I actually completely missed it in my playtrough, where I had a rather anti-climax final boss fight. It wasn't until months later I heard there was a mirrored castle where you can find the "real final boss". Didn't felt like returning to the game to collect all remaining stuff so I left it at the alternative ending.

2-S that was recently added to ULTRAKILL is probably one of my favorite secret levels for a lot of reasons: First, some context: Secret levels in ULTRAKILL are based around a special gimmick that separates it from the main levels. Prelude-S is straight-up horrifying with having to navigate a dark maze with the only source of light being a skull, constantly being hunted down by what the game calls "Something Wicked." 1-S is literally the Witness, a calming experience to be honest. Second, the hype: For months since the game's initial early access release people could find the entrance to 2-S, but it was blocked off by a "Under Construction" sign. A lot of us, myself included, wondered what the theme of 2-S would be. Would it take advantage of the advanced movement tech the game has to offer? Will it be something different? Finally, the reveal: When entering the secret level, the screen fades to black and text appears on screen: describing what appears to be a journal entry regarding someone trying to reach a destination in a short amount of time. It's described in a dreary manner and it made me wonder: what am I going up against? Do I have to navigate another maze? Do I have to escape something in a limited amount of time? I was on the edge of my seat. *And then the screen faded to a picture of the main character dressed as a schoolgirl, the secret level was a fucking Visual Novel.* I lost my shit and burst out laughing. The text that was described? It's the cliched trope of someone running late for school with breakfast in their mouth, rushing towards the building.

Secret levels seems to not get talked about as much as secret bosses do. I do love finding hidden unexpected levels as much as bosses and easter eggs. Of course like secret bosses secret levels can be pretty challenging and will take time to complete and master them. Almost like in a way finding them is ironically the easy part.

I feel like secret levels don't get talked about as much because the idea of levels in video games has been declining for a long time. As open world becomes more popular we have less levels and more missions and to do lists. So devs have changed how they hide things.

So, wait... saving Richter is supposed to be a *SECRET* part of SotN? The game talks repeatedly about doing it, and makes it clear that's what you're supposed to want to do, so I always just kinda assumed that avoiding his fight 'til you had the right stuff was the only way to actually finish it, and that the upside down was just the game's regular progression. Huh.

A really cool secret level is Niflheim from Tales of Symphonia. Not only is it so obscurely hidden most people don't even know it exists, it's a 20-floor dungeon with unique visuals and music that becomes a main plot-point in the sequel. On top of all that it has an added boss fight in the remake that is bar-none the hardest fight in the entire game.

Here's an idea: best/most creative ways developers solved player exploits. For example, the way players were exploiting the way meditating makes farm animals respawn in order to loot them for massive piles money over and over again in The Witcher 3. So CDPR added a powerful monster that will spawn when it notices you doing this and makes the exploit much harder to use.

The fact that the Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal secret levels aren't on this list is a tragedy. An entire hidden level only accessed through either completing the game 100%, or through a very obscure "pseudo" out-of-bounds, or a teleporter that only activates at 2 am on the PS2 clock. The hidden level is a replica of the floor plan of the office of Insomniac games, creators of RAC, and fittingly the level is called the Insomniac Museum. It contains exclusive audio recordings of various developers discussing the game's internal workings, showcases incomplete/cut content, lets you even enter a sort of debug mode to create your own particle effects, has programmable and extra playable minigames, and entire testing areas demonstrating world units, jump height/distance, and walkable angles. It is truly an incredible secret, but its always left out of these sorts of lists. As are most PS2 classics. Everyone just goes for the Nintendo classics, as usual.

It's weird to refer to the inverted castle in SotN as an "area" or a "level". It literally doubles the size of the game. Also, SotN came out in 97, when many still didn't have internet. I feel like the vast majority of games *used* to have secret levels. I feel like it's not so common anymore. Either that, or devs have just gotten better at hiding them. Note that I do think there's a difference between a "hidden" or "secret" level and an "optional" or "bonus" level. If Mile High Club just "unlocks" after beating the game, I don't think it really counts as a secret level. I'm still on the fence if, for instance, Goldeneye 64's extra levels would count, since I seem to recall their existence being obvious, but the method to unlocking them *not* being shown anywhere in the game.
