I think the argument is less about it "being interactive" and more about the fact that you can easily overlook the artistic qualities and just enjoy the video game for...being a game. Which is still questionable, because you can argue people can do the same for flim.

@@MegaKH2fan The interactive angle is also questionable at best since there have been DOZEN of interactive art pieces and exhibits in museums in the past. I think the closest comparison is saying games are like toys and people don't consider toys art, but you can easily make an argument in the opposite direction. Toys are manufactured? So is basically every other form of art. You can enjoy them without needing to think about them? Same thing with almost every other form of art. It's a weirdly unnuanced point from a guy who is usually pretty nuanced.

You can ignore the artistic qualities of *any* form of art. You don't need to know the deeper meaning behind works like Starry Night or Great Wave to think they just look... nice. You can watch Star Trek: The Next Generation without considering what lessons it might have to teach about how humans should proceed, and about human nature, and just think Picard is really cool. When you listen to classical music, there's nothing requiring you to think about the artistic intentions of the composer- it's perfectly normal, and very common, to just enjoy the sound of it. So that argument doesn't really work... You could apply it to *anything* already considered art and arrive at the same conclusions. Edit- Plus, I think limiting 'artistic qualities' to what people typically consider to be art is narrow-minded. Video games are unprecedented; they can do a lot of things and explore a lot of ideas that art never could before, due to their level of interaction. This interactivity is often cited as the main reason they *cannot* be art, but I think it's their strongest attribute. Games open up an entire spectrum of new avenues to pursue- the very method of interaction can be used to express yourself or your ideas. Morality systems, dialogue choices, even just the design process of making a fun game is an art of a sort- just like how comedy and action have artistic merits, so too does designing for fun.

At the time, Sonic Lost World’s 25 lives were a nice-ish bonus, because at its release, collecting a hundred rings didn’t give you an extra life for some reason, which I guarantee you is a big reason why so many people thought the game was so punishing. Then Sega patched the game to add the “100 rings = extra lives” back in, effectively making the preorder bonus completely worthless. Edit: Hold on now, I’m not defending this in any way. I’m just offering a possible reason as to why Sega decided to add such a mundane preorder bonus, even if it’s not a very good one.

If they keep the customization from Forces for the next game, they could pull a Mario Odyssey and use rings for buying cosmetics, incentivizing not getting hit (they would just have to keep the costs in the "shop" low so people don't have to grind stages for cosmetics)

So how about Top Five Worst Localization? Such an unappreciated process that is very important when shipping games beyond your own country. If you think bad translation is bad, believe me, terrible localization can give birth to massive glitches, and even some "controversial" changes. My biggest suggestion Ar Tonelico 2, which is my favorite game of all time... but I can't deny how bad NIS America did the localization. It's not even the fault of Gust since the Japanese and PAL version works really well, but the localization team was so lazy about it, created a glitch that caused many people to be stuck since a boss' move is bugged, causing the game to freeze. If you want to really see how big of a mess it is, check the fan translation team who fixed it and explained in detail how bad it was. Then there's Persona: Revelation... yeah. Mark, that's all I got to say.

The zenithian dragon quest trilogy on the ds. Puns are fun and all but thick accents in text without voice acting are a bit harder to work with. As in, they use expressions only native speakers would get. And considering you are encouraged to go everywhere, you better be multilingual. Also, if you are playing in spanish, Zamoksva citizens speak use fragmented sentences and letters from the russian alphabet. Not the best choices for a trilogy where you need to ask for directions to continue. Thankfully, later games downplay this to a few mannerisms making understanding what you need to do much easier.

I think it depends on what game it is, CoD or Tekken, probably not art, except for certain levels in CoD. Death Stranding or Dark Souls, totally art. Until Dawn or Heavy Rain, basically movies, and we think those are art. Fifa or Madden, art in the same way "Modern art" is really art.

Me, I've only ever pre-ordered a game if I wanted to send a clearer signal that "yeah, this is a good thing, make more of it"... with the exception of Smash 4. There, the main motivator was the additional controller and more importantly the adapter, as I correctly surmised that would be extremely difficult to find. The fact it works with Ultimate only reaffirms my choice. I should note this wasn't a pre-order bonus, but rather add-ins that would've been rather rare otherwise. Of course, having extra goodies is nice... might influence _how_ I preorder once I've decided to do so.

Nintendo have done some pretty useless ones notably between 5-10 years ago in the Wii U/3DS era. I have a ton of keychains, posters and steel cases saved up from them. The best thing I got was this small game card holder shaped like a Yoshi egg, from Yoshi’s New Island I think. It holds 6 DS games and I still use it even now.

Ever since the majority of preorders turned into content removed from the game and given as “bonus downloads” I have not been interested in preorder bonuses. It used to be that you got something physical and worthwhile. I remember the xenosaga ep1 cardstock poster, shadow hearts 2 giving you a copy of shadow hearts 1 as a primer for the second, Wind Waker giving you a copy of ocarina of time and the previously untranslated master quest on a disc, etc. Hell even some games just gave you a demo disc for preordering if it wasn’t a huge release. Arc the lad Twilght of Spirits comes to mind there.

As an example of a nice-ish preorder bonus, see Mega Man 11, which gives access to piano versions of the robot master stage themes which you can toggle on/off in the options. It doesn't alter the gameplay, but it's not completely useless (like extra lives that either you don't need or that get used up and are suddenly just not there anymore), and given that Mega Man 11 is a pretty good game all things considered, it's a nice little cherry on top.

Bad pre-order bonuses I feel would be bonuses that fail at incentivizing the pre-order. Something like the 25 extra lives or 200 potions are such luke warm bonuses that they fail at what they were meant to do. Then there's failed special editions, which can be considered pre-orders you pay extra for, which could be a whole other video itself.

Honestly my most hyped preorder bonuses were the poster for Zelda Links Awakening 2019 and the Animal Crossing New Horizons poster. I have them on my walls in my room and its nice to have something like those up. Back in the day we had trading stamps. Whatever you bought came with stamps. In the UK we had three or four main types and when you had enough of them for what you wanted you could trade them in either over the counter or via a catalogue. For instance if you smoked enough of a particular companys cigarettes you could even get a car. Handy because by that stage you'd be on an iron lung anyway. But I digress. Some kind of take it or leave it loyalty scheme for pre ordering is about the only thing I could see working.

This is why I normally only order special editions that are from franchises I know of are quality, like Xenoblade X and 2's special editions. However, if I'm uncertain on how it'll turn out (like say with Persona Q2) I'll skip on it. This really saved my butt in 2018 when the Jump Force Collectors Edition was announced and I saw that amazing statue of Luffy, Naruto, and Goku. But seeing that the game itself was just another arena brawler and how shaky that genre has been in recent years, I waited. I did eventually get the statue, but through Ebay and for $40. So I'd say I made a pretty good choice.

I agree the Pre-order for Mankind Divided was bad, but the previous one for Human Revolution was decent. Even if it was near impossible to understand how to claim it. But the stylish metal case, game art book, and full sized poster was a nice counterpoint to paying full price for a discounted preorder to get the collector's edition for the price of the normal game.

I wish that would would get a shirt with preorders. It would be cool to have shirts going back to gamecube/Xbox. While most of them wouldn’t fit, you could probably make a cool blanket out of them. Or I wish that when you preorder a new game in a series you would get an old one. Like they did with windwaker

The worst thing with glow-in-the-dark condoms is that you should be wearing them for like a minute before turning off the lights. If you just leave them open basking in the light before putting on, they'll just look like a radioactive zebra. Trust me.

Wind Waker for GC had the best pre-order bonus. It came with a disc with Ocarina of Time and OoT Master Quest.

Here's a bad one, WWE 2k20 not only was the game bad, you had to wait a month after launch to then have to unlock the preorder character through a tower. One up side is that the first dlc was free and all but the last dlc was actually ok

I typically only pre-order special editions of a game I am already excited for like Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade 2, or Octopath Traveller.
