Who’s the best brokerage company for Treasury Bills, who's the worst & why? That's what we'll be talking about in this video - Top Four Brokers For T-Bills | How To Buy Treasury Bills 2023.
Now, T-Bill yields have & will most likely continue to fluctuate on a daily/ weekly basis - that's what markets typically do - but with the Federal Reserve’s recent announcement that they’ll keep raising rates in 2023, it seems T-Bill rates will keep their general upward trend for awhile longer.
I’m going to cover Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Vanguard & TD Ameritrade based on my personal experience with them between September and December of this year on T-Bill buy orders ranging in size from $1,000 to $25,000 - so watch on!

Thank you so much for your video! I was going to go to Fidelity to create my T-Bill ladder but after a rep argued with me over still having an old employer's 401K program associated with my login and name (a program I never contributed to), I hung up the phone and went to Schwab! Clearly, I was guided in the right direction. Thanks for your excellent videos! I heard about you on Suze Orman's Women & Money podcast and now I share your KZbin channel as well! Hi Jennifer, I would love a video on how you do a manual 17 week T Bill renewal in Fidelity-do they send me an email when my money is available to reinvest? Do I have to wait a week before I can reinvest? Any tips on how to manage all the purchases. Do you use Excel, your planner, what do you track, etc. Thanks for considering

I wanted to purchase bond in my Roth IRA at Schwab, thanks to you, I paid attention to "survivor's option," there was X on it, which I couldn't change. I talked Schwab but they wouldn't change it either. Only Treasury bonds showed X, not CDs though. I got upset that took money out in order to put it in Roth IRA at NFCU, they offer 7Y CD at 4.25%. I really wanted to invest our Roths in long term Treasury bond. What do you think? I want to know your opinion. You can't be too careful with your money these days, which I am sick of it. I almost took money out of Roth, so that I can purchase in Treasury Direct. Thank you for educating us.

I recently got three t-bills through Fidelity, and I got the transfer right away. I was able to place my order immediately. I had already five CDs and had the same fast experience. I been following you, and wanted insight on a reliable online financial institution to consolidate most of my cash, and simplify things as I enter retirement. I have decided to also bank the checking's account with them. I am slowly closing my Wells Fargo account. I have two important automatic payments I have to transfer to the new institution, and I do not want to mess things up.

As a long term E*Trade customer, I find their platform quick and easy to use. Only seconds to navigate to the Secondary Market page for Treasuries Bills or any of many other categories (under "Trading" select "Bonds & CDs".) I really like their over view page compared to Fidelity, where I also have an account. The Auction market can be accessed under the "Tools and Resources" tab. Yes; that's not an obvious or intuitive label. But now that I know, it's fairly easy to find. So, I don't understand the statement that it took a while to find information. I do understand they don't offer auto rollover and how that may have taken a while to find. Considering that as interest rates begin to taper, individuals may move to longer durations and the auto roll over feature will not be as important as the spread. Also, since TD Ameritrade is merging into Schwab within the new year, please reconsider including E*Trade in future comparisons. And thank-you for making such wonderful video's. They are very helpful!

One of the drawbacks with using a broker, at least for Schwab, is losing a week for the reinvestment. Ie, When a 4-week Tbills matures in a Tuesday, the reinvestment would be for the following Tuesday’s 4-week Tbill. Going through Treasury Direct, the reinvestment happens the same day as the previous maturity day (a 4-week Tbill matures in a Tuesday and you’re right back in another 4-week Tbill the same day).
@DiamondNestEgg
@DiamondNestEgg Жыл бұрын
If you choose auto-roll, that doesn't happen. That's why the availability of auto-roll is ranked in the video.
@aquon14
@aquon14 Жыл бұрын
That’s strange. I have the Tbills (4 week) in schwab on auto roll, however the purchase upon renewal is for the week after the maturity date (next Tuesday). I’m going to have to check to is if I just read it wrong (but I don’t think did).
@aquon14
@aquon14 Жыл бұрын
@@DiamondNestEgg I just confirmed it. For Schwab, the auto-roll (reinvestment) has a one week delay. The funds on 4-week T-Bill that matures on a Tuesday is put in the following week's 4-week T-bill.

Great video! I had a TD ameritrade account already, but after starting to watch you and wanting to buy T Bills I decided to open a fidelity account. At the time it seemed to be easier to purchase on their site. When I transferred in my money from my bank which happened fairly quickly, they allowed my to immediately by $25,000 in T Bills. They held the rest of the cash (pending) for 4 business days or 7 consecutive days then it was released. I called in and they told me that was policy. A bit frustrating, but I haven’t had any issues since then. I’m glad I opened the fidelity account. I’d love a video on how to buys stock, etfs and mutual funds on fidelity. It seems more complicated that Td. I guess I’m just used to TD. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Learning a ton from you. I'm a few years from retirement and have way too much in savings earning squat. I'm looking at doing a T-Bill Ladder (love that video, too!) but am curious as to why you didn't compare Treasury Direct to the Brokerage firms? I'm leery of going the Brokerage route because honestly, I don't want them attacking me with sales calls on other investment opps through their firms. I think Treasury Direct is something I can control without exposing myself to a plethora of Brokerage sellers. Thoughts?

I already have vanguard, fidelity, and treasury direct accounts. I went with vanguard because their general user infeface was much easier to understand than fidelity or treasury direct for t-bills. For the 1 week waiting period, I just plan ahead. Plus they offer a competitive interest rate, currently over 4%, with the settlement fund so it really has minimal impact on my overall return.

I opened an account at Merrill Edge basically to get the bonus. Once I got it, I was out of there. Everything about them as a full service brokerage is horrible. I do manage accounts on Etrade, Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard and TD Ameritrade. I agree with your analysis on the purchasing process and customer service. Additionally, I recently had t-bills maturing on January 31, 2023. Schwab, Fidelity and TD all had the funds available to me on the date of maturity. Etrade didn't have them available until the following day. his was confirmed to me by the Fixed Income Desk. I also agree that process to buy treasuries is definitely not user friendly although once you get used to it it's easy. But there is no auto-roll. The hold you mentioned from Vanguard is ridiculous. I've just done money markets there and they recently offered an interest account but their customer service is minimal.

On Fidelity’s account it looks as though you get interest on cash available to trade while it sits like about 2% this week I believe , which is a heap better than my local credit union offers. Also I called to cancel auto roll on a T bill yesterday in Fidelity it was about 5 minutes wait which was okay the people were very good. Thanks for all your information and Merry Christmas 🎄

Thoughts on T-Bill interest rate on 17 week T-Bill auction price is 4.6% My sweep acct in Vanguard 7 day current yield is 4.2% Based on 10K T-bill I would make 12.75 additional interest and living in NV I still get the state and local tax break on all cash accounts. Not to mention the sweep account based on the interest rate environment will be going up during the 4 month span. How much cash if any would it be worth investing to make it worth it on the 4 month bills? Am I missing something? Also based on the math what are your thought on 6 month T-bills?

Hi Jennifer, T-bill rates for 4, 8,17, & 26 weeks are recently going down compared to the previous autions. The fed is continuing raising interest rate. What would cause T-Bill rates to lower ? What information/news should I be watching for to educate myself since I do not know the rate before purchasing (Treasury Direct). There is Federal money market VMFXX that pays 4.2% and I can withdraw anytime, so it does not make sense to buy 4 or 8 weeks T-Bills that currently pay less than 4.2% I am just a beginner trying to learn more about financial investment. Thanks to your AWESOME videos, I have learned and bought I bonds in September and have bought T-bill since Octorber this year. I have been buying them since from Treasury Direct, sometimes from Merrill and new issue from Vanguard just because I already have accounts with them. Treasury Direct still have the best rate.

I have Schwab and E*Trade accounts. I've had my Schwab account since the 1990s and can confirm Schwab has always had great customer service. I really wish all customer service was done the way Schwab does it, especially in different industries. My experiences with E*Trade have been pretty good (especially when compared to say phone or cable companies) but recently since getting bought by Morgan Stanley, feel some departments are applying sales pressure to get me to move all my funds under their control. That will NEVER happen, and I might move everything to Schwab instead where I feel the customer service is much better. Just my experience. I hope this is helpful to others.

Thank you for the video. Not sure why you prefer the 17 week T-bill over others. Be that as it may, the auto-roll evaluation needs to be redone. Only Fido and Treasury Direct offer real auto-roll. The problem with Treasury Direct is trying to sell before maturity. Schwab's auto-roll is FAKE. The T-bill matures and they reinvest a week after maturity. You lose a week's treasury interest every time you roll. Schwab's own interest rate is tiny. With Schwab you can manually place your order online to roll, but that is not auto-roll. With Vanguard you have to call to roll. No fee to place the order and the Bond Desk people are very nice. No auto-roll on TD Ameritrade, either. So in my book, Fido does the best job overall.

Don’t agree on auto-roll rating, fidelity purchases new T-Bill week prior to auction so you do not lose a week of interest. Schwab you lose a week. Also, money in settlement fund at fidelity earns more interest than schwab. My opinion is Fidelity is a better choice.

@@TomTOM-kd6et Will not know for sure until the end of the month when my 8 week T-Bill comes due. Fidelity CSR in their fixed income department assured me that I would not lose a week of interest since they anticipate my T-Bill coming due a week prior to maturity and submit it to auction then. Therefore, my expectation is the day one T-Bill matures the same day the next T-Bill starts due to selecting the auto-roll option.
