Have both the Casio and Timex Expedition. Especially impressed by Timex's meticulous ability to align the second hand right in the middle of two indices. In contrast to the Spring Drive which claims to represent the fleeing of time, the Timex wants you to forget where you started and where you're going, and be mindful of the present in between. Even the loud ticking sound is purposefully zen.

Good list. If you can stretch the budget to $150 and you’re willing to shop around, you could get a great 3 watch collection to really catch the watch collection bug. A slightly dressier Seiko 5 something like a SNK789 ($80), a Duro ($30) and a 5600 ($40). You’ve then got a work/dress watch, a great diver and a G-Shock as a beater.

My first watch was a Wenger Swiss Military which was over 20 years ago, still have it to this day and still works. Today, I have a plethora of watches, all in the affordable category. I just can't see spending thousands of $$$ on Swiss watches, ie. Rolex, Tudor, Omega. there are so many affordable high quality options today, I just don't see the need unless its someone buying it as a status symbol.

First watches. Got a Timex Scout at Target. Had to return as calendar digit failed to change position. Replaced it with a Casio Tough Solar Digital/Analog. Can’t remember the model #. Still possess it. Second was an Orient Ray ii. Blue dial. Very accurate. Still own. Third, Orient Defender. Large dial. Won’t hand wind or hack. Black dial and bracelet model. Still own. Fourth, Rolex Sub Date. Current model. Got a call from AD, so pounced on it. Still have. Don’t wear often. Finally, Rolex Explorer 39. Got new. Wear every day. Enjoy it greatly. Honorable mention, Marathon 34mm General Purpose Quartz. Latest version with metal crown. Black color. Very, very precise. Small but workable.

The perfect EDC watch is a "set and forget" so never worry about it deciding to run out of battery today or lose time. So solar/kinetic charging, and radio timekeeping. Its got to have a perpetual calendar, its better for a watch to NOT give the day of the month if it falsely says its the 31st when its the 1st. You don't need timers or alarms, your phone can do unique things. A wristwatch is supposed to save your phone, you're not pulling your phone out just to check the time. And youre watch isnt supposed to become your phone with distracting features.

Timex are way too loud, for sure. Makes sense if you are a nurse though, who might use the watch to take heart-rate measurements. Lots of curb appeal, but it's something I stopped using within a week. Might be worth $10 as a learning experience, but not much else. The Bambino and the Duro are two great choices though; I got a v4 bambino that I rarely wear, but it still holds up when I do wear it. The Duro is super affordable, well made, and people constantly complement me on it -- I just added a metal bracelet and replaced the bezel with a new one for a few bucks more. Problem with the duro is that it is heavy. The Casio watches are great; they are super lightweight, can be worn with dress or casually, and are extremely affordable also. The battery in them lasts forever also. I bought a few and I wear them a lot as they fit very easily under a dress cuff or sweater. These days I tend to wear titanium field watches and play with different styles of straps. The collection has long been complete; now I just am having fun.

Prefer field watches for EDC, the Casio BM8180 at 37mm with solar is my choice if cannot find the Victorinox Infantry with brown dial gold indices on sale for $99. Have both, expect my primary field watch on wrist to be the retired Seiko Alpinist with GREEN dial. Changing the strap provides wide variety of options with its sapphire crystal and 200M water resistance. For dress option instead of the Bambino would choose the Seiko SUP880, a solar verison of the Cartier Tank., easily found under the $100. I guess I prefer quartz without the battery, thus solar watches around 38 mm (wrist 6.75) but over the years have purchased many of all types.

When buying my First watch I had the following in mind. 1)DURABLE 2) AROUND 70-80$ 3) LOOKS 4)MATERIAL 5)Maintenance 6)Minimum Longevity(5-7 years) (Note: CAPS are essential others are optional) Getting back into watches after using a FOCE watch back in Highschool I wanted to make sure I didn't have to baby it. Being a student and living in a developing country to boot ,it had to be under 90$ ,as I'm surely the one paying the price ,tax and shipping. It had to look good for some formal and many Casual events. I mostly switched my old watches due to the electroplated/ painted cover wearing of and looking rusted due to sweat and humidity. If I run into problems I must be able to service or repair where I live, sadly automatic and mechanical watches aren't serviced where I live. In the end I bought a Casio Duro( The 1st watch I bought on my own :D) which can't be found in most Asian and Middle eastern countries . I'm not sure how long it'll last but so far I love it and if it'll last me 3- 5 years I'll consider it a worthy investment. [As of writing this I've owned the watch for only 3 days.]

100%. The Seiko 5 series of watches are THE choice for the entry level watch enthusiast. I think it's best to "skip" quartz movements and go right for an automatic watch. There is something about having a little machine on your wrist that does not rely on a battery.

It might make an interesting video to ask “Can you have multiple watches but not have a collection?” In the Casio line, I’ve got a GG-1000 mud master, a G-Shock GW-5600, and an older Tough Solar model that was G-Shockish. Seiko - SRPA21, SNK 803 and 809, a solar chronograph with alarm, and a beautiful, older dual tone quartz chronograph. Is it a “collection”? I don’t know. I'm not sure you understand what hacking is. The Orient Bambino hand winds so you don't have to wear it to wind it. Hacking indicates that the second hand stops when you pull out the crown for more accurate setting. I can't think of a reason to need hacking in an automatic watch under $100 as it won't be accurate enough to matter anyway. On that note the Bambino is also not under $100. Usually around $130USD.

Completely agree with with Seiko 5 makes so much sense. Cheap, mechanical and a see through caseback so you begin to understand mechanical movements. Then after this go for an SKX or Padi for a diver if you actually truly want one. Then after this wait for a true luxury piece in the $3000+ price range even if it takes 2 years to save for. Else you’ll spend loads of money wasting your time on cheaper brands that you will end up selling. Only watches exempt from this rule would be a nice vintage dress watch, an or a second hand Hamilton/ second hand other well known Swiss brand like Tissot for half retail as a nicer everyday watch. Everything else you will just regret in my opinion. I’ve learn’t this from experience lol. Also FUCK MICRO BRANDS! You’ll end up liquidating for a fraction of what you paid and regretting owning them when you want a true luxury piece. Controversial opinion I know and you may not agree but it’s only my honest opinion.

If he's into the latest technological gadgets, then a smart watch. If he's into military, then perhaps something with military heritage. The chances of them liking a watch because it's a watch is slim. You need to build on their other passions.

The Casio duro is beaut, I would do a great job instead of a submariner homage

I always enjoy your reviews. However, this watch enthusiast must disagree with you and other enthusiasts who say that time accuracy is not that important. Wrong. It is is called a timepiece. If one does not care about time, why bother to wear a watch???

Seiko 5 or any orient entry level .

The Oriënt isn't versatile at all. It is too big for a dress watch. The strap size is also not versatile. That domed mineral crystal is easily scratched. The Casio F 91W and the Seiko SNK plus the Citizen NY0004 in blue are what I would buy if I started today. After that just go for the grail watch and skip everything else.

Under $100 get a gshock, under $500 get a seiko, orient, Hamilton field watch, under $1000 get an oris - if you want entry into the world of a good solid watch get an oris
