As I saw someone else say: "This movie has no business being this good"! It's so true, every scene is either perfect or as close to perfect as is possible. There are so many film trope traps it could have fallen into just to get an extra laugh or create additional drama, bot somehow this film knows that it does not need it, it's has enough on its own. There are particularly two things I keep thinking of: 1. When he jumps out the window after the night at Penny's, and Amelia sees him, it a less self aware movie would have gone for an easy joke. Instead she says "just don't break her heart again" and it hit's so much harder in the feels than any joke could have ever done. 2. Before he leaves for the mission he goes to talk to Penny. Any other movie would hav had him not telling her anything to not worry her, and then it would create extra drama because she would be angry that he "just left again". Instead he actually tells her what is happening and why he leaves and what he means (although we don't see/hear the exact words, the whole emotion of that scene makes it clear to me that it is what he does) which makes it so much more mature, and to be honest, real. Also, I'm not sure if you actually mentioned it, I might have missed it, but the illness and reason for Iceman not speaking, is that Val Kilmer had throat cancer in real life and lost most if not all of his voice. So the portrayed illness of Iceman is the exact same as of the real life Val Kilmer.

Actually, the Darkstar was designed and built by Lockheed. Though CGI was used for the flying sequences. But, Lockheed did build a physical model as if they were actually going to make it do mach 10. As such, it's design is similar ot the actual SR-72 prototype (which people are now calling Darkstar), to the point where China diverted a spy satellite to get images of it. The actual SR-72 is a drone, so will not qualify for the SR-71's records.

The first movie was a Navy recruiter film, lots of Hollywood but this film had lots of actual Navy consultants, keeping it real. Tom also wanted it as real as possible, so little CGI was used. I remember when my squadron was deployed and they (Hollywood) sent the Top Gun movie out to the fleet to watch. I had been flying the F14B for a few years and while sitting there with the rest and Maverick has a Mig on his six, he says "I'll hit the brakes and he'll fly right by", had us all laughing and a A6 pilot leans up and asked if my Tomcat can really do that. I laughed as I told him no, at that speed, deploying the speed brake would rip it clean off. This had a lot of Navy, real Navy involved in making sure it was as close to real as possible. The next one is supposed to also have the Navy's support, we'll have to hope that Tom can stay young enough to be in the plane.

The F18 has a single seat and 2 seat version. They set up cameras in the two seat versions and navy pilots flew while the actors in the back seat acted as if they were actually flying. The plane that Tom Cruise flys at the end is P51 Mustang, a WW2 fighter. He is an accomplished pilot but to fly an F18 takes a lot of training and he would never had been allowed to learn to fly those.

This is one of very favorite movies. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s so Top Gun was a big deal for me growing up. Top Gun Maverick is a sequel that raised the bar so much. The threading of the storylines was so, so intricate and good. The film work and realism so good. The soundtrack, so good. The acting, so good. Etc. Etc. I watch a lot of reaction channels and your reaction to this film is a favorite now for me. You really got into the emotions and were invested in what happened. That is rare for younger reactors that didn't have the impact of the original in their youth and then waited 30 years for the nostalgic effect of this movie. I also loved how you really didn't know what was coming which makes it a true first-time reaction which made all the difference. You also did a great job with the YT edit. That can be an area reactors mess up by chopping things up so much that the movie doesn't flow and, even though everyone watching will have already watched the original, it helps to "watch with you" by having a well-edited "reaction movie" that allows us to go along on the ride with you. You kept the important pieces in which made it a truly enjoyable (and emotional all over again) for me to watch along with you guys. Thank you for being so genuine and showing such authentic reactions. You did a really great job.

That is such a great comment. Thank you it means a lot. I love movies and when everything clicks like it did here (absolutely brilliant movie) it’s just too easy to get wrapped up in it. Thank you again. Comments like this help my long editing sessions worth it! 😃

I was grounded as a teen so missed the first Top Gun when it came out in the theatres. As a military brat, it’s been one of my favorite movies over the last 30 years. I was nervous about a sequel. But, I ended up seeing TGM many times in the theater - partially to make up for my sad teen years, but also because it was an amazing film. I truly enjoyed watching this reaction video with you. 💜

at 51:17 when he tries to pull the ejection handles and the seats don't work is not a plot device for suspense. I trained on Martin baker seats back in 1974 to fly in an OV-1 Mohawk ( 2 seat,Twin engine Recon with photo and Radar) . Preflight had to remove many safety pins to arm the seat. When they got in the F-14, they didn't remove the safeties.

In the first Top Gun, the Fighter Weapons School was based at Naval Air Station Miramar near San Diego, CA. Later on it was moved to NAS Fallon in the Nevada desert. In this Film TOPGUN is based at North Island, CA which is the base for the C-2 Greyhound, the "Delivery Truck" for the US Navy. C-2's bring men and supplies out to the Carrier when it's at Sea.

This was awesome to watch in the cinema… I’ve not had that visceral a reaction in the cinema in years. And that opening shot with the stealth going over the top of the admiral & the roof lifting - that was real. One shot.

I believe the black jet at the beginning to be a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird (now obsolete), one of the favorites of all time. The fly over the admiral and the corresponding roof lifting off is 100% real. That just one of the amazing things about this movie. All actors were in the aircraft but sat in the rear seats behind the navy's pilots. Cameras were mounted on the back of the pilots seat. Can't fake those facial expressions with the g-forces and the looks in their eyes. Not much CGI at all, mostly in the battles sequences.

Fun fact: On the experimental jet everyone misses the Skunk Works logo on the tail of the plane and on the stick. Skunk Works is an official pseudonym for Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs, formerly called Lockheed Advanced Development Projects. It is responsible for a number of aircraft designs, highly classified research and development programs.

For most of these shots, Tom Cruise is indeed in the aircraft--but in the back seat of the F/A-18E Super Hornet. The Navy stipulated that they could use operational aircraft for the movie as long as they were being flown by Navy pilots--but would never allow Cruise himself to fly them.

3:22 Mach is a speed measuring system. Mach 1 is the speed of sound, at 1235 kmh (767 mph) Mach 10 is what the SR-72 Darkstar (the plane in the intro) can reach, which is 12350 kmh (7672 mph). While Mach 1 is supersonic speeds, Mach 10 is considered Hypersonic. Your typical airliner cruises at Mach 0.86 which is 1062 kmh (660 mph), can cross the atlantic in about 9-12 hours depending on what for type jet it is. Concorde (supersonic airliner and my fav passenger jet) flies at Mach 2 which is 2470 kmh or 1535 mph and can cross the atlantic in less than 3 hours.

My wife and I saw this movie on opening night shortly after we moved to our new hometown of Colorado Springs. Unbeknown to us, as it happened, the theater is across the street from the US Air Force Academy. Also, as it happened, it was graduation day. As we were driving to the theater, the USAF Thunderbirds were doing a flyby for the graduation ceremony. The theater itself was full of cadets, some of whom just graduated, in their ceremonial uniform. During the movie, we could overhear their hushed conversations evaluating the technical details. Couldn't think of a more dramatic way to experience this movie!

Miles Teller actually played the piano in the bar. He was admittedly rusty, but he practiced enough to play the song proficiently for that scene.
