Helicopters have always suffered from loss of lift the faster they go. As a rotor rotates, one side gains lift, while the other side looses it the faster the aircraft goes. So, by having counter rotating blades, each side gains lift/looses lift together, balancing each other out. This means faster forward speed. Clever.

The other issue is the advancing blade breaking the sound barrier. If I recall the X2 demonstrator and this Defiant slow the rotation of the rotors as the airspeed goes up. The retreating blade stall gets worse, but you still stay airborne because of the counter rotating rotors.

The biggest advantage this platform has is that it doesn’t require new hangers to be built and so far it would take less time to train aviators to fly. The V-280 meets or exceeds the FLRAA requirements put out by the Army and they did it first, showing how mature their tech is. In the Pacific, the V280 is the clear winner, in Eastern Europe they are closely matched, and in the mountains Defiant X has the advantage. In a La Drang style battle, I’d give the win to the Defiant X yet in a Desert Storm scenario, the V280 wins with the superior range, speed and troop capacity. For operation Anaconda in Afghanistan that seems to be a FARA helicopter battle. The battle of Mogadishu was an ambush that the US barged right into, neither aircraft would have gone down in tail shots that took down the Blackhawks yet the V280 is the bigger target and I don’t believe that it could touchdown in the same streets the Blackhawk did forcing it to land in intersections. It will be a tough decision.

@@jpvanden1 1st, the Osprey isn't being replaced. This is strictly an Army competition which doesn't use the Osprey. 2nd, the Osprey isn't obsolete. The navy is actually using to replace their resupply plane, it is the favorite of the US Airforce Spec ops, and the Marines use it as a workhorse. 3rd, the competition is all about replacing the Blackhawk. The reason that you wouldn't is that you would get less of either craft if you got both and they would be more expensive since you get less advantage from economy of scale.

So because it has no lifting surfaces aside from a slightly lifting body design that looks to integrate Stealth Shapes and Composites as well as the contra-spinning rotors that offer incredible stability and quietness that can also use tilt rotor blades on multiple axis’s it can remain incredibly stable and pull really smooth and stable maneuvers and the push fan allows it to push the aircraft to high speeds that counteract any lift from the body and allow it to reach some pretty awesome speeds. It’s definitely one Bad A$$ Helicopter. I did a Project thesis for my Aerospatiale engineering class at Drexel University in Philadelphia To show how the contrarotating Rotors allow for a great deal of control And maneuverability simply by changing them the pitch of the blades on each Rotor to pull some pretty incredible maneuvers as well as to maintain stable and level flight while the push fan essentially forces the aircraft forward allowing the speed of the craft to also maintain stability. It’s a fascinating helicopter with some pretty advanced technologies. It’s all fly by wire and multiple computers Take information from multiple gyroscopic stabilizers And multi redundant six axis accelerometers, All fed through a single main triple redundant flight computer to ensure that the helicopter remains stable throughout all maneuvers. Meaning even in auto pilot it can alter the pitch of the blades as well as the push propeller speed to remain stable and flying straight even in some severe weather. It’s also incredibly quire and the Rotors are designed for sound deadening which is really advanced since contra-rotating rotors are normally loud due to choppy turbulent air between the blades and the push fan can be completely shut down and the aircraft can maneuver without it in silent running mode.

Honestly for the Kiowa, blackhawk, and apache replacements I'd go for Raider and Defiant. V280 is cool and all, but transitioning to vertical flight mode and back to "airplane" mode on the fly (pun not intended) in a timely manner is questionable. Also that wingspan on the V280 makes me wonder on the capabilities of where it can land compared to the Defiant, it may require more space for landing or hiding behind trees than the Defiant which I see as a disadvantage. Sucks that Lockheed bought sikorsky as Lockheed has been having a bad track record with various military projects but I still see the Raider and Defiant as better options to pick if I had to choose despite that. I wouldn't be surprised if Army picks Defiant and Raider while the Marines go with the v280 to replace their cobra and huey as they have a thing for tilt rotors. When it comes to chinook replacement, I would go for the tilt-rotor (as long as Bell doesn't make it a quad tiltrotor, that should be reserved for the ultra heavy idea that could potentially replace c130) as wingspan wouldn't be a much of an issue with a heavy lift and the range speed is much more important for a heavy lift compared to a medium lift and light helicopter. Also Sikorsky is likely to push the ch53k for chinook replacement which I don't think would be a good replacement. The tail rotors of ch53k and Bell's proposed 360 Invictus is a thing of the past and not viable for the future of helicopter designs.

its actually not easy to make helicopters "stealthy" since the spinning rotor will reflect the radar signals back anyway.. you can probably make it less detectable with radar absorption PAINT, but you will need to re-apply the coat each time it fly, as it wears off, either from heat/friction and just being hit. as long as rotors are used, there is a technological cap on the max possible speed of a helicopter as opposed to fixed wing or jet planes. s

Sikorsky has the S-97 Raider compete with the Bell+Textron 360 Invictus in the AAS / FARA (armed scout) program. Meanwhile, the Sikorsky+Boeing SB-1 Defiant competes with the Bell+Lockheed V280 Valor for the FVL (long-range lift) program. Given how the US defense industry works, it is likely that both companies get one contract each, to keep every factory running, everybody employed. So if you like both Sikorsky or both Bell designs, get ready for a disappointment. The Raider has troop capacity while the Invictus does not, but that gives the Invictus better stealth properties, just like the Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche had. Not sure why they abandoned that design. Just to push a common scout and transport design when they know it's not very likely they'll get both contracts? The V280 seems to be the more mature design, faster and longer range. But the SB-1 might offer better handling and safety, as it is not a tilt rotor. And it's smaller, closer to the Blackhawk size. This might really go both ways.

Oh and my uncle is an AH-1Z Viper attack chopper. My grandmother was born an F22 Raptor and my granddad was an A10 Warthog. My great grandma was SU-57 Russian Jet and my great grandad was a Chinese Q-5 Fantan. My great great grandma was an SU-25 Russian Jet and my great great Grandad was a J-20 stealth Jet.
