This video covers some quick tips on fishing small stillwaters in summer, and features my top 10 flies / patterns, with your chance to win 2 boxes of them.
I found it really hard to set a top 10, but really this is just 10 great choices which bag you a lot of fish in summer. Everyone has their own preference, and this is simply mine.
I have put together 2 boxes with all the flies shown as well as some additional dry flies, buzzers, cats whiskers and more.
To be in with a chance of winning just make sure you have subscribed to the channel, and drop me a comment.
I hope you enjoyed the video, and please comment and subscribe to get future updates.
Take care
Chris

Just looking to get back fly fishing again and so refreshing to see someone local covering places etc I know ( remember Kinross when it was Heatheryford ). Plus in the 80s advise like yours wasn’t about just Troutfisher magazine articles about Rutland etc . Keep up the great work and those 10 flies are on my shopping list. Mainly enjoying chasing wild brownies at Whiteadder but will try other places now .

Another fantastic video. Very informative. I, ve been waiting patiently for your next instalment! Top pattern for me so far this summer has to be the Red Holo Diawl Bach on the dropper. Weighted Damsel as point fly for those slightly deeper fish and Fab or booby for those fish just subsurface. Deadly. Thanks again and keep those vids coming my friend. All the best.

I think with the cormorant you have pretty much nailed the top 10.. Because daddies are so prolific at this time of the year i would suggest "klink n dink " with a natural or foam daddy as the Klink (also could be a klinkhammer) with a size 16 cruncher or buzzer as the dink tied on the bend of the suspender fly, fished static with an occasional long draw ... another very enjoyable vid 👍

Cheers Martin! I’m sure that scientists have proved that based on their eye they can see colour. For me from a distance it will be more about silhouette where black stands out a mile or Olive is more subtle. When they get close that’s where I feel colour will play a part, but not as much as a lot of people believe. Size & shape are key, as well as overall colour, but ribs / cheeks etc in my opinion are more to catch the anglers! 👍🏻🎣

Great video. How do you decide what to start with. Can you do a video on how to tie droppers, always have tangles Cheers Phil
@TheTroutFlyFisherman
@TheTroutFlyFisherman 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Phil! Basically I’ll take an educated guess, but also I always set up 2 rods, even on the boat. So I tend to have a washing line on one, usually on midge tip at this time of year, and either a floater with dries or sinking line depending on if I see any fish on arrival, or get an idea if they are higher or lower in the water from the staff. Fly wise, I will tend to start with a mix of crunchers / hoppers, and go to ptn / Diawl Bach’s / hares ear in smaller sizes if changing up. Always love to fish a damsel in the margins wherever I go, with the good old snatcher on the dropper. I tend just to mix it up each trip to be honest, they will all catch and it’s more about sussing out the depth they are feeding I find. No worries, will try to get a video done on that soon 👍🏻

What weight rods are you using for your summer fishing on small stillwaters? And I fish a relatively small stillwater around 8ft deep what leader length would you recommend for a two fly cast? Please.
@TheTroutFlyFisherman
@TheTroutFlyFisherman 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor, I mainly use a 6 weight if a bit of wind, and 5 weight if not. I do set up the 7 weight for using deep sinking lines, and generally set up 2 rods every trip, just to save time. 8ft is shallow, but I would probably fish a 15ft leader with a buoyant fly on point, with 7.5 ft to dropper. Just let you fish nice and slow through the water. Otherwise I would drop to a single fly otherwise adjusting the length to suit the speed you will be retrieving. 👍🏻

@@TheTroutFlyFisherman A couple of quick queries if I may. Firstly, on your droppers, do you knot direct to the leader or do you use micro rings? Secondly, do you have your leader setups on pre-prepared rigs or do you tie up at the bank?
@TheTroutFlyFisherman
@TheTroutFlyFisherman 4 жыл бұрын
John Owen - Hi John, I always knot directly to leader with a triple surgeons knot, and always make up pre-prepared rigs now, for multiple set ups in different lengths and for different set ups like washing line / straight line / 2 flies / bung / sinking line. Never used to, but since starting filming it makes it so much easier. I made up a LOT of rigs, and now just top up what I use after each outing. It’s working a treat. Cheers, Chris

@@TheTroutFlyFisherman thanks for your reply. I went fishing on Friday and blanked. Fish were up in the water, cruising with dorsel fin showing but not breaking the water surface. They would then dive down to deeper water, clarity wasn't good so couldn't see what they were doing, after which they would return to their cruising position a few inches from the surface. I tried and failed, could i ask what you would have tried in this situation? Thanks, Joe
@TheTroutFlyFisherman
@TheTroutFlyFisherman 4 жыл бұрын
Joseph Nicholson - Hi Joseph, with them being close to the surface, I would be on the washing line on a floater, using a small foam emerging buzzer or foam caddis on the point, and 2 small nymphs on the droppers. The point fly will tend to go under and stay just below the surface, and could tempt them, and the 2 nymphs sitting a little deeper to cover the levels. That would be my first go to, then id just go for unweighted nymphs if no joy, then a beaded nymph on point if still no joy to cover more levels. Always worth throwing out a dry to try to tempt them too, but I’m guessing you tried that. If they wasn’t working, a booby on the point and damsel on dropper to see if they attack something bigger in the area they are showing. Then maybe a dry dropper to see if they want something small and static. Then I would just laugh that the fish won and I’ve tried enough! 😂👍🏻
