Extremely useful and well presented thanks. Will be practicing all of this before my Aitutaki trip in April for bones and GTs

I remember watching this demo at the European Sportfishing Show at the UWE in Bristol. I bought a copy of your GT book that day. What I didn't notice at the time was that you you have developed the habit of lifting your left foot on the final forward cast, to avoid trapping the fly line that's lying on the skiff deck. If there's one way to shorten your cast it's by standing on your fly line, so I guess this a sub-conscious movement for you now, probably born out of experience. Thanks again for the tutorial.

Hi Steve! Thanks for the lovely comment and I have to say I had not noticed the left foot! 😄 I suspect you are right!

Great demonstration. What about the use of a stripping basket or other line management technique
@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pol! I have to say I don’t use a stripping basket as a lot of my fishing is wading in the surf line and I have found them a hindrance rather than a help… also struggle with baggage allowances on small aircraft. I think they certainly have their place on a skiff or fixed position though….

best casting video for flats I've seen! .......... quick question though...... I know ultimately you should practice with a leader and fly, but is it detrimental to get all the casts down well without the leader and fly?

@@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing Thanks for the reply....... that's what I have been doing...... but instead of yarn, I take flies that didn't turn out too well and clip it off at the bend! lol
@aperson11865 жыл бұрын
@@AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing I usually cut the hook off a common fly that I used on the flats. It not only casts better, but it lets you know how your leader/tippet/line will really feel. Plus, if you mess up...the fly to the back of the head teaches you too.

Okay....all these years and I just realized why trout fisherman look at me funny when I am casting over a pond. I am a flats fisherman and this is how I have always cast a rod. Never realized this was a saltwater thing. lol
