I love your movies! You're my favorite garden youtuber from US! In my country, fruit trees die out also in early spring because the warm weather wakes up the trees and then frosts come. In Poland the trunks of fruit trees are painted in white using lime so that the sun's rays do not heat the trunks and do not stimulate plants to grow to early. Greetings, Anna

One thing the old timers used to do was to start feeding a very high potash fertilizer after August. Potash helps the tree form mature wood. Some phosphate is good at this time too, because it makes the tree grow healthier roots. Under no circumstance give your trees nitrogen in fall. Another thing old timers would do was sprinkle moth crystals around the base of their trees. That is because the larvae and pupae of some borers winter over in the soil and the fumes from the crystals seep down into the ground and suffocate the larvae. One way to tell if you have such borers is to look at the base of the tree. If you see tiny holes with a pile of sawdust below, you have borers.

In fall my Grandpa would put a slow trickle under his younger maple tree for a long time, to make sure it had sufficient water to stand the winter. That tree is now one of the biggest trees in town. People think it is amazing and remark about it.

Deer and mice have been my biggest problems here in zone 4 (mpls xurbs). I put corrugated tubing around the smaller trees to prevent freeze-thaw in the middle of the winter. Some trees will never thrive due to their location (poor soil, sun or drainage). For me fruit trees have been the most difficult. I've got 6 apple, 2 plum, 1 peach, 2 cherry. I dont fertilize my trees, and my yard is clay like soil with poor drainage. I've never lost a tree to the winter. It actually got down to zone four temps last winter, too, which is neg 30F. My grapes were hit pretty hard, and I lost two crab apples trees that were over 30 years old (so ready to go anyway). Otherwise all of my tree losses have been a result of too much rain - we are well above typical around here. Last year was a record high precipitation year (and the growing season was shorter than usual as well). 2019 growing season was absolutely brutal - my worst results ever.

Unrelated to the video but my copy of The Autopilot Garden came in yesterday and I’m about to start reading it a second time! It’s well written and comprehensive. This truly is an amazing method backed by the trial and errors ( that most of us gardeners have experienced ) condensed into a superior method. I HIGHLY recommend investing $20 if you’re on the fence. You will certainly see a return on that investment in many forms. Great work Luke, the dedication and acknowledgement almost had me in tears. I’m so impressed with what you have achieved and looking forward to implementing this on my little homestead. Grow big or GO HOME 🤙🏼

It actually varies from tree to tree within one species, often depending on their origin. There are apple varieties that simply can take more cold than others. The origin of trees is especially important in forestry, as it determines the cold hardiness as well as the time of bud break (danger of late frosts).

@@AlsHomestead Yes, that's very true. My crabapple tree looked very bad, maybe pests, because many of the branches were dead or dying. I was concerned that it wasn't going to make enough energy with its few leaves. I put quite a lot of sugar in buckets of water and nourished the tree all around its base with the sugar water. I said a prayer for the tree as it has great sentimental value to me. Soon the tree bounced back. I was happily surprised, as it had looked very bad. I think the sugar gave it enough energy to overcome its problems.
