Koontz's stuff from the mid-80s to the mid-90s are almost always great. I enjoyed LIFE EXPECTANCY quite a bit and INNOCENCE was good, in my opinion. I didn't care at all for THE CITY and I have yet to read ASHLEY BELL. I read THE SILENT CORNER and it was different for Koontz. It was kind of like Koontz trying to do THE X-FILES government conspiracy and I actually look forward to the second book. For me, Koontz is hit or miss. Sometimes he's great and sometimes he's awful.
@EdwardLorn
@EdwardLorn 6 жыл бұрын
See, that X-files bit you mentioned, Koontz has been doing that his entire career. Over half of his books have some kind of government coverup/conspiracy. Off the top of my head, I can only count five books that don't have the government-coverup plot. Especially those books in the 80s and 90s. All of them have some kind of conspiracy story in them.

One more thing. In my country (Poland) some of Koont'z books titles are stragely translated. f.ex. Seize The Night is "Korzystaj z nocy" ("Use The Night"), "Phantoms" are "Odwieczny wróg" - Ancient Enemy - the writing on the wall in one of buildings in the book, "The Twighlight Eyes: is "Inwazja" ("Invasion"), "The Watchers" are "Opiekunowie" ("The Caretakers") "Lightning" is "Grom" (Bolt) or "Anioł stróż" ("Guardian Angel"). "Fear Nothing" has the titles: Więzień ciemności (Prisoner of the Darkness), Zabójca strachu ("Fear's Killer") and Oszukać strach (Mislead The Fear).

Koontz is great, but the “samey” aspect of his writing can get tedious. In recent decades, he’s tried to start series fiction and I haven’t liked any of it. Some of my favorites (in no order) are Phantoms, False Memory, Shattered, The Voice of the Night, Sole Survivor, Watchers, and Lightning. I haven’t read Koontz in at least 20 years, but he is an exceptionally skilled suspense writer and you always know what you’re going to get.

The Bad Place is my second favorite Dean Koonts book. Phantoms is my favorite and my first. I was so mind blown by it that it automatically became my favorite. But the Bad Place influenced my version Of Father Time in my Universe. Like heavily. The way that Father Time uses his powers is similar to how Dean Koonts used Teleportation. I read lots of Koontz books in my early teens, then in Polish because I didn't know English yet (I was lucky to find tons of good, scarry stuff in my tiny local library in the little town where I'm from, that was how I also got to know King, Barker, Rice etc.) I most fondly remember "The Bad Place" and "Phantoms" and reread them later in English, having lots of fun. (Yeah, that bad guy had four of something but no something else hahahaha, love early Koontz for those wild ideas.) There are quite a few of his books that I remember enjoying a lot as a kid, but I don't know their titles. I didn't even know the original titles back then so that makes it harder to remember. There are 3 books in particular that I would like to find again but I only remember certain themes. If somebody could help me with the titles I will be very grateful. 1. A woman with traumatic past has (partial?) amnesia. Has visions of something shiny moving in the darkness. Then the vision gets clearer and it turns out to be light reflected from an axe waving like a pendulum. 2. The main bad guy is actually two guys - twins, who were raised up in a way that they though they were one person. (When they had sex with each other they treated it as an act of masturbation 😁😁) 3. The bad guy in this Koontz novel is able to stop the time so that everything comes to a halt and stays still but he is able to move and, for example, kill people while they are frozen between one moment and the next. He can also do stuff with the force of his mind, is super strong, ejaculates while inflicting violence etc. etc. 🙂 Anybody can help?

I read Twilight Eyes twice. The first time I read it was euphoric. So I reread it months later felt the buzz just as intense as the first time even though I knew what was going to happen. Something about that book. I agree with you on Koontz. I feel his writing started to repeat itself about the same time he took the R. out of his name. Although I enjoyed The Taking despite the ending. I guess it was timing with what was going on in my life etc. Not with religion but well its not important. Great videos I enjoy your lists. Thanks.

Thanks for your comments man! I am right with you on losing interest in what Dean Koontz has written over the last twenty years or so. I have put him in the "light reading" category of my reading list. I can finish his books in a day, enjoy them for what they are, and move on without any serious thought. Mr. Koontz wasn't always like that though, as you have noted. My number one favorite by far is INTENSITY! The tension from page one just increases until you don't know whether to keep reading or give up. Right on the edge of repetitive Koontz and great ideas Koontz are two books I will reread forever. Siege The Night and Fear Nothing have a lot of the elements of INTENSITY with the heart that will become such a part of his future novels and a part of why I don't buy his books anymore. Strangers! I love this book! Dean Koontz is a great writer. I love huge stories with many characters. He nailed it! OK, that is just four. I will split it in half and say I like the early novels better than the latter.

I used to like Koontz a lot, but somehow developed an aversion to him. The man's a bit insane, which can be a good thing, but in his case it works against him. He obsessively writes the same stuff over and over. Fully agree about Voice of the Night, though -- that was one of my favorite books as a kid. I haven't re-read it in years, but I probably should. Oh yes!! He was the best English teacher, the one everyone wanted, funny and entertaining . Being funny, to a teenager, is of course more important than learning anything. One of his books, written under a name that I can’t remember, took place at the racetrack back in Grantville. He left part way though my 11th grade (I had had him all of 10th grade) to take up writing full time. Seems to have worked out financially better than being a teacher in Pennsylvania till retirement!!

Thanks for the video. Some great insight and some of his books back in the early 90's were really fun as far as NYT best seller pop culture reading goes. I loved all the books in your top 5 and I'm a big ODD fan. Here's a math test in word problem form for everyone who reads these NYTBS writers and wonders why they start to get repetitive... Start after a writer's first 4-5 hits... then make a list of all the books that come out, add up all the pages, divide by the total number of days, (hours if you really want a laugh) and then try to figure out how many pages every - single - day that writer would have to put out to have x number of books published in y amount of time over say a 20 year period. Now, what's the catch? If you're not a professional writer yourself, ask someone who is to explain the numbers and you will have your answer as to why the books get repetitive.

Thanks Edward, really enjoying your channel. i know this would add work, but if you could do a high level book synopsys that would be very cool. otherwise I have to keep pausing your video and looking up the books to see plot and then returning to your video. of course I can do the work too...but if it's not too much work for you to do a quick read of the dust jacket (or back) that would be awesome sauce!

I'd really love a top 10 of your own books.. but would that be too peculiar for you to do? I mean I paint, and if I had to rank my paintings I'd feel disloyal to those I leave out and kinda up myself for those I include so if that's the same for writing please ignore my silly request and hope it doesn't annoy you. Thanks for this fab video, I've a few to check out, I read/listen to Koontz when I want a kind of safe for work horror? That's not quite right, like a wholesome one or one you might get from your gran or a polite person who knows you like horror. I never find his books scary and more cutesy but still fun and want to find out what happens

You should read the Afterward in Lightning. It is only my second Koontz read because the first Phantoms let me down. However, Lightning was great and he talks about (a possible) reason why he wrote the same book over and over: his publishers.

Have you read Robert McCammon? Everyone raves about Swan Song, which is great. But The Border, which is a newer one (aliens) is awesome. I never could get into Koontz. I find it the same formula and so predictable.

I also gave up on him a long time ago. My favourite Koontz book though has always been the very first one I read, Lightning. That was a real revelation to me at age 11 or so. I kept looking to find that same feeling in other books by him that I read but, it never really came to me the same way again. I did love that book at the time though.

+XxStonedKillerxX refresh my memory. MODNIGHT is about the town taken over by a computer, right? I don't remember much about that one, but I also don't recall him ever writing another book like TWILIGHT EYES.
@XxStonedKillerxX
@XxStonedKillerxX 6 жыл бұрын
Well in Midnight there are characters (and a dog) trapped in a town overrun by computer chip implanted individuals capable of turning into beasts that kill indiscriminately. In Twilight Eyes, there are characters (and a dog) who travel to a town overrun by Goblins. Its a bit of a stretch, but it just mildly annoys me.
@EdwardLorn
@EdwardLorn 6 жыл бұрын
+XxStonedKillerxX there's a dog in TWILIGHT EYES? I really need to reread that because I don't recall a dog in that one. I also don't remember them going to a town. I remember the narrator and his girl hunting down the goblin headquarters, but the entire front half of the book is in the carnival, right?
@EdwardLorn
@EdwardLorn 6 жыл бұрын
+XxStonedKillerxX yeah, Wikipedia doesn't mention a dog, but you're right about the small town. It's a small mining town in PA. You sure you're not thinking about one of the Christopher Snow books? Like SEIQZE THE NIGHT or FEAR NOTHING? Because those have a dog and towns overrun by baddies.
@XxStonedKillerxX
@XxStonedKillerxX 6 жыл бұрын
Yea the dogs name is Growler, he belongs to the old man they meet in Yondtstown (I think thats how its spelled) the guy who can smell the Goblins. But yes, most of the book is with the Carnival.

I have only read two Dean Koontz novels so far, which is Watchers and Lightning and I already thought they were very similar, though I enjoyed them anyways, I liked more Watchers than Lightning. I felt like in Lightning there were too many pages going on just describing the weapons and food for some reason. Also every character is rich and perfect....

have you read any of his 70's stuff that is out of print like The Chase for example? i think that's the title? i have a bunch of his books as well man but i've only read a couple of them to be honest, well the ones i have read and finished are and in no order is The House of thunder i was given that in my teens i think and i read it when i was in my 30's first the 1st time and i liked it up until the ending which i think ruined the book for me, Strangers is my favorite of his so much so that i lent it to a friend at work about a year or so ago. i was in high school when i read that, i was friends with a girl who was a huge fan of his work i dunno if she still is but this was (1996) Independence Day came out that summer and that fall in school she would not tell me the plot only as she felt it would ruin the story and honestly i would have read it anyways, but she said you know independence day i said yeah i went and saw it and i had in fact. it's a bit like that a little bit is how she described it to me, well for those who haven't read it no it's not just like that film but it does have a surprise ending. Soul Survivor i fucking loved man i read that when it first came out and i than gave it to my mom to read who never reads him and she loved it too i even loved the tv movie as well. i think those are the ones i've read i need to look his books up to make sure.
