After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Not quite on the same level but John Denver flew his own Lear Jet, Christian Eagle aerobatic plane and his own bi-plane and piloted and did rolls in an F 15 fighter jet (for his TV special The Higher We Fly, on utube) and completed and passed NASA'S Astronaut training.

Harrison Ford also flies his own aircraft. A DHC-2 Beaver. He also has other aircraft iicluding a Ryan PT-16 and a helicopter though I'm not sure what type.

Wasn't that good an aircraft with the original Allison engine untill they fitted the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, or to be more correct the Packard Merlin built under licence. Still a bril bit of kit!.

@@freddarau The P-47 was powered by a Prat & Whitney 2800 radial. The P-51A was powered by the Allison V-1710. The P-51B and C (Mustang Mk III for you Brits) got the Merlin 61 and the Legend began. Starting with the D model, the P-51 got the Packard V-1650, a licensed-built version of the Merlin 66.

The P-51 is the bigger impact on WW2 and so of much bigger military importance. The Corsair remains the most impressive American plane for so many reasons and would have been a better fit obviously since it's the navy fighter... BUT it was the P-51 that defeated Hitler... so it gets the nod here.

2:22 How can you be a 3 star admiral if you're prior enlisted swine? And a Bronze Star and Purple Heart but no Combat Action Ribbon? I call B.S. on the military advisor for the movie. There is more, but this one is egregious. The Bronze Star Medal may be awarded by the Secretary of a military department or the Secretary of Homeland Security with regard to the Coast Guard when not operating as a service in the Department of the Navy, or by such military commanders, or other appropriate officers as the Secretary concerned may designate, to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, or Coast Guard of the United States, after 6 December 1941, distinguishes, or has distinguished, herself or himself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, *not involving participation in aerial flight*- (a) while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; (b) while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or (c) while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. The acts of heroism are of a lesser degree than required for the award of the Silver Star. The acts of merit or acts of valor must be less than that required for the Legion of Merit but must nevertheless have been meritorious and accomplished with distinction. The Bronze Star Medal (without the "V" device) may be awarded to each member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, after 6 December 1941, was cited in orders or awarded a certificate for exemplary conduct in ground combat against an armed enemy between 7 December 1941 and 2 September 1945. For this purpose, the US Army's Combat Infantryman Badge or Combat Medical Badge award is considered as a citation in orders. Documents executed since 4 August 1944 in connection with recommendations for the award of decorations of higher degree than the Bronze Star Medal cannot be used as the basis for an award under this paragraph.

So a couple things: 1. Enlisted Personnel are eligible to become commissioned officers with recommendation/approval of their command and assuming they fulfill the other requirements (Bachelor's Degree etc) to attend OCS. Assuming that he became an officer pretty early on (which would make sense, Naval aviators are required to be commissioned officers and he seems to have been flying for a while), he could have worked his way to a 1 Star Admiral. A 3 star Admiral is a temporary rank given only when the officers appointment requires the rank. These appointments are made by the President. In order to be eligible for a 3 star appointment you must be at a minimum a 1 star admiral. Cyclone's (that's the call sign of that admiral) current appointment appears to be overseeing all of Top Gun though the movie doesn't really make it clear what his appointment is, it would make sense for him to be a 3 star in that context. 2. He has a Bronze Star WITHOUT the Combat V device the Navy uses to denote combat heroism meaning that his Bronze Star is a non-combat Bronze Star. Therefore he would not have a Combat Action Ribbon nor be eligible for one. There's been several non-combat personnel who have received Bronze Stars for non-combat service. The only requirement (assuming it was awarded after 2001) would be that he would be inside of a combat zone but not necessarily directly involved in combat. Prior to 2001 he could've been awarded it even if he was stateside (The USAF did this during Kosovo in 1999 and the Pentagon found that some recipients were still stateside, which prompted the change of the medal to require a recipient to be deployed in a combat zone in 2001). As far as his Purple Heart, he could've received that after getting shot down (and sustaining injury) by a SAM or getting injured in a dogfight from shrapnel without actually being shot down or hell even some enemy Flak shrapnel or infantry machine gun fire.

There have been several awards of the Bronze star which were not 'in combat'. The majority in rescue work, and those deployed in a rear echelon post. Lt. Kristen Trindle being one of the latest recipients.

1 : the Mustang is on screen for less than a quarter of this clip ; a more accurate title would be F/A-18E/F Super Hornet . 2 : As built it is a P-51K .
