I was 17 and between my Junior and Senior year. I began my lifetime love of music in ‘76 when I DJ’d my 7th and 8th grade dances. We had the speakers on volleyball poles and there was a noticeable gap in the music as we had only one turntable. I I helped local DJ Dan Bushman at our local Shangrala Activities Center on Saturday nights in 9th grade in Appleton, Wisconsin by loading his gear in and out. I got ‘paid’ by albums lol. This is when he made $50 for a 3 hour gig, I remember he gave me a radio station promotional cut out album of Hotel California that I sold to a friend, Vicki Kohlman for four bucks. I moved to Nevada in ‘78 and through mutual friend met Randy Swanson who was the DJ at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. He encouraged me to start my own mobile music business. Twenty year old me saved up and started Sounds Good/Rockit Productions complete with those huge Peavey amps and speakers. Thirty five years and over 1,200 weddings, fundraisers and special events later I hung up the headphones. I became a Stage Hypnotist and my show HYPNOT!C had a 3 year run in Reno. Thanks for letting a 61 year old man ramble and reminisce.

Superstars here....thank you. Donna Summer was prolifically popular this year; it amazed me how little time was spent by all of us when she died a few years ago. Shame. Great year, many memories. Thank you, Francis.

The diversity of 70s music is what makes it so special. This generation of music all sounds the same. Musicians played back then. Today they just create a few beats on a mixer add some autotune vocals and call it music.

1979 what a great year. So many musical styles the pop and rock songs still popular from earlier in the decade, mix in a generous helping of Disco and a tasting of the New Wave music yet to come in the new decade. Sadly at the time I don't think we truly appreciated the variety we were treated to.

I learned to roller skate in 1978. Practically lived in the roller rink the next several years. So yes all this music brings back great memories. I was 12 in 1979. I love the music of the 60s, 70s and 80s. After that apart from a few really good songs the best I can say about the music is meh. Most of it I dislike. I really thought I’d always love whatever music was currently popular, but it does nothing for me. I like music from my parents era so it’s not just the fact of liking only music from my preteen, teen and young adult years. And I like all types of music from heavy metal to disco to easy listening and more. I find nothing odd about liking The Bee Gees, KISS, Def Lepard, Barry Manilow, Queen and many more. Today’s music doesn’t make me smile, dance and want to sing along like these songs do.

francis pelletier did an awesome job arranging this collection of snippets for us, Ryan. As an avid chart collector and music connoisseur, I must let you know that MANY of your chart "year corrections are incorrect, sir. Date of Peak is different than the original chart release date, which were often released many months (peak in early 79 but released in mid or late 78, for example). Appreicate you trying to correct this info, but check out Joel Whitburn's books and look at the Date of Peak, not the Date of Release. And you are so wrong in Little River Band being popular in 73. I lived during this era and remember it well. Did you, Ryan?

Two tidbits on 1979: David Naughton's "Makin' It" was the theme song from the show of the same name in which he starred. The song spent more weeks in the Billboard Top 40 (16) than the show stayed on the air (13). Regarding the backlash against disco, WGCL in Cleveland refused to air an American Top 40 special on the 40 greatest disco hits the weekend of July 7-8. Instead they had one of their DJs, Townsend Coleman, host a "fake" American Top 40 by pretending he was sitting in for Casey Kasem and using the July 7th. Billboard count down the Top 40 songs of the week. This was in the days before social media, so word of this did not get to Casey until years later. I heard the "fake" show and how I wish I had recorded it!

I was born in 79 and I have no clue how I found this. I mean I like some of the songs don't get me wrong but ummm I'm glad I graduated in 97 😆 I'm sure if I would have been born sooner I would resonate a lot more with the music from this list.

Great compilation. Thanks for the memories. Loved the Commodores, KC & The Sunshine Band, and Dr. Hook.

Well Donna Summer took the prize with 5 songs in this countdown. The Bee Gees, Kenny Rodgers, Michael Jackson, and a few others have 3 songs in it.

My favorite is the song she did with Barbara Streisand No More Tears, Enough Is Enough. Partly because you never hear it.

Excelentes recuerdos musicales y radiales de ese año 1979, muchos grandes éxitos, pero imperdonable, imperdonable no haber recordado y puesto el gran suceso mundial de Electric Light Orchestra ELO, "Last train to London".

"Last train to London" charted USA in 1980, you'll find there.

The UK and US overlap so much in music. The UK charts were also loaded with American bands at this time.

Un año bueno ya que Queen, Supertramp, Kenny Rogers, Electric Light Orchestra, Earth, wind & Fire, Michael Jackson, Kiss, Bee Gees y otros estaban en su mejor época.
