My late ex-2nd-husband (!) LOVED this movie. He'd served as a USN corpsman on an aircraft carrier. I never watched it all the way through. I like "Hot Shots" better, it has a recipe for Nobby Buns and Brownie Topping in the end credits.

One thing to note: pilots/aviators don't get to pick their own callsigns. Their callsigns are picked for them by their fellow pilots/aviators, and its usually during a special ceremony when they graduate from combat aviation school. If a pilot/aviator does something particularly stupid, dangerous, or embarrassing, they may undergo a "hostile re-name" where their fellow pilots/aviators will give them a new callsign, usually an embarrassing one that refers to the incident which brought about the hostile re-name. For example, let's say a pilot pulls too many Gs during a maneuver and ends up soiling himself, he might be given a hostile re-name from "Maverick" to "Crapper John" or "Hot Seat".

Speaking of first date movies, this one ranks among the most memorable first date movies for me in 1986. I recall 2 first dates for this film at the cinema. The most memorable recollection was listening to the booms emanating from the cinema whilst waiting for the next screening. The dates, not do memorable 😂

I’m old enough to remember Take My Breath Away being in the Top 10 here in the UK. Yet I’ve never seen Top Gun. And I don’t know I ever will. Just . . . has no appeal to me. The Maverick character is one I don’t particularly want to see succeed. However, Top Gun Maverick does appeal to me for some reason 🤔

I've always had one question. Why is the same coffee drinking guy manning the tower on the carrier and at Miramar? Is there a tower controller Top Gun class? This movie is one of series of Tom Cruise films where he plays an asshole, gets a mentor, gets a girlfriend, gets a rival, suffers a tragedy, and gets his mojo and the girl in the end. He also becomes very slightly less of an asshole. See also: Days of Thunder, Cocktail, etc.

This is great, especially in light of JoBlo's new video where he ties himself in knots trying to convince himself that the only people who don't think that this is the Greatest Movie Ever are musty old movie critics. Like you, I didn't sit down and actually watch this until well into adulthood and I remember turning to the person I was sitting with and saying, "This. Is. Terrible!" Sure, it's well shot and edited, but take away thirty five years of nostalgia and it's pure garbage. Oh, and "Take My Goose Away" was the hardest I've laughed all week. Kudos.

Talk about a contrast of characters. We get Kelly McGillis as a hot government consultant in 1986’s Top Gun one year after portraying a shy, closeted Amish widow in 1985’s Witness, plus she got to play opposite Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford. Not bad.

God, I fucking hated this movie. I despise 90% of the characters, the plot is shite, and the flying doesn't even look that good. I feel like I must have opposite tastes from the majority or something, because my favourite 80s jet combat movie is actually The Final Countdown, which is a schlocky time travel story. It's not _amazing,_ but it feels kind of like a Star Trek movie at sea and the aerial photography is absolutely fucking fantastic. The whole carrier is important, from the ship itself to the various kinds of aircraft it operates, and even the munitions loaders get a bit part. Plus, actual 20mm Vulcan sounds.

Awful film! Great footage of some aeroplanes shoehorned into a dull soap opera of a film. The 80's turned out some great films, this wasn't one of them. I can't even say that my opinion was retrospective, because it's what I thought when I first saw it back in the 80's. Cheesy gung ho rubbish!
