I can confirm as a daily commuter on my 2001 SV650 K1 that the bike is truly worthy of such praise, the bike has grown on me over two years and I m not bored of it by a long way. It inspires great confidence and handles superbly. Suzuki struck gold. Any new rider look no further start on a V twin the engine braking is sublime and very handy too ... barely need to hit the brakes and it teaches good.throttle control

@@rensgreuter8152 Oh my god, I just realised what I posted... Youre absolutely correct... I dont know why I posted that now. I just had a flick through the video and the ONLY thing I can think of, is that there isd both teh 500 and 400 in there, so I must have got confused? Maybe I was few drinks in and didnt pay attention to the video and simply got conused when I read CB500 and saw the CB400 part of the video I dont know? But yeah, you are absolutely correct and I saw that instantly. Having onwed the 500 and currently own and am restoring a 400/4 SF , I am quite disgusted that I made such a remedial error, but hey ho!

I think the Honda BROS 400 should have made the list. They were importing loads of them in the late 90s and early 2000s. Low price, low mileage, low insurance cost, stylish and extremely reliable. A pretty underrated bike.

As someone who's training as a bike instructor alot of these snippets of road rides distress me Haha there one somewhere where I'd be yelling at a student "cancel that f#&king indicator!" Amazing how much you spot when your learning to official dsa standards. Ever after ten years on big bikes I learn somthing most sessions/lessons

I enjoyed this video. I had an accident in 2012 and I stopped riding bikes as Iwas in a wheelchair, I then moved to Trikes ( Still have a VW1600 trike ) but I have just got back onto bikes and I have a CB400, GSX600F ( only ridden 3 times and now selling it cos I cannot get used to it - but I am also probably swapping it for an ER500 ) and a Fazer 600. I thought I would never ride small bikes again, but here we are. I sold my Harley Trike a few months ago and to this day, I wished I just converted it back to a bike instead. But hey ho. The CB400 is by far, the most fun bike I have had in years. Its the 400/4 SuperFour and its got an exhaust that makes it sound like an F1 car and it is so much exitement to ride, that IO almost always cannot get off the bike for a few minutes as I have to wait for my hard on to subside ( Thats kind of true ).

I used to do London courier work on the Yamaha 600 up till the mid 90's. Solid workhorse. The only way to damage one is to crash it hard. That engine would do 120 mph to Manchester and back or Plymouth and back often. Being screamed all day every day for year after year. The perfect tool bike.

I picked up a 2008 gs500f when my sister super cheap when she wanted to get her license. well, she ended up not going through with it and I got saddled with the bike and I can say its been a joy to ride. the massive stiff boat anchor frame and wollowey suspension make for an interesting ride. I run canyons and I can pin this thing and not end up in jail. the engine is a tiny wheezy little thing that struggles to climb hills at the speed limit and won't accelerate past 70mph on the flat. but I swear they designed this bike to service even the most neglectful owners, its got tons of oil copasity massive fuel tank, and an extensive range over 250 miles if ridden carefully. but it is also a serious garbage machine to work on complicated fuel line system for a remote petcock and fugly vacuum system for that petcock means that if you get a vacuum leak you lose fuel flow. removing the fuel tank is a involved process of 4 different fuel lines and vents with the whole global petcock actuated by a screwdriver that has to be sneaked in from the opposite side of the bike that is also blocked by a vent boss, god forbid you've got 20lbs of fuel in the tank while you are trying to do this, or you are gonna end up with some bruised fingers. the forums about this bike are false and unhelpful. espicly the jetting charts, the bike came with pair so it injects air into the exhaust to burn up all the unburnt gas before it leaves the bike but the problem its that it makes it impossible to jet correctly. the 130 section rear tire makes the bike feel light balanced and clickable, but its hard to find rubber and what is out there is mini adventure tires for funky Chinese bikes, pereli used to make a sport tire for this but they are hard to find, and expensive(like more than I paid for the bike). the carbuerators are fine but stock they came with there float height to low making the choke not work leading to very laboured starting, set it right and don't worry about jetting and it will be golden. but the genuine replacement seals for the float bowls are about 5% too small in every dimension making them want to leap out of the grove when you are trying to resemble them. after my spirited rides the single front disk is black and blue, I don't brake that much but it's just a tiny single disk trying to stop a 420+ lb bike. no under seat storage it's just open gaps around the splash guard, so maybe tape in a ziplock bag under the seat for your registration. changing or cleaning the air filter nesetates removeingn the gas tank witch wouldn't be problem if it wasn't such a fight. no gas gauge just go off milge and whenever you hit reserve. the swing arm is extremely thin and the chain adjuster will bend and rip their way inside if you launch with rpm. the flywheel weighs about the same as the space shuttle, it revs like its posesed lazely floating around the rpm range, that mutch rotating mass makes the rear tire chirp if you let the clutch out too quickly after down shifting. the rear brake is the same as off the 80'2 gsx750r its massive and will lock up the rear weel if you look at it funny. they did not leave enough space between the frame and the airbox so running the fuel lines is a case of just mashing it in there and hoping you didn't kink it. no fuel gauge just go off of milage and when you hit reserve. the exhaust is so close to the footpeg that you end up hitting it with your heal a lot, the footpegs are placed like mid controls on harley Davidson they are about 2 inches forward of correct. the throttle is a true 1/4 turn meaning you have to wrap your had all the way back to get it to full throttle unlide the 1/5 of most bikes or the 1/6 or scooters and r6. the amount of bone headed design decisions are staggering, you would think this was the first prototype of a bike coming right off the drawings but no in 2008 this bike was a almost 30 year old design with the basic engine going back to the gs 450's way back. this bike ain't worth it the concessions this bike made in the name of cost arent worth it. thank you for coming to my unbridled stream of consciousness about a cheap motorcycle. tldr the thin rear tire makes it fun and balanced but literally everything else lets it down. its a garbage mechiene designed by people who have never ridden or turned a wrench in their lives. its not a motorcycle but a motorcycle shaped object. just get a sv650 or anything other than this bike, it's worth the extra 500 bucks.

I've had a GS500 from 2016 to 2020, did about 60K KM on it (sold it with 125K). Though it was in very good shape, I had to replace most of the electrical components. It was a fine bike, though it was prone to rust and I had to clean it aggressively with WD40 throughout the winter to keep it in good shape (mind you, I live in the middle east and the bike was always parked under a roof and a cover). The main issue with these is the oil consumption. Sure, the higher mileage didn't help but I wasn't aggressive on the throttle, and even after riding at a pace of 100-110 KPH for 200KM, with stops to cool down the engine, it still guzzled enough oil to drop to "low" on the dipstick. In comparison, I now ride an NC700X which has well above 100K on the clock and it didn't consume a drop of oil in the 40K+ I've had it. So as they've said - good if you get one cheap, but honestly at this point a Z300/CB500F would be a better choice.

I rode a 2007 SV650S for 3 years. It is a beautiful little twin, but I found the riding position very uncomfortable. It was fast and agile, but after about 45 minutes I was aching all over. I am 5'11", I think the bike is more suited to shorter folks.

Such bullshit about the GS500, sure it's not a premium bike, but build quality it's decent, it's a very simple but well made bike. How is it that GS500's from the early 90's are still all over the place if they were made so poorly? They may be better choices but they exagerated a bit too much it's faults.

I was on the training schools Kawasaki ER-5, that is a 500cc with L plates. I think you can only ride a 500 with L plates if you are with an instructor from a driving school. Anyone correct me if i am wrong, i would appreciate your input to add to my knowledge.

Nothing to do with cc is all depends on the license your aiming for a1 a2 for full access over 24 in the uk. I work as a bike instructor in my spare time and we us mt07s for the das stuff and they have fo have L plates on by law as the rider is under training and is does not hold a valid license for the machine
