So according to Tristan Hughes of History Hit, the name Maximus Decimus Meridius wouldn’t fly in Rome. Elite Roman names had three parts: Praenomen (first name), Nomen (the Gens or family name) and the Cognomen (surname). The problem here is that Decimus is a Praenomen and both Meridius and Maximus are Cognomens. During the Tigris fight introduction, he’s actually introduced as “Aelius Maximus”, and “Aelius” is a Nomen, so his name should really be Decimus Aelius Meridius Maximus.

I did see an expert say that Maximus Decimus Meridius is not the correct name order, as the typical order is praenomen (first name), nomen (tribe name), and cognomen [family name (ex. Marcus Tullius Cicero = Marcus of the Cicero Family of the Tulli)] and Decimus is a praenomen, while both Maximus and Meridius are cognomen. He's also given an additional name Aelius, meaning he is of the Aelia. Therefore, his full name should be Decimus Aelius Maximus Meridius, which translates to "10th Son of the Aelia, Greatest of the South!"
