Top Ten Announcers in Fighting Games

The characters on the screen are always important in fighting games, but what about the ones that we don’t see? The announcers in fighting games need more appreciation, since without them, we may not know what round it is, when it’s time to fight, or who wins and loses. Plus, they help make the games even more memorable with their voices lines that go beyond telling us the basics. So, for this video, I’m looking at the announcers who make our fighting game experience even grander. Who gives us lines more quotable than the attack names. Let’s go for broke!

To me, the Killer Instinct announcer's most iconic line is "C-c-c-combo breaker!" I also think Mortal Kombat really could have played up a theme and had every game be announced by their main villain. Would have been interesting and given each game a distinct voice going into it.

@@damianateiro I think only the pitch is modified to make Shao Khan's voice sound deeper. KI's announcer has his voice completly distorted. I don't know how they did in the 2013 version, but in the original game the announcer's lines were voiced by a programmer and then heavily edited.

The announcer for Super Smash Bros. Brawl is Pat Cashman who is also the announcer in Bill Nye the Science Guy. Both Cashman and Nye met while working on the Seattle based sketch comedy show Almost Live!

Kof 98 announcer was dope. The VA is Harumi Ikoma, the OG voice of Yuri and King n she still voices King until this day. She also did the announcer of KOF XI, too. I just love how loud she was in 98'... Almost about pop your eardrums w the "Ready!? GO!" Simple, but yet effective.

I don’t know what surprises me more. The fact that the legendary Dan Green was an announcer for a fighting game. Or the fact that I didn’t recognize him.

He definitely uses a different voice from his standard deep voices. I could usually identify him in other 4Kids anime, like how his Professor Birch and Johnny from One Piece voices were very similar to Yami Yugi, but he's got a slightly different emphasis on his words here. I can hear it after being told it's Dan Green, but before, I didn't even notice.

One of my personal favorite fighting game announcers is Weird Al in the Billy and Mandy game and the announcer from Godzilla Save The Earth the first one is it's because it's freaking Weird Al, you can't hate that the second one, he just has that deep voice perfect for giant monsters, and the way he says "Godzilla 2000" and "Mechagodzilla 3" is something I constantly think about and this one's random, but I really hope Tom Kenny gets to use his Powerpuff Girls Narrator voice for a fighting game announcer, I think that would be so weird yet epic

Man I wish you talked more about the Super Smash Bros ultimate announcer in the character select screen. The way he says each characters name differently is so great. Some characters have a weight of respect, some are full hype. The best are the ones said with a sense of intrigue, like he's surprised about that character's presence, but curious as to what will happen.

Your list is similar to mine but here's some minor differences: 1. For Blazblue I prefer the announcer in Continum Shift more than Central Fiction. 2. In Skullgirls I prefer the female announcer, she's more energetic and has more funny lines. I remember once I was playing Skullgirls with my brother then my mom walked in and asked us to help her in something, so we paused the game only to hear the female announcer say: "MOM, I'M PLAYING VIDEO GAMES!!!", we laughed for how funny and perfectly timed it was.

Wow I never really gave it that much thought up until now on how Alpha 3’s VA really emphasizing the “0” during the Continue Screen countdown could be a potential easter egg referring to the Alpha series being called “Zero” in Japan. Man, this is just another reason why Alpha 3 will always be my favorite in the SF series.

My all time favorite announcer is Tekken 3's, he sounded so cool and edgy, Tekken 8's trailer announcer is also pretty good, if they incorporate him in the final game it might beat Tekken 3 one. Shao Kahn is also a great announcer and once I learned/realized it was Shao Kahn the announcer I learned to appreciate it even more.

I have a true hidden gem announcer: the Fighters Destiny announcer! The guy was SO hype all the time, specially when starting a match...he would often yell "GET REEEEEADDYYYYYYYY!!!" The announcers I REALLY like that fly under the radar for MOST people is the announcer in "Gundam Assualt Battle 2" and the announcer on a game called "Fighter's Destiny". They would speak mid match depending on what was happening. If someone did an inblockable move in Hundam Assualt Battle 2, the announcer would yell "YOU CAN'T DEFEND!" And if someone did an unblockable move in Fighter's Destiny, the announcer would yell "WATCH OUT! MOVE!" The announcers that spoke as the fights were happening were always favored by me over the announcers that would pretty much just speak when a round or match was over. And of COURSE the announcer for "Capcom VS SNK 2" is ICONIC. Just listening to him talk on the character select with the music is enough.

The Soul Calibur and Smash Brother's announcers would definitely be my top 2. Not sure which version I would use for each, probably Brawl's Smash announcer, but Soul Calibur has some stiff announcer competition as mentioned in the video.
