You couldn’t overwrite save files, so every time you saved, it had to be to a new file. This caused the memory card to fill up fast, so you would basically have to manually delete the old file every time you saved.

I think Majora’s Mask’s save system is unique and I appreciate it for being a unique piece of game design. When you start a 3 day cycle, you’re forced to kinda plan out your actions for it a bit so because if you fail and run out of time, you gotta do the whole thing over again. You get no safety nets, and I think it’s fun.

I disagree with you on Majora's Mask. I like how you save it on the N64 because it prevents players from cheating and reloading a previous save file if they failed something during the 3 day period. That's the consequence of the mechanic and it is as it should be. The 3DS version ruins the point of time travel and spirit of the original.
@antimatter30845 жыл бұрын
But if the save system directly inconveniences the player than the save option in the 3DS version is far better especially since that game is on a handheld.
@Mudkip9715 жыл бұрын
@@antimatter3084 It doesn't inconvenience. You can make at any point temporary owl saves and that's fine. If you were allowed to reload a save after already being reloaded than that's just cheating the system.

I don't know, I for one really liked the system in Majora's Mask - Song of Time and the statues being the only ways to save made me play the game in what felt like chapters - start the cycle, do what I have to do in a location, go to a new location, save by the statue, continue later, or just reset the cycle. I will concede that it is a bit stupid that the save is a one-time thing, but at the same time, it is somewhat flavorful - the entire gimmick of the game is that it keeps track of where you are in the timeline, and it knows you moved on from the point at which you saved... so I really never had an issue with it. Maybe that's just me though

Yeah, I never really had a problem with Pokemon Colosseum's save system? It doesn't make the game harder at all, it just makes it slightly more tedious because of backtracking. I don't really see how it's any different from other games that have specific save spots, such as Metroid.
@SolstaceWinters5 жыл бұрын
#4 reminds me a little of Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter. You had "Save Tokens" which allowed you to save at the pay-phone lookin' save spots in the game. Yes that's two situations in one, both 'limited saves' and 'specific places allowed to save at'. They made it a tad more interesting as based on many factors in the game like time it took to beat the game, total level, foes beat, depth in bonus dungeon, total money, extra areas explored, and the other hallmarks of a Metroidvania game (which BoF5 is not), the game rated you a score ranging from 1/8192 to 1/4 (the game's version of Ranking all people in the world of BoF5), and the better at the game you were the higher the rank got (up to the 1/4, something I've never been able to do, 1/8 was the best I could ever do). Upon the next new game+, you'd port over bonus XP, equipment, money, abilities, progress on your bonus town/dungeon, etc etc. The higher the rank, the more rooms you could explore in the dungeon, effectively offering you better xp, loot, abilities, and not-from-Ryu's-perspective cutscenes. It was REALLY really cool, even if it was too hard for me to perfect the game. Maybe I should go back to it sometime...

saving is not a difficulty metric it causes frustration, frustration causes gamers to quit the game and in many circumstances it makes you throw your controller, when it's done wrong and requiring backtracking over and over, stealth games require a good save anywhere at any time system and also a checkpoint system because stealth is more strategy than action
