TOP LOCAL Hikes in Seward Area - #3 Caines Head State Recreation Area

Caines Head State Recreation (CHSR) Area is accessible from Lowell Point by foot via the Coastal (Intertidal) Trail or by boat. The video and its hikers accessed the CHSR area by water taxi. Hikers going to the area must plan to stay overnight at the CHSR area and hike at 4 foot or lower tides. See more online to hike Coastal Trail route.
CHSR does have two public use cabins that are popular and booked well in advance through www.alaskastateparks.org.
Caines Head, is the scenic site of an abandoned WWII fort, ammunition bunkers, crumbling barracks and two firing platforms. Fort McGilvray, once the strategic command center, is perched on a 650-foot rocky cliff that offers dramatic views of Resurrection Bay. The firing platforms each held 6-inch guns that sat ready to defend the Port of Seward. The fort is open to explore, but take a flashlight to find your way through the maze of underground passages and rooms.
South Beach is a garrison ghost town with remains of the utility buildings and barracks that were home for the 500 soldiers stationed there from July 1941 to May 1943.
CHSR area is filled with history and stunning natural beauty. The weather can be unpredictable and at time severe, but don't be deterred! The video hikers enjoyed their day of exploring even through heavy rain - be prepared!
