The legendary "loot of a thousand worlds" inspires an intergalactic treasure hunt when 15-year-old Jim Hawkins stumbles upon a map to the greatest pirate trove in the universe in Walt Disney Pictures' thrilling animated space adventure, "Treasure Planet." Based on one of the greatest adventure stories ever told - Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" - this film follows Jim's fantastic journey across a parallel universe as a cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon.

I can't believe how many people think Silver didn't deserve a redemption... He's a classic "bad guy gone good" character. I love the relationship between him and Jim. The only reason he was bad in the first place is because he became obsessed with being rich and was willing to committ numerous crimes in order to get what he wanted. He obviously never felt loved until he met Jim. He probably didn't even realise he had any goodness left in his heart until he met Jim. Jim helped him become a better person and Silver in a way helped Jim from becoming more like him, as Jim seemed to be heading in a bad direction near the start of the movie... In my opinion, Silver deserves just as much of a redemption as Edward Norton's character in American History X.

Couldn’t have said it better myself! Though I think Silver’s desire for the treasure was different than the rest of the crew. Sure he wanted the riches, but finding that treasure was his lifelong dream. He even gave up body parts to see it through. And the fact he gave Jim some of the little treasure he managed to snag proves it wasn’t really about money, just seeing a dream come to fruition. I’d say Silver is my favorite character in the movie. His complexity is a marvel.

Silver successfully turned a juvenile delinquent into an aspiring young man with a bright future. And at the same time, Jim pushed silver to let go of his obsession and care about somebody else for once.

So the film is basically a space version of Treasure Island. Also the animation for Long John Silver was ground breaking because his robotic arm was 3d while the rest of him was 2d. The opening narration was by Tony Jay who voiced Frollo in Hunchback of Notre Dame. The directors behind the film also directed: The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Princess and the Frog, and Moana.

I hear so many people say that they don't think Silver deserved the redeeming ending he got, and I think that's really unfair to say. One of the most telling things about his personality in my opinion is the way he treats Morph so well, and that fact that Morph stayed by his side all that time really shows that Silver has had the capacity for kindness in his heart all along.

If I remember correctly, Treasure Planet came out at the same time as Harry Potter. Considering HP was so popular, it makes sense that TP would flop. I think if it hadn’t been for that, it might have done ok. I love this movie along with Atlantis. I think Jim’s story and actions are so relatable for many young teens, which is why I love this film. And though you only see his mom briefly, she’s also relatable for parents with her acknowledgment of her son being intelligent and kind but clearly struggling with something.

5:39 The thing is I don't think she really recovered either. I mean, her husband left her with a son to raise and a business to run on his own. But she's barely had time to grieve her loss as much as she would like because she's had to focus on keeping the business afloat so that her son has a place to live with clothes on his back and food on his plate. But she's hurting from how his father treated her same as Jim is. They're both dealing with it badly and can't talk to each other about it. And I think she's also worried on some level that if Jim just keeps doing whatever he feels like and never applies himself to anything or takes responsibility for anything then he might end up doing what his father did to someone else

This is the prime example of why passion projects are always worth the time to find; they may not be as polished but they have impressive creativity and attention to detail, on a level that the massively promoted panderings rarely match. This is one of the few with such prominent and distinctive implementation of 2d hand drawn combined with 3d computer generated, to portray that sometimes things will be our of your control and still bite you from behind, but to keep your chin up and stick with what you believe in for the better anyway, and sadly one of the last to show how characters are rarely black and white but can still change by influencing one-another.

Disney messed up not promoting this movie in the advertisement. It has everything a kid would want. Pirates, surfing on hoverboards, treasure, adventure, flying ships, and even a relatable protagonist (seriously, how many Disney protagonists were just straight up abandoned by their father instead of the parent being dead?!). This could have been a hit with the audience if they had been willing to promote it.

Ron Clements and John Musker (some of the key contributors to the Disney Renaissance) wanted to make this long before it was made. It was a project they wanted to do and actually pitched it the same time they pitched the little mermaid. The studio thought that it wasn’t a good idea but TLM did fantastic! They asked again for their passion project but the studio said no. They pitched Aladdin and BAM💥 another hit! They pitched Treasure Planet again. Denied🙅🏻‍♀️ Studio told them FINE you give us one more good film, and we’ll do it. And then we got the zero to hero, Hercules. Now the studio HAD to hold up their end of the deal. They got to make their passion piece and boy you can tell the passion! I LOVED this movie and never knew why (as a kid) people didn’t love it more but looking back, it wasn’t very well promoted. Kinda like the studio did the bare minimum to keep some of their most important creators happy to keep them producing more bangers (Clements and Musker later crunk out The Princess and the Frog and Moana) It’s like the male centered films (IMO) don’t get as much recognition and princess films and it’s just sad because this film is amazing ❤

Depending on how you look at this movie, they made a lot of mistakes with it, but also did a lot of things right. The novel it is based on is rather dry to read, which is owned to the time it was written. This is where they did right the most things when adapting it. The changes did enhance the characters a lot while they kept most of the original plot. I won't go into the negatives, because there is one thing that is more important they did right that not just balances out the bad, but surpasses that, it is fun to watch and has something I'm missing these days, the feeling of experiencing an adventure. It doesn't matter if can you see partially what is coming like the booby trap in the end, you are in with the characters. For example, you feel with Silver when he lets go of the treasure. No matter what you think of him, you know what he is giving up and in my opinion, that's one of the three moments where he redeems himself at least do far that he earns a get out of jail card this once. The other two points? When he gets the captain to turn the ship around and trust Jim and in the end when he gives Jim the little treasure he got. True, he might still have some in that coat of his, but at least he makes up for burning down Jim's home. Just because he's a bad guy, doesn't mean he is a bad guy.

The Disney basically sabotaged this movie during its release to ensure it would bombed in box office. That way they would have an excuse to finally close their 2D department to avoid paying too much taxes for that, and focus on 3D animated features from now then. No confirmation, obviously. But there are a lot of clues to support this was the case.

0:05 This movie was like Atlantis in that it was a passion project throughout the Disney Renaissance by a couple guys on the Disney staff, but the higher ups didn't want it to happen. It eventually got made, but then the higher ups sabotaged its success by marketing it badly (putting spoilers in the trailer to make the movie seem like it had a different quality than it actually does), and premiering it only a week after Harry Potter 2. What does drag this movie down otherwise, though, is probably mainly BEN...

another underrated gem is "Spirit: Stallion of the Cinnaron" (2002) which has a fantastic soundtrack, beautifully illustrated scenery and genuinely shows the colonisation of the "wild west" through non-human eyes. a huge childhood favourite

Treasure Planet, an updated version of a classic book that DOESN'T get enough love & out of anything is deserving of a sequel, tv show & a live action remake! I'm serious look up the plans for the original planned sequel & some of the fanfiction that show how much this movie is loved. Also Long John Silver wasn't blowing smoke to Jim. You can tell because when he gave Jim that speech after Mr. Arrow's death he didn't call him Jim or Jimbo it was "Now you listen to me JAMES HAWKINS" he's addressing him by his name sternly like a father who's trying to uplift his son would

Ah, this was when 2D animated movies started to fall out of favor in cinemas(it started with 1999's Tarzan). Until Disney said "f*** it, no more 2D movies" after Princess & the Frog's middling performance, with the final nail in the coffin being Tangled's success. It mostly has to do with 2D requiring more work to animate(like stop motion animation) while with 3D you basically played with digital puppets(like stop motion too, but more convenient). The story itself is a sci-fi adaptation of Treasure Island, I've never watched any of its more grounded adaptation(it's a popular novel) but I know Christian Bale starred in one in his teens.

What i found crazy about this movie, esentially the opening and ending, is how Nathaniel Flynn was so dedicated to his Pirate life and so came the most desperate attempt of securing his thousand worlds treasure, literally rigging the planet to blow, that takes some serious dedication of selfishness

Great reaction Timothee! Definitely one of my favorite Disney films. For underrated animation I’d recommend Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Cats Don’t Dance, The Triplets of Belleville, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Duck Tales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, Green Lantern: First Flight, Wolf Walkers, Superman vs the Elite and, if you can find it, Marcoss: Do You Remember Love?

It's curious the fact that there are some similarities between this movie and Muppet Treasure Island (both traitor pirates run with the treasure until the protagonists house, both houses explode in the beginning, the main villain is a cooker in both, etc.)

My understanding of why Treasure Planet bombed in theaters was because the budget was unusually high for an animated movie ($140M), and even for Disney it was very difficult to turn a profit. And maybe there wasn't much money left for marketing. Personally, I don't think it had anything to do with the quality.

I think Brave Little Toaster is incredibly underrated, and it's my favorite animated movie of all time. Would love to see you review this one. But yes, this movie is truly amazing as well. Oh, and if you like this movie, you'll probably really like Titan A.E. as well. It came out in the year 2000 actually. It has very similar vibes to this one, and also features a young adult going to space as a main character, but it's a completely different story. I hope you'll review both of these!
