For comparison a roller coaster is somewhere between 4 and 5G with anything higher probably requiring a pilot G-suit to prevent you going unconscious on the trip. Pilots train in G-chambers (cyclotrons or whatever they're called) and lots of pilots fail in that step alone, even if they are perfect in everything else. The g-suit inflates as you reach higher g-forces, to some extent squeezing your body, lungs, etc. to ensure your brain still receives oxygen and prevents greyouts (too little O2 while climbing) but can't do much about redouts (too much O2 while diving). She told me later that she knew her dad had to board his Apache many times with the thought he might not come home. Michelle: "It's a privilege to fly with Maverick." Ellie: "Tell that to his dad..." Legit spat tea & choked at that one...🤣😂😅👍 Re Mav's F-18 being unable to fly again after his 'demo', pulling Gs damages the structure of aircraft. Too many Gs will break the airframe immediately, but even pulling less than that limit will still do damage: microscopic cracks that build up over time, invisibly weaking the airframe until it breaks, sometimes during normal non-extreme flying. To combat this, all aircraft have a rated 'G-life', that is the maximum cumulative number of Gs they can pull in their lives before they're retired as a precautionary measure. Mav's extreme maneuvers during the demo may not have broken his F-18 immediately, but they may have used up so much of it's G-life that it's effectively scrap anyway.
@Mwoods22722 жыл бұрын
That means all the other aircraft would have ended up broken if they had succeeded in their practice run. They wouldn't have one scrap plane but 8 planes scrapped even before the mission.

@@Mwoods2272 correct, but that's why John Hamm's character (forgot his name) told them to slow down and take the shot from higher when he took over. Maverick was training them in the only way where they could realistically make it home as opposed to caring about the aircraft. It's true that 8 aircraft would've been scrapped but they would've still had pilots that were trained and ready for a critically important mission, which takes priority. The issue wasn't so much the damage done as opposed to the fact that Maverick pretty much stole the aircraft - and in doing so put it under those G loads and cost the plane it's structural integrity.

Very happy to see you ladies react to this one. For me it was absolutely breath taking. The term wash out means kicked out of the unit or thrown out all together. The F14 Tomcat from the first movie was retired by the Navy because of the issues it had stalling out or jet wash. Plus it didn't really have good mobility and the accident that killed Goose based on a real life tragedy. The FA 18 which we saw in this move were the replacement. I know they did use an actual F14 Tomcat in the end. I don't know if Tom Cruise was allowed to actually fly it. The actor who played Goose's son was a perfect image of Anthony Edward's. His wife after the movie made him shave the mustache.
@Caseytify2 жыл бұрын
The F-14A had the engines liable to compressor stall. Later B & D versions had different engines, and were much more capable planes. They also addressed the canopy issue. A former naval aviator did a very good KZbin video on the real world issues with early Tomcat ejections. An F-14 stunt pilot was killed in that very manner during filming of the first movie. No, Cruise never flew an F-14 or F-18.
@drewmp052 жыл бұрын
@@Caseytify mostly correct, except that Art Scholl, the stunt pilot who died filming the flat spin for the first movie, was never an F-14 pilot.
@Pupda2 жыл бұрын
Some misses... The F-14 was not retired because of issues with jet wash. As Caseytify posted the first F-14s (F-14A) had issues with compressor stalls in their TF-30 engines that had nothing directly to do with jet wash (although that could also trigger compressor stalls), but rather due to disrupted airflow at the engine inlet at high angles-of-attack and/or abrupt throttle movement, both things that are common in fighter jet operations. While the TF-30 was successfully used in other military aircraft, it was only intended as an interim engine for the Tomcat (a legacy of the TFX program that led to the F-111). When replaced by the F-110 engine the compressor stall problem disappeared and was not an issue at the time the F-14 was retired. Only about a quarter of the F-14 losses were due to engine failures, though that was still way too many. The F-14 also had great maneuverability - in some parts of its flight envelope it was superior to the other "teen" fighters even though it had a lower G-limit. There is an excellent video by Grumman engineer Mike Ciminera on KZbin discussing some of the engineering decisions (obviously at an unclassified level) that gave it exceptional maneuverability. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaS4dJyudsqNZqM The F-14 was retired because it was becoming difficult and prohibitively expensive to maintain - at the end of its service life it took approximately 30 man-hours of maintenance for every hour the aircraft flew. As well, the older airframes were approaching the end of their service life, and Grumman no longer had the tooling to produce new-build F-14s. Next, they did not use an actual F-14 in TG:M; there are no flyable F-14s in the western world and only a handful in Iran. A museum F-14 (San Diego Air & Space Museum) was used for some ground shots, but all remaining F-14s are either in museums or were destroyed (other than ten in storage at AMARC) in order to keep unique parts from reaching Iran through the black market to help them keep their Tomcats flying. Most significantly most if not all museum F-14s had their backs "broken" - specifically they cut the titanium wing box apart (the center of the airframe where the wings join the fuselage); this part was produced in a unique vacuum welding facility (see the video above) and is irreplaceable. Other clues that the F-14 in the movie was not real include the lack of a nose tow (also known as a launch bar) on the nose gear strut and the lack of a tailhook - every F-14 including those of the IIAF have a tailhook (even though the Iranian F-14s were never intended to be operated from an aircraft carrier) as does every recent American fighter - F-15s, F-18s of course, F-22s and F-35s all have tailhooks. The nose tow may have been removed by CGI (the museum F-14 used on TG:M like all remaining F-14s had no engines and was towed out of the hangar by a tractor, which was removed by CGI) but there is no reason that the tailhook would be missing off a real F-14. (The hook was removed in order to have an excuse for making a barricade landing. (By the way if you look at some of the aerial carrier shots - specifically the first one when they go aboard for the mission, you'll see the barricade arms are raised, which almost never happens). The barricade landing was obviously CGI, since again there are no flyable F-14s, but even if there was a flyable Tomcat they would not have intentionally done a barricade landing. The movie The Final Countdown (1980) includes an actual barricade landing by an A-7; the film crew just happened to be there and recorded it; later they re-filmed the rigging of the barricade). Also on KZbin is a clip of "Bug" Roach waving a barricade landing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoO4g3Vte8mmf6s) Also the lights on the tail fins are wrong - the white taillight (also known as a position light or a navigation light) should be steady while the red anti-collision light would be the one flashing (actually on the Tomcat, rotating; the flash effect was mechanical while on the F-18 it's a red strobe). As well, there should be another red anti-collision light on the front corner of the left vertical stabilizer that would also flash - in the movie it's steady. The is CGI (Fun fact: The F-14 got 360-degree coverage by having one light on the front of the left fin and the other on the back of the right fin: the F-18 put a light on the outside of each vertical stabilizer). For Caseytify - when mentioning another KZbin channel it's always nice to actually link it. I'm assuming you're referring to Ward Carrol's channel (kzbin.info). By the way, Ward was a Naval Flight Officer, specifically a Radar Intercept Officer or RIO; only Pilots are Naval Aviators. Trivial, but.... And Art Scholl didn't die in an F-14 - he was out spinning over the Pacific filming cockpit views in his Pitts S-2 that would have been used as cockpit views or projected as background for the flat spin scene when he failed to recover from a spin (which unlike an F-14 is non-event in aerobatic plane such as his) for reasons that still are unknown.

@@dariusparks3954 Elaborate by snubbed? If you mean with an Oscar nomination then I am sorry but you’re crazy. In Magnolia he deserve it and that’s why he got nominated but not in here. It wasn’t a bad performance, but it isn’t an Oscar worthy performance. Not even top three of his performances.

Pretty sure the diner scene after Maverick crashes the Darkstar is based on a real event where a test pilot crashed a plane and walked into a nearby diner. Can't recall when it was, but it was a few decades back I think.

A similar breakup happened in an early SR-71 test flight. Pilot survived but the backseater was killed, broke his neck as the plane disintegrated around them if I remember right.

The Mach number is a measure of how close you are from the speed of sound. So, a Mach 10 is ten times the speed of sound. The woman on the right is highly emotional. And although my essense does not allow me to be emotional, I can sense it, and empathize with her. This movie is in perfect harmony with what real cinema is supposed to be. No CGI and green screens, marvelous shots, spectacular aerial sensation with real flight scenes, well developed characters, spot-on colour palette, and amazing commitment from Tom Cruise. Best movie of the year by now.

Fun Fact: Tom cruise was the only person from the whole cast who actually got to fly a real F18 Super Hornet by himself. He had intensiv training before and he had to promise the navy he wouldn't do risky maneuvers and not to scrap it. The scene where he was launched from the USS Abraham Lincoln was actually real but he had to land on a nearby airfield due to the fact only very skilled pilots get to land on an aircraft carrier and he just wasn't skilled enough. An actually Navy pilot had to bring it back to the carrier over and over!

It's standard procedure to climb during an engine failure, that way you gain as much altitude as possible and increase the distance you're able to glide back to a runway if the plane can be controlled.

Loved this reaction, dear Ellie and Mich!! It was very funny how you guys were calling some of the stuff that was going to happen, like Maverick over pushing at the beginning, the front landing gear getting clipped, and others. You could feel Ellie’s tension at the mission, particularly in the Coffin. You two almost dropped your eyeballs when the explosion happened. I could see how Mich was fighting tears and Ellie was in the emotional roller coaster, like when you get the flashback scene of the Goose accident, the Coyote and Phoenix training, or when the last fighter was about to shoot them down. Hehe! Loved it! Big kiss, Mich and Ellie! 💋💋😘😘

This movie apparently pretends that "Charlie", Maverick's love interest in the first movie, never existed. Instead the filmmakers took a name mentioned in the first movie, Penny Benjamin, and made her into a character in this movie, Maverick's "new-old" love interest. I don't like saying this, but I think they looked up the actress who played Charlie and found that she looks like Tom Cruise's grandma now, so they decided to simply replace the character.

Phoenix climbed when she had the bird-strike emergency because during any emergency altitude is your friend. The farther away you are from the ground, the farther away you are from hitting the ground. Greater altitude gives you more time and safety, including more time for your parachute to open and slow your fall, in case you have to eject. Phoenix definitely did the right thing very quickly. Like all of them, she is well trained.

I read that Val Kilmer's kids were there seeing their dad doing the scene with his close friend, Tom Cruise. There were no dry eyes prior, during and after the scene. I am curious if the actor, Anthony Edwards who portrayed Maverick's co-aviator, "Goose" was there too. Because all of them, Tom, Val, and Anthony were very young in Top Gun.

But it's not about being "old enough", it's about setting a good example for your kid. And as someone who was 'caught' by my GF's kid, I can assure you ... I've *never* been so embarrassed in my life! I think I spent 5 minutes straight apologizing to my GF! Although we did laugh about it later. It was both wonderful and sad that Val Kilmer had throat cancer for real ... but still did an amazing job reprising his character! 🙁 👏

I just wanted to say that the scene where Coyote passed out is very real. When I went into the Navy, and talked to my recruiter about possibly flying an F-14 Tomcat back in 2000, one of things we talked about is what pilots call "G-loc." What it refers to is the idea that your body is under so much gravitational force that you pass out. You can also suffer from G-loc if you have bad teeth. The reason is, under high stress such as pilots go through, bad teeth can actually cause a person to pass out, by causing so much pain in the mouth that it overloads even the autonomic nervous system. It is a tremendous safety risk, to both the pilot and the aircraft, to let people who aren't in perfect peak physical health fly an aircraft. Edit: By the way, ladies, first, the F-14 technically could be considered a museum piece, since the Tomcat has since been retired. However, what you're missing is that the F-14 Tomcat is what Maverick flew in the original Top Gun movie in 1986. Edit: Fun fact, ladies! The prop plane is a P-51 Mustang from World War II that Tom Cruise owns -- and not only does he own it, he's an accomplished pilot in his own right.

Speed doesn't feel like anything--only acceleration, which includes turning, can be felt. The Earth is traveling in its orbit around the Sun at about 67000 miles per hour, and we're on it, but we can't feel the speed at all. This is 10 times faster than Maverick was flying in the DarkStar prototype, or about Mach 100. The main difference is that Maverick's plane had to go through the air, while the Earth travels in a near-perfect vacuum, and that air is going to heat the plane's skin up a lot.
