1,000s of people around the world have rediscovered board games this year. It has been a very good year for board games.

The trouble is there’s something like 5000 games coming out each year, and most channels cover probably about 30/40 of those between them. I’m sure it’s been a fantastic year for games just as any other year, but a lot of the true gems are still buried beneath the inevitable hype train. I’m looking forward to finding out what those buried gems are!

Oh naturally we can't review them all, not even the Dice Tower can. I do as many as I can but as a hobbyist I can only go so far. And Covid only made things worse as all those beautiful conventions I had to miss out on. I can only hope they resume in 2021 post vaccination period.
@trunghoang-jummyegg4 жыл бұрын
i keep hearing that there are 3000-5000 games coming out each year. But i don't think this is accurate at all. I checked the number of RANKED game here: github.com/beefsack/bgg-ranking-historicals/tree/7f94a777828380230c69750644c0ff6ceb531ce9 and there are less than 20k games that are ranked. Sure, if you count every games including those are not ranked, you might get to 5000, but it is almost impossible to buy a game that's not ranked on BGG. Realistically, i think there are ~1000 new games every year, and out of those ~1000, less than 250 that are worth trying (which is still a lot)

My favourites of the year, I did include 3 games that technically counts as 2019 for some, but given that I ordered all three of these at the first available opportunity and did not receive them until far into 2020 I count them as 2020 games in my own head. I agree that 2020 so far doesn't look like the best year for gaming. I do have a couple of games on my radar that could end up on a revised list, but at least a couple will probably not be available in stores here until sometime in 2021... and so the circle continues... 1) Marco Polo 2 (Received my copy May 2020) Voyages of Marco Polo was already among my favourites and this one fixed things I did not realized needed fixing. 2) Maracaibo (Received my copy in March 2020) The ultimate Pfister game, it takes the best parts from his previous designs and just makes for an excellent experience. 3) It's a Wonderful World (Received my copy October 2020) Already one of my most played games of all time, this has become my go-to solo, and I can't wait to play it with others. 4) Calico Another game that really has excelled for me solo and become one of my most played of all time, look forward to finally playing it with others. 5) Viscounts of the West Kingdom Only tried it out solo so far, but excellent game. Paladins is still my favourite of the series, but I really do enjoy this one, and I appreciate how low maintenance the solo is on this one. 6) The Isle of Cats I love drafting, I love tile laying, I love cats, very satisfying. 7) Tang Garden I even painted the minis, and I don't tend to have many games with minis in them. Gorgeous game, so visually satisfying to see the garden form over the course of the game.

Thanks as a new board gamer this gives me a few games to look at in 2021 alongside all the games I've already got on order... From a new player perspective I personally found TMB, Gloomhaven JOTL, Spirit Island and Merv to be my favourites from my initial gaming splurge. I have got Under Falling Skies, yes it's excellent and a great balance of everything Vs the research track. I've been kind of spreading out to see what I like and not relying too much on reviewers scores but the content of the review. I initially really disliked Euro Games as they tended to have me over optimising and breaking games down in my head (so stops being fun and Scythe fell into this trap for me) so I made the error of disregarding them. So happy I overcame this flawed opinion and bought Merv. Merv is absolute genius mechanically and has clearly been play tested and fine tuned to death.. it really is that clever and the game although "pretty" it's clear that it's a game first and foremost and I suspect the core mechanics may find their way into other games. Really looking forward to playing this against real people in 2021. My takeaway for the latter half 2020 has been to get a variety of games.. as a new gamer I fell into the next big thing hype train as I simply didn't know any better. Now I'll buy games based on do they seem to offer a different experience and as a result games i'd never have considered turned out to be great additions for this reason alone.. yep it's not the next big thing or has £300+ of plastic toys in the box but I really enjoyed them for what they are. Having a shelf full of reskins of the same game isn't what I'm now looking for in a game.

I thought Search for Planet X was a good multiplayer game. Yes, you work on your own side, but there is a lot of tension racing to discover the planet. Plus you interact directly (or indirectly) with other players, by means of the papers published.
@TheBrokenMeeple4 жыл бұрын
The papers are OK but I never found them that exciting to justify the length of adds. The Solo bot uses them also anyway.

Cant get the love for Arnak. All of its mechanisms are so underwhelming. Deck building but you gonna play most of your cards 1-2 times. Worker placement with 2 workers and only resources on the action spots. Research track is plain boring. Stoned on how can this be you n1. Sad.
@TheBrokenMeeple4 жыл бұрын
It relies on you having to get the most out of the cards you buy and utilise putting importance on card draw and exile abilities. Also items go under your current deck instantly meaning you should draw them next round and you use artifacts the turn you get them. The research track is simple, but has useful bonuses for the assistants and I don't see how it's any different from all the "tracks" you get in other Euros. Kanban has worker placement with only one worker, why is the number significant? Arnak provides a blend of fun mechanics without being too complicated or long or fiddly and yet still looking gorgeous. These days many games always trip over some important aspect like rules, length or the mechanics. Arnak doesn't. I'm just glad we got a list where Bonfire doesn't exist. 😁

There were some good games, but I agree. I could find 40 or 50 games I liked from other years, but less than 20 this year. Some great reprints and expansions, but not a ton of amazing games. But I prefer euro-style games.

Monumental disappeared from my view since the previous Essen, it never got spoke of but looks nice. New York Zoo is on my table yet to be played as it only just came out. Really want to try Honey Buzz. Gods Love Dinosaurs I'm shocked is your No 1 - it's ok, but out of the whole year?
@LeeroyPorkins4 жыл бұрын
@@TheBrokenMeeple I went with games that came out this year (like you), Gods Love Dinosaurs (Being a Dinosaur Nut) is the Tiny Epic Dinosaurs that TED should have been. Though, there is a chance that Cloud City and New York Zoo could go up on the list and dethrone it.

Games take longer to play online than in real life? In my experience it's been the total opposite, most games take half the time they used to when I've played them live. Happy to hear that Lost Ruins of Arnak was your favourite since I got that for myself as a Christmas present and I'll be saving it till the eve. :P

Easily takes longer. You can't manipulate pieces with a mouse and keyboard quicker than with own hand.

Isle of Cats is 2019 and Jaws is just Gloomhaven reprint. Smartphone was also 2018, latest 2019 and even then, meh, it's average. Coatl I've not played but only barely heard of it. I know it was mentioned once on the DT Top 10.
