Real question is could another VIP be among them along with the frontman. Apparently from what I learned watching another reaction the actor playing player 125 is also the same actor who wore the stag mask in the VIP episode of season 1.

Yes, S1 was as you say more emotional, but that is due to the fact that you did not realise what was happening and were not familiar with the idea of these games. Once you get used to it there is only so much excitement that could be generated by the director, which is why they went in a different direction
