The biggest reason why the people that washed out of my basic/ait cycle in the Army was just plain quiting and wanting to go home. We had several in my training unit. The sad part is after everyone else had graduated basic and ait and was leaving those that chose to quit early on was still there waiting to get discharged. A discharge that will most likely follow them the rest of their lives with no positive effect.

I joined the Navy when I was eighteen. I expected the physical stuff and pushups. I loved the protocol and regimen. I'd found my place. Two weeks in I started getting sick in the morning. Couldn't hold my breakfast down. Sick all day. Sent to sickbay and missed training, a lot. They couldn't find anything wrong with me so assumed I was malingering. I purposely failed the first battery of tests so I would be set back and not be a burden on my company. New company. Every day I got sicker. I went from a skinny kid of 135 lbs to a little over 100 lbs. It was just after Vietnam and you could get sent home for pissing your rack or sleepwalking. A senior master chief shoved some papers to me and said I should sign them. I was assigned to an OGU (out going unit). I thought I could get better and back in training. I was given an honorable discharge and told I was never there. And a plane ticket home. Nothing will ever make what happened right. I signed away my right to medical care. I was a sick kid and let them wash me out. I do not blame anyone but myself. Ten years later I found out I had stomach ulcers. Men in my family served their country. I couldn't do that and will always be a failure. Not a day has gone by in forty five years that I don't think about what could have been.

I know what stomach ulcers was like, I had one myself two years back for a month straight… couldn’t hold no real amount of food down, just drank water… took a week to find out it was an ulcer and was prescribed PPIs, that later made me become anemic and mentally stressed… yeah it wasn’t a good time.

You are certainly in the Navy in boot camp. Nothing technical about it. The whole Recruit ball cap to Navy ball cap switcharoo is purely ceremonial and symbolic. There was a time when even before I was in where recruits were given the Navy ball cap from the start. They changed it later to make the final accomplishment more memorable.

Doesnt MEPS test your blood for the purpose of finding out if you have drugs in your system or if you have HIV OR STDs of any form or HEP of any form before you go to bootcamp?? How would the Navy let you make it all the way through DEP and get to bootcamp just to fail and get kicked out off RTC for another blood test and having it show positive on anything finding out Medical conditions from your blood? What is the point of the first blood test than??? I am seriously inquiring and wondering why the number one reason for failing bootcamp would be this reason?? Understood if you lie about a pre- existing condition at MEPS and make it through too bootcamp and then they find out about it and kick you out.

They now allow people up to age 40ish; they have lowed the minimum ASVAB scores; they allow some felonies; and even people on the obese side get a pass.
