When I first moved to Canada I also felt awkward when receiving compliments from strangers 😂 By the way, if I don’t know the person I who i speak to that well, I wouldn’t start the conversation with a negative comment because first impression is important. If you start bringing negativity comment to people since the first sentence, then right away they will assume that you are a negative person in general. That’s why some people rolled their eyes at you when you said American coffee was not good. That’s because you sent people messages that you are better than average Americans. I personally dislike when when people approach me with a negative attitude.
