I've been in a lot of fights as a kid and later trained mma, and let me tell you, nobody just grabs you by the collar and just stands still. If someone actually puts their hand on you, they are planning to go all the way i.e punching, kicking grappling and takedowns. MMA has shown us, which combat sports are most effective. It has also shown us that no individual combat sport or fighting style will create the complete fighter. You need striking from both hands, knees, elbows and legs (boxing, kickboxing) wrestling for takedowns and bjj for ground game.

I think you have nailed it with the comment about remaining 'calm'. No doubt how one reacts when under severe pressure is the great unknown of any form of combat. For me though I worry about Self Defense taught in a tranquil Zen like Temple and how that will translate when noise, aggression, pain & fear are introduced. There's no easy answers.

The ignorance of fighting is really shown when it comes to this argument. Fighting in the UFC is of course legit and true combat And many techniques from karate, bjj and judo is carried over to mma. But to think that a fight in ufc is like a self-defense situation on the street is false. This is very clear when you look at videos of someone attacking another person. MMA training is very effective as self-defence but you train to compete and not only to protect yourself. This is why it looks different. In a octagon where to skilled fighters standing in front of each other and trying to pick the opponent apart is different from someone being attacked out of anger where the attack is more linier and often grabbing of clothes are common.

Kick to the groin or strike to the eyes before doing the technique. My Sensei's teacher, who we refer to as "Shihan," always said "Shut down the mind." That strike will pull the opponent's focus away from what you're doing and onto his/her damaged eyes or groin.

Dear Sir, Victims are generally less trained than their opponents, so blocks or even through would do a better job instead of hitting and kicking. In my oppinion, the first move can work against smaller, but handling a stronger, taller opponent would need lifting the grabbing hand and sweeping his leg to lay him flat on the floor. As for the second move a side block of soto uke like will help more thane the elbow. especially against an popponent with longer hands. My recommendation for the lady is not to just touch the shinbones and then making the evasive movement, and running away, as properly signalled by the women. All that has been given free and with best wishes. Paul, retired instructor (age 64)

wristlocks are very difficult to pull off but they definetly have their place in any fighting system, myself after studing 5 years of hapkido i'm able to do some standing jointlcoks while the oponent does the grab and punch think but it's better to block the punch and strike, after the block and the strike you set up the wristlock, they are much more high percentege to work if you mix them with strikes. Wristlocks are very difficult to master you must train a lot !!!

the double arm grab, our school teaches a better way to deal with and maim the opponent, drop force on the middle joints (elbow joint) to bend the arms and then gouge the eyes as his head is dragged in by the momentum, if it sounds extreme i apologise i just find it more effective :)

That's a common perception. Which is why Japanese teachers of poor technical level or bad teaching methodology, get invited to teach seminars. After 43 years as a student of karate, IMHO the best teachers are those who have studied with the top Japanese teachers & now interpret those teachings to suit others. Amos Sensei has good technique, good communication skills, is not arrogant, and actually understands 'how' to teach karate. He's as good as many Japanese Sensei and better than most.

This is all about using technique, using their weight against them. Karate is a style that mostly avoids using strength to win a battle.
@Centrinario11 жыл бұрын
The point of these demos is to emphasize and breakdown self defense techniques, so things are done very slowly and are aimed at complete beginners. If they showed it full speed, some people wouldn't be able to keep up with the specifics. Every single martial art has very slow demos to break down the moves. The point of the video is not to simulate live combat. If you learn these techniques to the extent that you can do them at full speed, they will serve you well in actual self defense.

It would actually, it all depends on the person whether or not they are calm enough to remember what they learn at their martial arts class and be able to do it unconsciously. Besides, what if they actually knew how to fight and saw that punch coming? What if you are fighting more than one person? This move does actually work especially to disarm opponent with weapon. I see your point though, almost all street fight you see you wouldn't see people doing this so therefore it won't be as realistic

My father started to learn Karate while he was living in Hawaii, and when I was younger I started lessons but the things we learned just weren't practical and they didn't teach much about discipline and the other charter trait you usually associate with the art. So he pulled me out of that class determined to find me a better school then we moved to the middle of no where with no martial arts of any kind. So that's were my training ended... I would like to find a good place to learn still though.

If you can find Seido [what I do] that's a good traditional style. It's also derived from Kyokushin-so even though it's softened a little [we don't fully extend-to protect the joints and are more inclusive-so we get a lot more women] the training's tough/otherwise largely identical to Kyokushin. It's also a mix of Goju Ryu-what the Miyagi character teaches in the Karate Kid. So I believe it has all the elements you're looking for. You have to Oss everyone, line up according to rank and greet black belts and above by their grade; so it has that weird Eastern mix of militarism and spirituality that I think you're referring too, along with tough workouts and press-ups on your front two knuckles.
