I have said this many times, but Lorne Michaels has his favorites, and usually the majority of the sketches are given to the people he feels are the most promotable. You see it with Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Will Farrell, Kirsten Wiig, etc. I feel the same as you do, Bill Hader was very underrated and underused.

The writers also have to be on board for it. If they couldn't fit in Harvey Fierstein into a really good sketch/bit, because he is pretty Niche, they wouldn't Using niche characters often only happens when the actor can do the character PERFECTLY like Bill Hader's Alan Alda. His Fierstein was good, but not perfect enough or well known enough in the general public to get a lot of screen time.
