3, 4, and 5 are pretty good, but 1, well. And #2 is ridiculous. Find a time and place that works for you, and don't assume what works for you is going to work for everyone else.
@jplflyer7 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but rule 2 is exceedingly closed-minded. Morning people assume everyone else is lazy, sleeping away the most productive part of the day. The arrogance is outstanding. The reality is that people are different. There are times I get up and write early, but that is almost only when I'm at the end of a novel (the last 25%) and the story has me gripped so hard I can't sleep more than a few hours at a time. But the morning is not necessarily the most productive time. It takes time for my mind to really get bubbling, but I'm frequently writing until very late at night, and I do some of my best work after everyone else has gone to bed and no one is bugging the crap out of me. Getting up early works for people who are productive when they get up early. Staying up late works for people who are productive when they stay up late. And both habits are equally legitimate. So Rule Two SHOULD be: figure out when your most productive time is to write, and then protect that time so you are free to use it.
@henryboleszny3597 жыл бұрын
I chuckled at that rule, too. Mornings for me are the WORST time to write because that's the guaranteed time for interruptions. I tend to get my writing done between midday and midnight. I guess that's where Rule 5 comes in - establishing a ritual that works for you and follow it.

Anne Rice has stated in many interviews that she simply cannot write prior to 10 am, so while I myself work best from about 11 am - 6 pm, I also find I can write from 11 pm to about 4 am, but a morning person I will never be. As far as the rituals he mentions - they become triggers for the mind to say, "Oh, okay. We're getting ready to write now." It is a very human thing to do. We all have rituals when we get ready for bed, or preparing to go to work, etc. The repetition or routine is the way we train our minds to get our "heads into the game". Personally, I love it and when I have time for those triggers, my writing is much easier and more productive.

Step one: grab the reader's attention. Step two: keep the writer's attention! Beyond that, there's some helpful stuff about sentences and plot development. But if you can't get a person's attention, they aren't going to read your damn book! (or if they do, it's a school assignment. I've a book on nuclei and particle physics that is beyond dull. A single paragraph can put me to sleep; a couple of pages has the same effect as a medically induced coma. At the end of the semester I couldn't sell the book. I mean, no one would buy it.)

I have a 3 stage morning ritual to help me wake up and prepare me for my daily writing. 1. After making my bed and showering I play this game on my phone called World of Guns. Its this game where you disassemble and reassemble guns. I play it for like 10- 15 minutes, It helps pull away the morning fog and get my brain working. 2. I doodle in my field notes notebook (I love the Field Notes company, look them up their cool!) I heard somewhere doodling increases creativity. Im not sure if thats true but I found another perk from it that helps me allot. My first challenge when writing is writing the first few sentences. I've found by doodling it removes that challenge, I'm not afraid to start writing anymore after doing it. 3. I meditate for ten minutes. This is the buffer stage that removes the layer of morning fog completely, puts me in an all around peaceful state of mind, if I don't feel like writing I tell myself, I can be lazy today, I can sit here for as long as I want, I can keep doing this for as long as possible to avoid doing work. I never reach ten full minutes, I usually get restless then I grab my tablet and start writing immediately. I've been developing my overall daily schedule for the last 8 months, I just started this three stage morning thing 2 weeks ago. I think I'm going to start timing myself, 10 minutes for each activity because I've just been testing it out. I like it. I've been way more productive since I started and so far I haven't skipped any days for writing.

Offcourse the idea and the story themselves are very important but the language (usage of proper words, phrases, sentences...) is one of the most valuable elements that should be taken extremely serious. Hi internet! So, as someone who actually did research into this, I just wanna say that this...is kinda bogus lol. Most creative people do better work at night, many of the best writers (including Anne Rice) don't write everyday. Self doubt is a driving force for artistic people. It's what drives them to break rules and think outside of the box. Odd rituals are...kinda useless. Wanna write a book? Sit down and write it. This was an interesting video, but please be clear in the future that this is your opinion since much of what you've said is actually false and can make it harder for people to write. Art is a very subjective and personal thing. I see a lot of writers looking for selfhacks and miracles, but nothing works better than just planting your ass in a chair and writing. Stop looking for quick fixes and do the work that deserves to be done. Writing a book is damn hard and a lot of "writing advice" is just procrastinating.

Everything that you write improves your skill, even writing Comments on YT or other sites. When I write emails I always use the classic rules of letter writing that I was taught in Grammar School (as we usd to call it), and I never use abbreviations. We are all creatures of habit. If I start writing "altho" for "although," I might do that unconsciously in my serious writing, which wouldn't look very good to an editor. Good Luck.

There are so many techniques to starting the process of writing. I think the most popular is automatic writing, a topic I'll cover in the near future. What it involves is using something as a stimulus (such as an image or word) and writing anything that comes to mind, focusing on never stopping. Eventually, you'll be able to pick certain ideas that you think are radioactive (as in they stand out). Then you can develop those ideas further and turn them into a story. Hope it helps.

I don’t exactly struggle, in fact I have all A+ In English. All I really want to do is find a proper way to be even more advance for English.

I love your videos on this channel, Vic! Maybe you could talk about writer's psychology? It plays a big role when it comes to writing and in my view contributes greatly to writer's block. If you suffer from conditions like stress, anxiety, depression, etc (as a lot of writers do) writing, in spite of it being your passion, can be a struggle.

Writer's psychology would be an interesting topic. I would love to cover something like that in the future, but not soon. I think it would be a great point of discussion because I think most writer's suffer from something, mostly imposter syndrome.

I urge you to dismiss your staple use of the pronoun "you". "You do this, you do that." Do I really, now?

Haha. I don't know how I made that error, but that has been haunting me for years now. Maybe I'll make an updated video. :)

What qualifies a person to be an editor? You could show “The Road” to an editor and they could think it’s a piece of trash when really it’s one of the best psychological horror stories of all time!

I like your video and I write everyday while I'm in school. I mostly write when everybody is yelling in the cafeteria. I try my best when I write. I have a problem when I go in too deep into the character that is talking but I don't know how to stop it. Can you give me some advice Keep making videos

Victor Hugo did not write the Count of Monte Cristo, that was Alexandre Dumas

Try to get a writing job (at least for a while, or maybe Part-Time) where you have a deadline.
