Demonstration of the amount of fuel flowing into 1 of the 8 cylinders of a Top Fuel Dragster or Funny Car at the NHRA Museum in Pomona California.
"This exhibit built by Waterman Racing Products demonstrates the enormous volume of Nitromethane racing fuel that is pumped into just one cylinder of the eight cylinder engine in an NHRA Top Fuel dragster or Funny Car.
Although a typical Top Fuel or Funny Car drag race lasts just four seconds, the fuel pump demonstrated here has the capacity to pump an unbelievable 64 gallons per minute. The latest model Waterman pumps used today move even more fuel than this one!
If your family car gets 22 miles per gallon, how far can you go on the 64 gallons that the pump moves in just one minute?"

EPA doesn't care about this as its not a petroleum based fuel and the byproducts of combustion are not the same. Even if it was, they dont care about legal racing. They only care about people trying to take those cars and driving them daily.

It limits rac8ng development and racing is used to test for manufacturers. So they now have to develop crap that can be adapted in some way to road cars. I hate it. Why can't racing just be racing?😢

The ratio of nitromethane to air is so high, that just before ignition the nitro becomes so compressed and homogenous that for a split second it becomes a freaking *solid.*

Basically a nitromethane toilet flushing. So that's what, 80 gallons per mile? My wife and I went to the Winter Nationals in Pomona in 2004. I wore earplugs. She thought I was being silly.... She discovered that it was like listening to a 5 second gunshot. In this video even the pump sound hurt my ears and I had to turn it down.

How they get half decent stoichiometric combustion in the fuel / air ratio needed, just like mama bear (not too hot, destroys motor components & not too cold, doesn’t get the max out of the run) is mind boggling.

That’s why they use nitromethane for fuel. Since it’s so much more oxidized than gasoline, they can run these engines with a much lower air:fuel ratio. I think it’s usually like 1.7:1.

I think its 7x as rich as a gas engine a/f ratio iirc. Top fuel is right on the edge of hydrolocking just from the fuel. As a matter of fact, if ignition is cut and fuel isnt during a pass, within a few rotations they will hydro lock and bend a rod or explode, hence why not losing ignition is so important in nitro engines (among losing the race). They run dual distributors/wires/plugs per cylinder for this reason (and more complete combustion). 44 amps each x 2. You could easily do some arc welding with how much power the ignition uses. The engineering that goes into every aspect of these cars is insane, this is what you get when you push every aspect to the absolute limit.
