Just like in the first Top Gun when he kisses Charlie. Tom was supposed to say something when Kelly’s character told Maverick she was falling for him. Instead, he just stared at her and then kissed her. The director liked it so much that he kept the scene in.

Whats really interesting about this movie is how much respect it showed the original. Many of the moves Mav does in the dog fight in the f-14 were moves he talked about using with Charlie, the love interest from the first film, that were only theory at the time.
