The actors flew in the back seats of FA/18-F fighter jets for airborne scenes. As a result, they really experienced the G-forces, which can be noticed as their faces noticeably sag under those conditions. Also, there are two main F/A-18 variants in service today: the F/A-18E and the F/A-18F. They're basically the same thing, except that the E (Echo) variant is single seater and the F (Foxtrot) variant is double seater - the person in the back seat isn't a pilot, but rather operates specialized weapons systems while the pilot flies. In this case, they were flown in pairs of one E and one F, with the F backseater using the laser weapon guidance system and setting the target for the E, which actually fires the missile. Also, at 28:15, Rooster calls the F-14 a museum piece. He's not technically wrong, as the plane they were in was actually a non-airworthy museum piece. There are no airworthy F-14s left in the United States - the only country that is still actively using F-14s is Iran, who got them right before the 1979 revolution (back when they were still friends with the U.S.) and has since had to maintain and upgrade them themselves.

If you make any kind of mistake, expect a call sign based on it. One guy I knew passed out drunk on railroad tracks. So Trax is the name they pinned on him. To answer you questions about birds affecting a plane, yes they do, especially when they fly in a flock. Birds can damage the aircraft from the body, cracking windows, and even making engines fail completely if too much are ingested. Take a look at Miracle on the Hudson where Captain Sully, a real life accident and they even made a movie about it, ingested birds on both engines on takeoff from LaGuardia airport, it caused both engines to fail and they were forced to do a water ditching on the Hudson in the middle of winter. Luckily everybody survived it.

Funny true story from back in the day relayed to me by a former employee at the base and also appeared in the book “Skunkworks” At Area 51 one of the pilots test flying a plane had an engine failure and ditched the plane and ejected. He was in the middle of the desert and had to walk onto the closest town (Rachel) and use the pay phone to call a the base to come get him. This was back in the 60s/70s I think the first scene at the diner is a tip of the hat to that story.

Some crazy theories: (These are all my own theories, I haven't seen any of them elsewhere). Crazy theory #1: The scene where Maverick asks for water after bailing from an experimental aircraft is based on a real incident with Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier ("fastest man alive") where he bailed out of a malfunctioning high-speed test aircraft (after regaining just enough control to stabilize it's spin and slow it down to ejection-appropriate speed) and was given water by a local rancher before being rescued by helicopters. Crazier theory #2: If you look at the map on the big mission control screen as the test flight progresses, when Hondo says "He is the fastest man alive", in as much as you can proximate a location, Maverick is overflying the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs (my home town). The "fastest man alive" honor is normally gained by Air Force pilots, but Maverick is Navy -- making this potentially a hidden inter-services rivalry reference. (Not only a Navy pilot becomes the fastest man alive, but he is doing it right above the USAFA). Craziest theory #3: This one is really out there. Maybe I've watched too much Sixth Sense and Battlestar Galactics. When Admiral Kane mentions Maverick's "Guardian Angel", we all (subsequently) assume he means Iceman. But what if there is an actual angel, visible only to Maverick and the audience, who guides him through difficult situations? (maybe it's the spirit of Goose). Maverick may not be aware that the angel is only visible to him, but we, the audience, could note that no one ever speaks to the angel, no one beside Maverick ever hears the angel (even if the angel appears, to Maverick, to be speaking to others), and no one ever acknowledges the presence of the angel. The Warlock character appears to match this description! (I know, I know, if you look through every scene, there are occasional modest violations of these parameters; but these violation could be creatively re-interpreted as if they are all in Maverick mind). And a small non-crazy note: The surface-to-air missiles shown are never identified, so they could be just fictional, but they look very much like SA-3 GOA, which I studied in the 1980s (they were already old news at the time, but are still used today). The SA-3s do not use heat-seeking guidance (they use radioed-in guidance from the base radars), so flares would be useless against them (but electronic counter-measures, which every F-18 will have on board, will render the GOA's nearly useless). Another small note: When Rooster asks Maverick if the F-14 can outrun the 5th Gen fighter (which is also never identified, but looks like Su-57), the question is not as dumb as it sounds. F-14s are, in fact, faster than Su-57. The F-14 were built at a time when speed was thought to be the most important parameter for a dog-fighter; for 5th gen fighters, maneuverability is considered a higher priority, so they optimized accordingly. Maverick correctly answers "not their missiles and guns". Dan.

Answer: Yes birds hitting a plane going 500mph or more can do some very serious damage. Like whats shown in the movie, if they hit directly in the "air intakes" they can bend or entirely break off fan blades in the engines turbo fan. But that doesnt stop the engine suction power, so the bird and the steel blade get sucked through a engine spinning at thousands of RPM's.....this breaks other things that eventually lead to the engine schredding itself apart. All of this happens in a couple of seconds. If you watch the movie "Sully", its about the Hudson River crash landing in the 2000's. Same deal, bird strike took out the engines on a commercial flight.....and about what happened after.

A film about pilots being trained for an impossible mission,where they have to fly down a narrow channel, hit a tiny vent, one pilot asks for guidance from a dead person, goes in without computer guidance, relies on his 'sense' to hit the target, sounds familiar ;-) This is a great film, hits all the nostalgia points while introducing enough new elements to avoid being a carbon copy, really enjoyed it.

The sentimentality is because Maverick changed from just instructor to going on the mission. Any time one goes into combat, it could mean they're not coming home, especially a mission as dangerous as this. So they needed to make sure they didn't leave anything unsaid. Except between Maverick and Rooster. Maverick needed to give Rooster hope that he believed they'd both come back to have their talk.

Great reaction and such a great movie! As far as the death of the skunkworks plane in the opening sequence, from what I remember a friend of mine's dad telling me years ago (and he was an aerospace engineer who had worked on high speed test flight programs for a couple of decades or so) a lot of the more advanced high speed test planes under development at the time were being designed with what he called a canister ejection system, where the plan was the sealed cockpit would be jettisoned by the ejection system with the pilot inside and a series of high tensile parachutes would deploy one at a time and slow the canister down before being torn away until it had slowed enough that the pilot would be ejected from the canister and parachute to earth as normal. I suppose that this futuristic plane would be equipped with a similar sort of system. The amusing thing for me that almost no one seems to get is that Hangman is 100% Maverick as he would have been if he had been flying one of the typical single-seat fighters instead of the two-seat F-14s used in the original Top Gun. The main thing that kept Maverick from being what Hangman was is that Mav always had Goose, who was his conscience in some ways, riding brakes on Mav's worst impulses and making them not so bad. Mav was responsible to and for Goose, and since Goose was his only family Mav usually held himself in check so he wouldn't let Goose down. Hangman didn't have a back seater to be responsible to and for, so he could go all out to prove he was the best he could be and better than everyone else, which justly earned him his callsign: because he'd always hang you out to dry to prove you weren't as good as he was. Luckily, and thankfully, Hangman learned the important lesson about teamwork through Mav, who uniquely understood Hangman's driven personality. Hangman's character development was a very well done part of the movie too. In an early script, Hangman was to be Ice's son. I'm glad they scrapped that. In the F-18 scenes, professional military pilots were doing the actual flying, but the back seat cockpits were set up to look like the real thing. The tech advances for getting us inside the cockpit with the actor were amazing! And the actors had additional duties to their usual acting as they had to test and make sure the cameras were set and focused properly, that their makeup was good, and that the shots were as near perfect as possible. The director had the toughest time since all he could do was stand around and wait until the day's flying was done, then collect all the day's filming out of the onboard camera systems and take it to watch for the first time then and make notes for the next day's flying. The actors actually had to go through an intensive training program to prepare them for flying in the fighters. I imagine there was some vomit hosed out of the cockpit after some of those maneuvers. Even though the actors, from what I remember, were never taken above 4G, that's nothing to sneeze at. Especially over time. I know the Fury 325 roller coaster at Carowinds near where I grew up in Charlotte, NC is said to max out at around 4Gs, that's just for a short period of time. It's cool to see Bob in an F-18, since we saw the actor's, Lewis Pullman's, real life dad Bill Pullman in a movie where he was a former F-18 pilot who gets back in the cockpit again. The WWII plane Cruise was working on at the beginning and flying at the end of the movie is his own personal plane that he is licensed to fly. He took members of the cast and crew up in it for fun in between work. That had to be a blast. Val Kilmer, of course, had been fighting throat cancer in real life, but it was important to have him in this movie and he wanted to be there. His voice in the scenes was a programmed synthesized voice, but it was perfectly his voice as it might be. It was so good to see them as such close friends, and to know that Ice had constantly been Mav's guardian angel, keeping him in the service no matter what Mav did to get himself dismissed. And it showed a lot of how well Ice really understood Mav, and explains a lot of Mav's behaviors in the early movie. Mav is basically suicidally depressed when the movie starts, but he's not the suicidal type, so he looks for situations where he can go out doing what he does best, but he fights to survive anyway because that is his nature. Ignoring how he feels (typical man, I know) he focuses on something else that he can control: flying. All Mav has is the service. He has no family. Even Goose's family he's not close to, though we only learn why as the movie advances. The Navy and the people he works with, best shown in Hondo, are the only family he has. So he pushes beyond Mach 10 because the project is going to be shut down and he'll lose the team/family he's been working with and, knowing as he does that Ice has been fighting cancer, he is aware that his long-term guardian angel might not be able to keep him where he needs to be. His time is running out, and he's well aware of that, so if he stays in pure Maverick mode and pushes juuust a bit more, and a bit more again, then maybe he can go out doing what he loves before that is taken away from him too. So he does. But he survives. And his guardian angel is still able to shift him back to someplace he needs to be. And, whether this was Ice's grand plan knowing who all from Pete's history was there or not, Mav ends up where he needs to be to reestablish a will to live beyond the military. Reestablishment of his old family with Rooster. Rediscovery and, much more importantly, a new appreciation of an old flame (mentioned but never seen in the original movie). And suddenly Mav has every reason to not die in the cockpit. So, of course, he must go and do something that could very easily make him die in the cockpit. In a Hollyweird full of shallow and dull movies and shows with shallow, poorly done scripts and no actual thought behind them and shallow, unrealistic characters who only change in shallow ways if at all, a movie of this great depth made me so happy to see. I can watch it again and again and love it still. So very well done. For all the concerns I've had for Tom Cruise's weirdnesses in the past, he is absolutely a glorious hero for making this movie happen.

She was mentioned in passing a couple of times as "The Admiral's Daughter" that Maverick got in trouble with ... for taking her up in a jet ... and yes, she was a previous on again/off again girlfriend. I'm really glad they brought her back. Kelly McGillis (Charlie) is not looking that great these days and I'm sure she was either not considered for a comeback or she bowed out due to that (too embarrassed, considering how great Tom Cruise looks ... just too much time/water under that bridge). Lewis Pullman (i.e. Bob) is the son of Bill Pullman (Independence Day films, Spaceballs, Equalizer films, Wyatt Earp, While You Were Sleeping, Sleepless In Seattle, Ruthless People were his most famous films).

They don't specify the country they are going into in the movie, but only one foreign country ever bought F-14s. That was Iran under the Shah, before the revolution that put the current government in place. It is also the only country that still has any of them operational after nearly fifty years. Fighter pilot call signs are generally assigned by fellow pilots at your first operational squadron, you take the name they give you. It only gets changed in extraordinary circumstances.

As others have said a lot of the I'm fighter scenes were real. Also real was the scene there the fighter flies over Ed Harris. They used a f18 but digitally changed it afterwards. The roof coming off the security shack was absolutely real.

Hi Camilla. So, I wanted to answer a question you had during your reaction. Yes, birds can affect jet engines like that. It happens fairly often in commercial aviation but most planes can land with one engine. It’s very rare that both engines are hit. The most famous incident where both engines were knocked out was the miracle on the Hudson.

Ed Harris (Admiral Cain) and Glen Powell (Hangman) both played Mercury astronaut (and Marine Corps fighter pilot) John Glenn in the movies The Right Stuff and Hidden Figures. It’s kind of ironic that Harris’s would play a. character who is such an advocate of unmanned planes. In the tv series Westworld he plays a billionaire who funds an amusement park for 1% were all of the non guests are androids. Great show if you want to react to it.

You've had a lot of heavy serious and emotional movies you should mix it up and watch a comedy. I recommend Hot Shots that largely parodies Top Gun. It also borrows some from Rambo so you could watch that first but it's not necessary.

I was worried when it was announced there would be a sequel to Top Gun. Sequels to such iconic films usually go badly. This one went well and answered some questions like - what happened to Goose's kid? and, how did Maverick and Iceman get along over the years? Of course, it also raised the question of what happened to Charlie?
@CoffeeMatt10
@CoffeeMatt10 Ай бұрын
Charlie got that job in Washington. Maverick was never going to follow her and settle down with her, he’s a fighter pilot, a “naval aviator”. He’s not happy unless he’s going Mach 2 with his hair on fire. Their respective careers and Maverick’s impulsiveness would’ve hindered their relationship. It is a bit weird given that Top Gun is labelled as an “action romance” movie, and Kelly McGillis got second billing after Tom Cruise, Maverick and Charlie’s romance was a big part of the story, so for it to not even be referenced is a shame. Maybe even if it was during the briefing when Maverick first returns to Top Gun, and Cyclone and Warlock reference the source of intelligence as former Top Gun instructor Charlotte Blackwood. Cyclone could easily have thrown more shade at Maverick by using Charlie’s official reviews of his performances (“we’ve shown this as an example of what NOT to do”), obviously not knowing about their romantic involvement, and that she actually admired Maverick’s ability even if it wasn’t “textbook”.

Call signs are normally not as cool as they seem to be in the movies. Thy are given to you by fellow pilots and it's usually from some of kind of quirk or character trait that may or may not be flattering. But some call signs can become cool by how a good a pilot can be during their careers.

I sort of liked Top Gun, but not much. I didn't care for the love story that was going on. Just seemed a little forced. But I liked the aerial stuff. HOWEVER, I LOVED this movie! One of the best I've ever seen. They had a REAL mission with REAL consequences. And this movie had a MUCH better story line.

28:54 Camilla, I present you...the *Sukhoi SU-57, NATO reporting codename: "Felon".* Aka. the "Fifth Generation Fighter" that's trailing behind Mav' & Rooster. The Sukhoi Su-57 is a real-life fifth-generation fighter jet developed by the Russian manufacturer, Sukhoi OKB. Boasting exception adaptability without sacrificing maneuverability, the aircraft can be fitted with various parts to suit the situation. Short-range air-to-air missiles and long-range large air-to-surface missiles make it ideal for a wide range of missions. Its sophisticated design-the culmination of cutting-edge stealth advancements-represents the peak of fighter technology. Or that's at least what the movie describes it. But in reality, that thing is nothing more than a *"paper tiger" bragging rights machine* with such questionable field-deployment capability, given of what's been happening lately during thee Ukraine War. Formerly known as the *"T-50 PAK-FA"* Prototype, it was Russia's desperate answer trying to outdo the American 5th gen counterparts in the likes of the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II, both made by Lockheed Martin.
