I love that some of them mentioned how long they are with the company gives a realistic mind set because the difference between an artist working with a company for a year versus 15 years. The reasoning between what they are getting payed is helpful as well.

I really wish the UK would pay animators and artists like this. Unless I'm missing something, even senior animators in the UK get about 30-50K less than the animators with 1 year experience in the US.

Thanks for the informative video. I really hope that through some miracle the games industry unionizes. Companies will really do anything and everything to avoid it though. My goal is to work in the games industry and it’s disheartening to hear how much less games artists often make than their counterparts in TV/Film.

And I never earned more (in games) than 32k/year, usual was even 22k, working at 4 game studios (pretty small ones, tho, there's no such a thing as unions here, also), covering almost any profile one can imagine. It ain't about negotiation; nothing better in my area... I guess the country you work at is an immensely crucial factor in this conversation, even in the 1st world. Anyway, cost of living tends to be very different, too (but it doesn't make for the low salary, not even close).

I really like the idea of making emotes for twitch, make fantasy art or just art for t-shirts. Im not really into complicated things or doing to many things at once so for exemple if I want to make art commissions I just want to be doing 2 thing. I also can not do/work to hard. I have burn out and just can not seem to get much better. Im now getting into social media marketing and I like writing for spesific oudiences to motivate people. I love doing research on a topic and then write something short about it. Its still a lot for me. I am sad but I know I try my best. I just feel like I want too many things. I live with my bf and I feel like I want to give him more of my time.

Hi Mew, I love your videos! They’re all so informative and helpful! I’m a story artist out of college trying to of course become a story artist, BUT I know I might not be one right away and have to work from the ground up. (Unless my work gets really good) So I’m wondering if you know of “entry level” jobs that I should also be applying for so I could at least get my foot in the door y’know and get more experience so I won’t be looked down on for NOT having experience. I’ve been applying for story artist jobs of course, but the rejections have been getting a bit more discouraging…^^; If I missed the video on that, my bad! If Mew or anyone in the comments can link the video, that would be a big help! OR if anyone else has advice on this, I’d really appreciate it! ^^

Really useful vid! I have a question, are there any animation jobs that are more stable and less "project-driven"? like working for a company not related to the entertainment industry? i have heard the medicine and aircraft industry is in need of animators
@mewTripled
@mewTripled Жыл бұрын
That's interesting to hear. I think the closest would be at bigger feature studios like Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, but the only caveat there is that it may be a slower pace of growing into a leadership position if that is what you're looking for. However it does seem more stable overall for artists in general.

In the US, do game artists earn less than artists in animation? I’m a pre-uni student in the UK and my only frame of reference is looking at game concept art jobs here. Tbh I had no idea the salary gap between the UK and US is so big. Those artists you mentioned with a year or less of experience are earning more than senior concept artists here. From my research the typical salary range for a junior concept artist in the UK is £22-30k ($24.5-36k), but I’ve only seen a few examples on the higher end and more on the lower end, which is around minimum wage or just above. It sucks because there are hardly any junior/entry level/internship job listings, and the average salary feels unfairly low when you look at the range of skills most of the jobs require. I rly wish more people would talk about money when it comes to the creative industries Edit: Due to the lack of reliable info on salaries, I can't even be certain that the decent info I do have is representative :/

Unfortunately I'm not as familiar with the game industry, but I do feel as though they're underpaid compared to film/tv animators. I am not 100% sure on if there is a union for game animators, but there may be moments of overlap depending on what studio or project. I do see the union shows support for the gaming industry and there is the beginning of an organization happening for it in the US though!: rpgunion.org/

@@mewTripled Thanks for the reply :D Hopefully the workers in the game industry will get on board with unionisation! I don't think I'd ever want to travel to the US for work, but if international remote work becomes normalised I'd be up for that. Your videos are great btw, I think you strike a good balance between popular appeal and educational :)
