SedgeTool is all about woodworking and having a great time doing it. SedgeTool is Brian “Sedge” Sedgeley who brings 30 years of woodworking experience and tons of energy to the team. Derick “Big D” Clements who has NO CLUE about woodworking but is ready to learn. Chris "cameraman" Seibert who films it all! If you want to have a good time and learn something about woodworking, then you’ve come to the right place.
All views and opinions expressed during SedgeTool are explicitly those of SedgeTool. Nearly no change in video quality or format from first to last video. When “knowSedge” and experience is pouring out from start to finish, there’s no need for fancy transitions, epic sounds or short clips from The Office. What a pleasure to watch you guys. ❤️ Shortly the apprentice has become the Master. 😄

I am doing a major overhaul to my shop this spring. One thing I do is…Every box, drawer, tool, whatever gets a number. I keep a notebook that has numbers say 1 through 50 or whatever. Everything that is in box/drawer #1 or 5 or 15, whatever is written down next to that number. If I have a tool that is in a bin, box or drawer I can easily find it and not go searching through every box, bin, etc… I use it mainly for the items or tools I don’t use very often.

The starboard on the bottom of lumber storage is a great idea! & My additional shop tip: Friday burn pile! or Sundays. We burn all kinds of extra scrap as it just becomes too much clutter! Sure it's nice to save some choice pieces, yet...

Funny you posted this while I'm doing a major overhaul of my shop. Built wall and base cabinets with systainers in mind. Snow and weather put me behind, but should be ready to put the work space back together next weekend. Cool video, I'm going to implement some of your tips as I get reorganized.

I love an organized shop. Mine... is NOT! But I am working on it. It's coming along. I am currently decluttering! It's great seeing your shop and how organized it is. Ya know... a great video would be to go to somoene else's shop and help them get super organized. I wonder if you have a friend like that 🤔

Very good stuff. I like to think about Da Vinc's Vitruvian Man when organizing things in my shop. Most used stuff within arms reach, etc. Then when I'm doing cabinets, I bring out the alignment jigs for doing LR32 work, For molding I bring out the supports to mount on top of my MFT/3 for my miter saw.. etc. Each of these major functions may or may not need special tools to support those tasks. If they do, I bring out the storage containers that have the specialized tools in them for that function. Even my most used tools may be mounted to a portable cabinet, they are mounted in such a way that they can be picked up quickly and not for display like they were in a museum.

My current shop tweak is an outdoor shed just outside of the garage to hold all of the supplies that I bought for various jobs. Electrical boxes, pipe nipples, extra Schluter waterproofing supplies, and everything like that. They were taking over my shop, but I didn't want to get rid of all of that stuff because I'm going to need it on the next job. It's definitely a work in process. I've created a couple of videos showing the chaotic state that I'm currently working in. Hopefully in the next couple of months I'll have a shop organized more like yours. Keep up the awesome videos. I'm learning so much from watching.

For the magnets, I found that getting large nail plates for protecting plumbing is nice hack. I nail or screw them to the framing members in my shop (I have no drywall) so that I can stick my parts tray or other magnetic thing to the walls. I also drilled rarer earth magnets into my push sticks/blocks so that I can stick them to the front of the table saw.

Great video! I use Kaisen Foam in Systainers, Combi's, and Sortainers to assemble kits. That way I have all the tools and supplies in one place. I am amazed at the hobbiests and trades that revel in chaos.

Sad to have to suggest this - but when you organise, keep a written inventory (photos, serial numbers) and make sure it tallies with your home insurance. That way, when you get a break-in and theft it will be easier to deal with the insurance company.
