Whistle Pig 10 Year makes me the maddest of all. The stuff originated from my home province of Alberta, they stick it in a different bottle and charge $120 CAD for it. Ridiculous. From the same distillery, you can get Alberta Premium Cask Strength 100% Rye for $65. Their 20 Year (admittedly below 90 Proof) if $75. They even had an affordable 30 Year a while back. No way.

@@paulbovis1277 the only one that i prefer is single barrel cask strength store picks, some are even Mgp. Not bad if you can find them around $80-90 range in age from 10-13 yrs old, even though the bottle says 10 yr on it. This was the rye that kept searching for more ryes. The only other one the comes close to it in taste is the Old Redemption ryes that have yellow labels and wax tops. Those are in same price range to $85-100. The newer versions aren't the same or worth the price.

@@leeniemann7955 Thanks for the reply! We only have the newer redemption rye's in Alberta. I may lay out the $100-120CAD for the base Whistle Pig offering just once, so I can see for myself if it is worth the high price tag. Store picks of any American products are very hard to come by in Canada as a whole although they do come along from time to time.

As I have told several liquor store managers: I will never, NEVER pay Scotch prices for bourbon. There is such a lack of integrity in the bourbon world. If those wonderful Scotsman can sit on barrels for 10 years before charging $40-50 for it, then why would I pay more for 4 year old bourbon that is often MGB.
@matthewgabbard64154 жыл бұрын
I understand what you're saying, but Bourbon matures much faster because of the hot, humid Ky Summers. Also the new charred oak imparts all that intense vanilla, caramel in shorter time. Scotland maintains a pretty even climate, and the used barrels take more time

@maximumenergy59254 жыл бұрын
The company's master distiller or taster is supposed to make sure that each and every barrel is great and while being unique and special in some type of way still close in consistency to what ever a bottle of none single barrel would be in the brand . If you are getting "hit or miss" bottles a lot , it's the fault of the head distiller of that particular company . I suggest try a different company .
@G3ekbox4 жыл бұрын
Maximum Energy It’s every distillery! Some better than others. But I’d rather have the same expression and be happy with the extra money I spent for something exceptional every time than be pissed off that it’s “lacking” compared to a previous barrel. This is why I LOVE my Hibiki. I know I’m getting consistency every bottle I buy. It’s a marketing gimmick! Look a last year’s Booker’s as an example...a price hike for some underwhelming offerings compared to previous releases.
@leeniemann79554 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the distiller and distributor, they set the prices. When you purchase single barrel directly from the distillery it still has to be shipped and sold by the distributor. Every state is a little different from what I have gathered. When you get a barrel of 6-8 year old whiskey you may only get around 120 bottles from 53 gallons due to evaporation over the year. Once you get around 10-15 year almost half the barrel is gone. That's why pricing is higher on those barrels, plus the tax the distiller had to pay on that barrel every year the had it in inventory. I think aging has more to do with pricing than anything else, next is demand/reputation and quality (imo).
@G3ekbox4 жыл бұрын
Lee Niemann oh I totally understand a “store pick” single barrel price strategy. I’m talking about the marketed single barrel bourbons from the distillery itself. Take for example, Henry McKenna or a Four Roses Single Barrel : It is a single barrel product that is marketed from the distillery as a single barrel. So in the case of Four Roses Single Barrel specifically, they charge more than a 4R small batch. Now, I understand that the proofs and age is usually higher, but i’d rather they just blended the higher proof/age stuff together to offer a more consistent flavor instead of playing the luck game. I’ve purchased some really good Henry McKenna and I’ve had some “meh” ones. And Obviously San Francisco Spirit Award judges must’ve gotten the holy grail barrel for it to win Best Whiskey.
@leeniemann79554 жыл бұрын
G3ekbox yep. That McKenna was honey barrel. Personally they should be judge in separate category, not an overall winner of all whiskeys.

Hey Jason - I just bought 1 here in ATL for $70 - a fair price - there were 2 available, but even my regular retailer would only let me have 1. I'd pay $70 all day long. But most importantly - the Buckeyes start this Saturday. I know you're from Jersey, but have grown to love the Bucks! Cheers! Cliff Lash

I work at a large chain, national, liquor store. It's RIDICULOUS the crying babies unicorn hunting for Blanton's, etc. almost daily!! There's far better product at more reasonable prices. Believe me, I've tasted my share of them!

Man for the past week The Party Souce right over the river has been selling Blanton's to fools between $179-$229, before tax, ... it's selling but slowly. People, myself included, picked up the bottle saw the prices on the board behind them... put then right back.

Thank you for your insight Jason. We need more whiskey tubers/influencers to call out these brands on their ridiculous pricing.

Good review! You were spot on with the over pricing on these bourbons. A month ago I bought a bottle of eagle rare, but then realized that it was 49.99, with just a year ago being 39.99. So, I'm going to stay with the reasonably priced ones from now on. Lastly I hope these companies are not using the epidemic as an excuse to sky rocket prices because that would be a very Scumbag move on their part. Stop being SB' s all you bourbon companies mentioned in the video 😂😆😁

Blanton's showed up at the local beverage retailer about two-three months ago. Word got out via instagram and Facebook. Unknowingly walked into the hype-fed feeding frenzy - was in for a Pikesville refill. 30ish guy proudly holding a Blanton's in each hand at about $80 per asked, "Why aren't you getting the Blanton's?" "I love the Pikesville. Nice complexity, not overly spicy, the lingering sweetness and it's just so entertaining to my tastebuds." "Why are you grabbing so much Blanton's? "I never tried it before but my friend said it was sooo smooth..." Overhyped and over-priced is a good thing if what you're drinking is neither. Great Great episode.

This video is spot on. I agree with you 100% on everything. Especially the Wellers. I have them all just to have them for my collection. Every time I try them again and give them a chance because I want to like them ...I don’t. They are flat, not complex, no layered flavors and finish is weak. This video is great and I recommend it to many! Thank You and great job!

Greetings from Jacksonville Florida USA. Here's my arithmetic: A 750-ml/25.8-oz bottle provides 12+ 2-oz pours. Thus, a $60 bottle costs $5 per pour. That's my hard limit these days. As you show so well, there are so many delicious bottles for $30-60. Anyway, my palette isn't refined enough to appreciate much above this class. I suspect that the great majority of your viewers are in the same boat. Fun to watch, though, if only because the market has become such a show. LOL.

Enjoying my $54 "handle" of Elijah Craig, but I frequently see Weller Special reserve for $23 here.

Exactly. They give that shit away here in in Kansas. Reserve and Antique 107 is sub $40 here, basically collecting dust.

The pappy lineup has 5 bottles released every year, yet they are unicorns in stores that make it seem like a collector item from decades ago. This marketing tactic goes under the radar and I cannot wait for the day when these bottles become dustys. Agreed with all of these whiskey's listed, as much as I appreciate buffalo trace, the hype train needs to calm down. Have these guys even heard of Ironroot???

Great video, I agree with you on almost all of these. I tasted a Pappy 15 in Louisville back in September, good but not worth the secondary market prices. Did a few Blanton's flights, same thing, good but only would buy at MSRP. I use to see Blanton's all the time here in PA and always passed on it. Now people go crazy trying to get it. 😂🥃

So perfect to see you saying like it is. This is all hype and marketing. Remember the reason these bourbons are so expensive is that IT IS WHAT PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR THEM. I have tried Pappys, Rip Van Winkle and Weller and NO they are NOT worth 10 - 20 times the price of other wheated bourbons that I have. I love your honesty, keep it coming!!

I appreciate these kind of videos, because there's no worse feeling than finding a hard to locate bottle (or worse, paying a lot for a readily available bottle), then taking that first sip and tasting nothing but buyer's remorse. I would never even consider buying anything on the secondary market. The thrill of the hunt (at retail stores) is what it's all about - being in a Total Wine store the one day of the year when the guy is stocking the E.H. Taylor Single Barrel (which happened to me, but I ended up selling it to a friend, so I never even got a taste:).
