Popular and dashing American singer Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) travels to East Germany to perform in a music festival. When he loses his heart to the gorgeous Hillary Flammond (Lucy Gutteridge), he finds himself caught up in an underground resistance movement. Rivers joins forces with Agent Cedric (Omar Sharif) and Flammond to attempt the rescue of her father, Dr. Paul (Michael Gough), from the Germans, who have captured the scientist in hopes of coercing him into building a new naval mine.

Great reaction Tim...Top Secret is an underrated comedy gem. Another good Val Kilmer comedy film (made the following year in 1985 - and just recently got a HD Blu-Ray release) is 'Real Genius'. Another funny one with Val from the 80s worth checking out in my opinion. ✌️

Cedric was played by Omar Sharif, who starred in Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia. All of that island stuff is a takeoff of "Blue Lagoon" with Brooke Shields. Val's next film after this was "Real Genius", which is a hilarious movie about college geniuses.

Fun Fact: This movie was the last film for Peter Cushing; before his death. To create the Oversized eye; they had to do a face mold on him. This mold was still intact then Lucas Films started making Rogue One A Star Wars Story. They acquired the mold; in order to create the 3D rendering of his face for the movie. Hence the reason why it looked so much like him. Thanks to this film; Lucas Films were able to bring General Tarkin back

Because I never watch this film with subtitles, your reaction is the first time I caught the "University of Blaupunkt" joke. Which proves to me once again that not a single viewing goes by where I don't discover something new. This film is the Zucker Brothers' masterpiece.

🥸👍 Another great (and unfairly forgotten) movie that features this style of humor is "Young Doctors In Love" (1982). It's basically an elongated goof on every television soap opera or drama that was ever set in a hospital ("General Hospital," "Ben Casey," "Dr. Kildare," "Marcus Welby MD" etc). It's currently up on KZbin in it's entirety.

It is often claimed that English played backwards sounds like Swedish, but they decided not just to do the audio, but the whole scene in reverse. The film is a parody of war movies, spy movies and Elvis movies all rolled into one. The tropical island was a parody of 'The Blue Lagoon'. The car they hit the bumper of was a model notorious for its petrol tank exploding with little provocation.

I'm not sure if anyone mention this, but Top Secret isn't a Spy Parody, but a Multi-genre Parody movie. The first scene; we are parody not only music like The Beach Boys, but the whole of the Beach Teen movies of the 60s. The movie is also doing a parody of Elvis Presley movies. One of the reasons why they rewrite 'Love Me Tonight' into a Marcy Ad. Kilmer also does his best Elvis during that scene. The overall theme is 50s and 60s War movies, as well as the whole spy parody. The scene of the island; is taken from the Brooke Shields movie, The Blue Lagoon. So you see; this isn't only one type of parody, like movie like Airplane, which parodies the Airport and Disaster films of the 70s. No; this parodies many movies types. All of it very clearly written; even the dumb jokes pay off big. Between this, and Real Genius. really put Val Kilmer on the map. Also; Kilmer did all the singing himself. The soundtrack is actually under his character's name of Nick Rivers, but it's all Val.

Of course others have mention the Airplane and Naked Gun films. But to catch Zucker, Zucker and Abrams at their earliest you must check out their first film "The Ketucky Fried Movie." Also the Naked Gun films are based of short-lived TV series called "Police Squad." If you can find all 6 episodes I would love to see you react to these especially if you haven't seen the films as it would be the best way to be introduced to Leslie Nielson's character.

The bulgy ballet dancers reference dance belts, I think. Although IRL those combined with tights created camel toes, on male dancers. The reversed scene with the mutant librarian is a joke about swedish sounding like english spoken backwards. Nigel's flashback is a parody of the Blue Lagoon(1980), a movie about a pair of kids stranded on an island & boinked like bunnies when they grew up. Ford Pinto is known as one of the worst car ever made, that's why it explodes from a light bump. Scarecrow getting hugged is a parody from a similar scene in the Wizard of Oz(1939). In case you want some context on those.

So you asked for more Val Kilmer recommendations. I already know without even looking there’s a glut of people telling you to watch “Tombstone”. And yes absolutely. A phenomenal film! But I’m going to to tell you, if you want to see and hear just what a talent Val Kilmer is, check out one of his alltime classic performances in the movie “The Doors” (1991) About the 1960s rock band. Kilmer plays Jim Morrison, and sings all the songs you see performed in the movie. He’s incredible!

Top Secret is not a bad movie, as Hillary says, but an absurd humor movie, a genre that has almost disappeared. It is full of allusions to other films. For example, the story of Hillary and Nigel on the island is a parody of The Blue Lagoon, a very successful romantic movie in the 80s. Even the aesthetics of both were the same. Hillary's dilemma of finding her former partner turned Resistance leader is clearly straight out of Casablanca, a movie I highly recommend if you haven't seen it. Nick and his fans are a copy of Elvis Presley and his. The partisans reviewing the plan of attack with the model is inspired by The dirty dozen. And Nick's motorcycle career stems from The Great Escape, which also inspired Chicken Run. The scarecrow is a nod to The Wizard of Oz. And, of course, the fact that an actor becomes President is an allusion to Ronald Reagan. The men dressed as female gymnasts are an allusion to the rumors that, in communist countries, anabolics were given to female gymnasts, with such results.

The men as women athletes ... no, that hasn't aged well at all. The gag was female athletes in Bloc countries were supposedly pumped with steroids to compete better during the Cold War years, so by '84, you couldn't tell the difference. But that's not the problem with that gag. The problem is ... in the US, males who are totally girls have been gradually taking over female sports quite a bit over the last 5 years. So that's almost what women's sports look like now.
