I knew there was a good reason that I bought a Honda ST1100 ... my '98 model is now almost 20 years old, has just over 180,000 km on the clock, has extensively toured Australia, and has never suffered a mechanical failure.

I own a 2012 Honda GoldWing and love every mile on it. It came down to the GoldWing or the BMW K1200LT. You can't go wrong with either for long distance riding. The Honda has a much lower cost of ownership, though.

Pan is definitely No1 even though I have not actually owned one. I have ridden a few. A 2000 reg 750 four is is close as I got from that stable and that was my favourite owned ride out of the nearly 20 I've had. I was about to buy a deauville but at the last minute drew the same conclusion as your commentary team.

Anyone who has toured seriously knows the Goldwing is king of the road. The BMW LT is really a distant second when you consider reliability and comfort. I doubt any of the bikes mentioned will do a couple hundred thousand trouble free miles like any Goldwing will. I know of one rider that logged more than 500,000 miles on his GL1800 and it was still running fine when the owner traded it in on a new Goldwing!

It's opinion. The Goldwing may be a good seller but in my opinion its too big. The video contradicts you as it states the Pan is top tourer year in year out. The Goldwing is An armchair on wheels which is great for touring but too big for anything else.

In the late 1970's I rode a Honda Gold Wing Interstate, and it was as comfortable as a bike could possibly be. Last year I picked up a BMW R1150RT and it is anything but. Although it is a great bike with many redeeming qualities, comfort is not one of them. I ride 95% of the time on Highways in British Columbia, Canada, and I always feel that a second Foot Rest, for stretching my legs while Touring, would solve everything, but I guess they must have been concentrating on other things when they designed their "Touring" R1150RT?

I owned the K1200LT and it was one of my least favorite bikes in 40 years and dozens of motorcycles owned. The tiller-like handlebars make for comfortable touring at speed, but low speed handling is like driving a front-heavy wheelbarrow. It's the only bike I had to struggle to not dump, and I'm six feet tall. If you don't mind all that, they are are very cheap on the used market.
@james-le2rs

I have one also and you are exactly right but I forced myself to keep riding it because it makes every other motorcycle a cinch I've dumped it twice both times standing still trying to put it on the side stand it rolled forward that was all it took and it was on its side I did manage to get it up both times broke my back though

I do agree with your #1 selection. Always liked ST just a touch big (and I’m >100kg) and uncomfortably hot the Pan European seems better sized how did they solve heating problems? ST , Beemer R and Concours prototypical actual “sports” tourers seldom seen here in N. America but favourite genre for lots of us and you confused me by including a great city bike and a few actually good full size touring bikes but the HD shown is not their touring model. The HD equivalent to Gold Wing would be a Road Glide or CVO. Good post but compare apples to apples not oranges.

Only problem with this video is it was made too early, before the Honda CTX1300 was launched. Problems with the CTX - Cowling fitting and side panniers not big enough for a helmet, other than that it is the most comfortable, manoeuvrable, low CoG, making it feel much lighter than it's 338kg kerb weight and it's Honda V4 engine is superb. Need a new version of this video, but I did enjoy watching it. Thanks very much

The Honda goldwing is the bar standard for cross country touring. It has all the amenities that you could ever want in a touring motorcycle. It's the best bike ive ever ridden. Now, for a Sunday cruise around town, the Harley is by far the best choice here. It's the head turner, chick digging, mean motorcycle that you want for your ego, but it's not much better than that though. Should have been goldwing at number 1, then the BMWs (k1200 then the other) then the pan euro, then the Yamaha.

The Moto Guzzi California is a cruiser not a tourer! I have an FJR 1300AE, definitely needed a comfort seat though. Great performance both touring and twisting it around the Yorkshire Dales. The fuel doesn't seem to run out and I've done over 200 miles and still plenty of fuel left. Need better tyres on so I fitted Road 5s which are superb. Also had the tourer screen fitted which is great in the rain. This programme is comparing tourers with sport tourers and cruisers, no wonder the results are confused.

For touring I want to know if its reliable, comfortable, offers good weather protection, has a good and reliable dealer network, is affordable, has power to pass, has long range, and gets good mileage. For my money I’ll keep my FJR1300 over the others that beat it out here. If I’m sport touring (which is what I do) then the Goldwing too much tourer., the Sprint too much sport., the Harley? Forget about cornering., the K1200LT? another Goldwing.., the RT underpowered. The ST1300 has the goods but just a bit too bland and slightly underpowered. And the FJR looks much better especially when you take the bags off. I’d ride either of these bikes but I’d PREFER the FJR.

"And the FJR looks much better especially when you take the bags off." Unless you have those bag/crash guards installed (pretty much a must for heavy bikes). I agree with you about the FJR. I love mine (2014 model).

I agree I own a GL 1800 as well as a K 1200 LT. I just bought an 2004 FJR 1300 this week. Rode it home up the California coast from Oceanside to Venice. Wow. Instant love. It really does have it all. Comfort incredible speed and power precise handling. Love how easily removable the bags are and this bike only has 12,000 miles on it. You can’t go wrong with Yamaha. But as far as the big tourers go I much prefer the BMW K1200LT over the gold wing which feels like a couch on wheels. BMW heated grips seat ABS brakes handling overall comfort and performance weather protection are all superior to the Honda at least for me. I’m sure cost of Honda ownership is lower. For some that is not the bottom line. They are all great bikes

Would have been useful to know the criteria by which each bike was judged. Were the percentages a measure of how well each met the criteria, or was it just a number pluck and a journo's opinion?

I think you missed a big part of this review of your top 10 reliability if you included that none of the European bikes would have made it anywhere near number 8. Even Beamers would not get up there reliability and cost of service would have put them way back in the field.

I am guessing you have not driven in Europe where roads are twisty, sklnny and gas is not cheap.. After years of Wing use, I understand that the ST and BMW give you more of the athletic feel that European and I personal[y like. If you have wide open roads,.. which go on for ever, the Wing is your steed. I’d you have varying conditions, tighter turns, and enjoy the sport feel,. I think they nailed the review..

Very old video. The pan European was dropped by all emergency services as it handles so bad the Police called it dangerous in a side wind. The FJR1300 is now used internationally by all emergency services with perhaps the exception of Germany where they take two wheels off the car and still call it a BMW

Germany recently had placed their order for FJR's as well. :) I own a 2014 FJR and love it. I'm scared of the power though, and have only started to test it out. Feels like being on a fighter jet, and very smooth.

I have a Road King I'm selling as I sick of the Dealership attitude of over charging and that I'm rich an don't care mentality. They charged me for fixing the rear tire Valve that they forgot to change when they changed it. $100.00 to put a new one in an left stranded out of town for an in cost 1 60 . 00 . I've never been on the road and not been helped out on the road. By Harley Davidson hello Honda or BMW ....it me sick Holy attitude. . Harley Davidson dealerships lost me not the bike I will advise never by one.The bike is beautiful and with dual exhaust it sound great. But a motorcycle is only as good as the service by the Dealership so don't walk Run away or carry a motorcycle shop with you and Rob a couple of banks to support a G READY salesman !!!!!!-'-----------Once twice gone ! I've owned lots of motorcycles and have only been riding 50 years, what do I know.

Simple solution. Don't deal with dealers. Deal with riders. A motorcycle is only as good as the one who owns it. No one needs a new Harley. They made a brief mistake with the Evolution engine, quickly realized their error, and went back to the standard H(undreds)-D(ollars) corporate mindset.

2003 but looking more like "Young Ones" era production values - Deauville stylish and the Cali ugly.... they must be putting lead in the water in the UK.... And even back then 2003 I would have put the FJR at 1st, St1300 2nd, St1100 3rd, Goldwing 4th (owned all but the wing still own the st1300) but here in Australia touring generally starts at 500km a day so there's a regional bias to my choices

Harley has that classic style where no other machine can come to. Bullshit, the truth is, Harley spend millions on rights, they even have rights on the sound. Harley survived because of the second world war, the Hells Angels and the 4 big Japanese brands who pulled Harley financially out of the shit more then once. The Japanse brands have more respect for Harley then Harley riders have for them. Harley rider have to bow for every Japanse bike on the road, their beloved brand is still on the road thanks to the Japanese. If you want a real American Dream on 2 wheels, buy an Indian. They where far superior to Harley. But also far more expensive. Before the Harley fanboys start ranting and hating: i don't hate Harley, but i see it as it is. No more, no less. But is do hate that myth making around this brand. A quality product does not need that, should not want that.

Let’s take a moments silence for those dumb enough to pick a BMW or Triumph over Honda or Yamaha. The Harley is fair enough, but today it’s quite obvious that the best tourer currently is the Indian Roadmaster Elite, wich is basically a Goldwing with better performance than any other Touring, Cruiser, Muscle, and even Street bikes or naked bikes. Also it looks so classic yet so modern. And that one tops the Goldwing. And it’s funny how they only had 4 actuall touring bikes. Both Hondas and both BMWs wich nobody likes.

I think the biggest problem with this ranking is the title. It should be "sport tourers" because they ranked them based on performance and touring. After EACH GUY saying that the Gold Wing is the number one touring bike, they don't even rank it in the top 5! ??? Again, change the title to include "sport-bike aspirations" and then the ranking makes more sense. BTW: My BMW riding friends would all take a high-mileage boxer over the K-series for reliability and low-cost of ownership. BMW-R in the top 3 is not a surprise. BMW-K in the top-5 is a surprise. Just my 2 cents.

The BMW's have left riders broke down with rear drive problems, the ST1300 weaves in cross wind,, BMW is expensive to maintain, the Harley's are up to 107 c,i. And will have increased performance, the best bike for touring two up is the Goldwing,

The Pan at number one? The Dutch police was happy to get rid of them and turn back to BMW. The reasons: poor handeling, poor performance when cold, vibrations and bad handling in speeds above 180 km, less reliable and higher maintenance cost compare to the BMW K-1100, K-1200 and R-1150. But the Pan is a lot cheaper to buy. A other thing for the police is that BMW makes "p" versions of their bikes. The p stands for Polizei, german for police. This bike have more power and more powerfull electrics and are easy to build in your police equipment, or BMW does that for you. The Pan European is not a police bike so had to adapted for this duty which bring extra costs which maken him still cheaper to buy then the BMW, but not when you calculate the maintenance cost in the average 4 years of police service. At the end it turn out BMW was cheaper, more reliable and better fitted for the job as police motorcycle.

BMW being cheaper to maintain than a Honda? That contradicts everything I have ever heard, including testimony from my BMW bike owning friends. The guy I bought my ST 1300 from walked into a BMW dealership with cash in hand to buy a 1200LT. After hearing what routine maintenance would cost, he walked out, and bought the ST 1300 and never had any issues. Regarding handling issues? I have been riding motorcycles for 50 years. I have had my 1300 way faster than is ever needed and it is rock solid. Speedo accuracy is horrible though. I will give you that.

Why is buying a new bike so hard? And worse, its made harder by these 'experts' When I was in my 20's I had a gsx1400. Now I'm 30 and have arthritic knees and a daughter so I want a sporty sports tourer. I thought I wanted a triumph sprint, now I think I should just buy some new slippers and become depressed so I can be an 'expert'
