Russell Crowe was interviewed back in 2020 for the anniversary of Gladiator. He said that not only did they use live tigers in that one fight scene, Crowe had to do a scene with one. Ridley Scott had him do a scene where a tiger comes up out of the ground and Crowe had to dive roll away from it. Crowe did the scene but said that the tiger's claws came within a few inches of nailing him. He told Scott, "I hope you got that take, because I'm not doing that again."

Possibly one of a few takes but when the film came out they talked about the techniques involved at the time INCLUDING computer manipulation of putting the tigers a little bluster than they actually are in the scene. I’m Not saying that it isn’t as accurately as you’ve told just saying that upon the films release this was one of the points that they’ve made in hyping up the spectacle of the film.

The Roman (and Greek) ideal was a citizen soldier who only served in times of emergency to defend the Republic and then went home to his farm. there was a scene (in the full director's cut, but it was cut in the theatrical version) before the last fight, when Quintus, as if apologizing and justifying himself, says to Maximus: "I'm a soldier. The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

It is fashionable to say so, as Joaaquin's star has risen. But actually Crowe had by far the hardest part. (And Phoenix said so himself.) Not only did he have to carry the whole epic story, do the action scenes (he did his own stunts and the mark on his face after the cavalry charge was when his horse reared into a tree and he cut his face on branches) but he had the difficult task of making a traditional action hero believable. Most epic heroes end up bland and wooden. Crowe took the whole hero thing to next level while still being a human being with believable emotions. His acting is extremely subtle. The very first scene looking at the robin. The scene on the roof with Juba. The final scenes when he is between two worlds as he dies. Some recent A List actors have tried to lead this kind of epic with no where near the success. Villains, on the other hand, are far more free-wheeling to play. You can really have fun and ham them up as much as you like.

Fun fact: in the scene where Maximus founds his family murdered, Crowe was supposed to just get to a mark on the ground, fall to his knees and cry while the camera showed the hanging feet. Crowe came to Ridley Scott and said to him that he didn’t agree with the scene being only that, that he had to at least get to their feet and kiss them. He said that Maximus would feel he ultimately failed them, but that he wouldn’t fail them at least at getting to them. Ridley said that it would look ridiculous, but Crowe insisted. He was allowed to give it a shot, so they did one take. Ridley Scott was impressed, but apparently didn’t want to verbally admit he was wrong, so he just said to Crowe “just a little less snot”. So they tried again and the shot was included (thank God for that).

Seeing the emotion you had in all the climactic parts brought me back to when I first saw it! Just saw the sequel and while I'm part of the group that said it doesn't need a sequel, it still was enjoyable from an entertainment standpoint. I agree the soundtrack is GOATED forever.

Maximus’ own soldiers didn’t betray him. It was the praetorian guard (the dudes in purple). They’re essentially the emperor’s secret service, not the normal soldiers in Maximus’ army

This movie is my second favorite film of all time and I try and watch it at least once a month and I cry every time at the end and that’s okay. What we do in life echos in eternity is such a true line and Maximus definitely lived a life of honor
@Qualimar3 күн бұрын
"You think I'm afraid?" "I think you've been afraid all your life". Maximus probably cut Commodus deeper with that exchange than with the actual dagger.

History teacher/buff here. I was 19 or so when this came out. Saw it in the theater with my dad. When the barbarians showed up at the beginning ready for battle I heard their war cry and thought "jesus - that's not Germanic language - that's the war cry of the Zulu nation from South Africa"....almost as if the soundtrack from the 1964 movie Zulu was ripped off entirely. Years later, I learned that Ridley Scott loved Zulu so much that he decided he wanted to use their war cry from the movie and felt like it was so intense it helped set the mood for the battle against the romans. Love to see others like the same things I do.

It is indeed rare to find war movies that have thousands of real extras instead of CGI, I'd recommend for that the movie "Alexander" from 2004, it is the best depiction of antiquity wars ever filmed, even though initially the movie had bad reviews because of certain casting choices and slow pacing if you're not that much into the presented historical period, it's a very well researched and directed film especially regarding the large scale battles.

Absolutely A1 reaction. So many subtleties in this movie, not sure you missed ANY of them. Equally, a comprehensive & insightful summary. I simply HAD TO join, on the strength of this watch alone. Keep up the good work. ; )

"Is it normal to cry?" As a grown man who cries every time I see this movie, yes it's completely normal. You know how you always see those memes/shorts about how men want to just go out in a blaze of glory instead of peacefully in their beds? This movie shows why. We want to know that at the end of our lives, we died protecting something with cared for. We want to be remembered by those we leave behind, and have no regrets as we move on to meet those who went before us.

I'm not sure if anyone's said this yet because there's a lot of comments but the men who arrested Maximus after Commodus killed the previous emperor were not Maximus' soldiers. Except for Quintus (the guy who betrayed Maximus and told the guards to execute him), the men were Praetorian Guards not soldiers from the army. That means they were from Rome and served directly as the imperial family's guards. They don't really know Maximus and were loyal to Commodus. Commodus had to move very fast to get rid of Maximus because if Maximus had had time to get out and rally his men (an entire army loyal to him), it would have been over. Quintus was imperative in this maneuver. He was an ambitious man who probably betrayed Maximus after being offered power by Commodus. Later in Rome we see that he's been promoted to the head of Commodus' Praetorian Guard, a very prestigious position.

@CatherineLaSalle I had to see who beat him for best supporting actor that year, and it was Benicio Del Toro in Traffic. That movie was remarkable too but not sure if he was better than Jaoquin

When Maximus talks of going home, the Roman (and Greek) ideal was a citizen soldier who volunteered to defend the Republic in times of crisis and then went home. But in practice, by the time of the events of this movie (the reign of Marcus Aurelius), that was more a nostalgic relic than reality, and by then the legions were mostly professionals.

Ridley Scott always makes gorgeous-looking films. The sets are hyper-detailed and full of texture, the lighting and camerawork is artful, the close scenes are intimate, and the wide scenes are sweeping. Obviously he's not the one doing the set design and camerawork, but he has a very clear idea what he wants his movies to look like. If you look up "cinematic" in the dictionary, there's a still from a Ridley Scott movie. 😛 Just because his movies are gorgeous doesn't mean they're good; he's made some stinkers. But this is one of the good ones. Neither the story or characters are particularly complex, but the story is satisfyingly told, and the actors deliver some solid performances, especially Joaquin Phoenix's take on the cruel, cowardly, petulant, and unloved Commodus. Russell Crowe convincingly sells all of his badass lines. The music is iconic. Count me among the people who thought Gladiator never needed a sequel, and especially not the sequel that it got. If you liked Lisa Gerrard (the singer), she had a long run as part of Dead Can Dance, plus a bit of a solo career and numerous collabs, so quite a catalog to check out. Most of it is kind of vaguely Middle Eastern, folk, classical, or ambient vibes with her singing a made-up language over it.

Great Reaction. My dear young Lady, if this movie illicettes no emontion you aren't human. Princess Drucella and Maximus had a history and it is illuded that her son actuall belonged to Maximus, She loved Maximus more that any in life save her son. Releasing him to go to his family was teh hardet thing she ever did, hense, her sturn peach to the Senator and all the soldiers in the collaseum. Maximus was a man on his last mission and he saw it through to completion.
