Even though the Fire Flower is iconic, the Hammer Bros. Suit from SMB3 is more powerful. It can kill any (non-boss) enemy that can be killed in 1 hit. Annoying Thwomp? DEAD. Although the control is a bit weird and it is the rarest power-up, it is the most powerful power-up in SMB3 (other than the Starman and debatably the Tanuki Suit because of the statue).

Brother: tip for Super Mario 3D World: if you run while holding a Koopa Shell and press either ZL or ZR, it turns into a Blue Shell. Even if it eventually makes you dizzy and you have to pause, it gives you plenty of time to do whatever you want with it, especially compared to how short the pause is.

Francis Velasco You're not supposed to use it to hit enemies in front of you, you use it to fight enemies above and below you. The hammer suit is the only way to beat enemies that attack from above.

I thought the blue shell was the most disappointing power-up. The item that gives you the power-up is literally just... a blue shell. Seemed a bit underwhelming. I'm amazed you didn't include the golden fire flower though. It's the fire flower, except on steroids. Not only does it do splash damage when it hits, it also kills enemies that you normally can't kill with a fire flower, and it nukes them into coins as well as blocks and activates item blocks. It's the closest thing to a nuke in a mario game, I love it.

In Super Mario 3D World, you can enter into a Koopa shell that you are carrying by pressing the crouch button in the air. A downside is that you get dizzy and kicked out of the shell after spinning for a while.

You could ride a shell in Mario 64, so that's sort of close to the blue shell. In fact the rideable shell in Mario 64 is one of my favorite power-ups in that game.

the blue shell appeared as a temporary powerup in Mario&Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. it gave Mario the shell and luigi used his hammer to whack Mario, sending him flying out and back like a boomerang. it was only used for puzzles and not combat.

If I had to pick my favourite Mario power-up, other than the ones on this list, I'd go with Spring Mario from Super Mario Galaxy. I like it mostly because everyone else seems to hate it, so I can laugh at their misery while spring jumping around like a pro. It's awesome.

The Star Pipe in Mario Party DS is better than the lamp. It only costs 15 coins, as opposed to 30, and does the same job. Plus it honestly fits better in the Mario universe than a magic lamp. This is Mario we're talking about, not Aladdin.

The Blue Shell is the only way I can convince myself that New Super Mario Bros can be fun. It's like Sonic Rush to where it's fun seeing how long you can boost through a stage. It's the same deal here, and I wish Nintendo could bring this power back for a time attack mode or have it be an actual power up again.

Yeah I remember PKSparkxx stressing how godly the blue shell is and of course, I agree with you guys! I also like the power of the Cloud Flower--it's so unique! I probably would've included the hammer suit somewhere within the top 10 myself, since it does break enemies that are otherwise immune to even fire. In a sense, with the hammer suit, you're practically throwing mini Statue Marios at enemies (don't get me wrong, the Statue Mario still seems a bit harder than the hammers, at least in Super Mario Bros 3). Seriously, I haven't played any of the New Super Mario Bros games (don't get worked up, I hardly have time to afford those luxuries!), but in my experience with SMB3, that feeling of taking out Boos, Thwomps, and a feel other well-defended enemies--good times!

Once upon a time, I was playing MK8 online. I had a Boom Box (because that's what I call it out of laziness) in first place starting on the final lap of 3DS Piranha Plant. I had been recently hit by a Red Shell, so I decided to follow Gambler's Fallacy and waste my item on a second one. A Blue Shell followed that. And one, two, three, four Red Shells followed that. I finished 8th.

Also, as for the Double Cherry, I heard the idea for it came from a glitch during production where a programmer accidentally put two “player 1 spawn” objects in one level, resulting in two Marios that moved in unison; testers liked the idea and the potential for puzzle-solving and it was reworked into an item. Also, as for the NSMB Blue Shell, I enjoyed screwing around with it, but it was a bit too uncontrollable for actually playing the game as intended; lots of bouncing off walls at inopportune times and falling into pits.

Frankly, I can only think of one downside to the Blue Shell. It isn't in that many levels and the ones it is in can be a bit annoying. I don't like having to rely on Mushroom Houses, those random-item blocks, or having to beat a level I dislike for an awesome power-up. It also should appear more (As an actual power-up with similar functionality, none of this 'almost' crap).

'One game, that's all I'm asking." Super Mario 3D World lets you get inside Koopa Shells. Hold onto one, get up to speed and press crouch. You'll disappear into and have a little control over the shell for a length of time before you're forced out because you're dizzy. I know it's not a pound for pound reuse, but still a fun nod to the item.

Anyone who has Mario Party DS should know of the star pipe, a replacement for the magic lamp that while sadly, doesn't have an awesome cutscene, only costs 15 coins. It can be purchased in the shop during the last few turns of a game, and can be found in other places sometimes, like the multicoloured vines in the DK's Stone Statue level.

I would always go into shell-spinning mode when I don't intend to, and I just found it really difficult to control in general and I would always end up bouncing my way into a bottomless pit. Fun fact! You have something similar as the blue shell in 3D world. Simply take a koopa out of it's shell, hold it while running, then jump and press the crouch button to start spining!...it's not as satisfying as the blue shell itself, but meh, at least it's something

Also, on the Double Cherry, when you have like 3, and 2 fall and 1 is probably you, it isn't. If there is at least 1 mario, then you're still alive. Applies to other characters.

Actually, in multiplayer the actual Mario/Whoever has a crown if he has more points than his... opponent? That helps finding out the real Mario because the crown doesn't get cloned.

The blue shell is sort of back in 3D world. If you grab a koopa shell and press the right buttons, you'll go inside the shell and enter a semi-invulnerable state for a short time before being ejected and your character getting dizzy for a few seconds.

Ahh... he's right about the Blue Shell... It IS pretty rare... but when you do get it... I LOVE seeing that stupid Blue Shell break into pieces...

i Have to agree with your choice of number 1. I loved trolling people in mario kart and just having some fun castles with the blue shell. And Trolling Bowser in the final level XD.

I have actually tried the "real Mario death double cherry" trick. It works. I kept track of the real mario , let him die, and continued the level like normal. Me: Holy crap. Did the real Mario just die? O_O

Using the cloud flower as a safety net? I do it but now I see why NOT to here is why : Fall=use cloud= -1 cloud= I probably will need that cloud= I fail.

I really miss the mini mushroom and blue shell of super mario bros DS, I always loved speeding through levels while basically floating as mini mario because those jumps are so much fun. Also another power-up that I also miss was the boo from mario kart DS, being able to steal the other's items was amazing, sometimes getting you a superstar or something on fourth place

Trivia: The Mario flagpole was only used in the first Super Mario Bros until New Super Mario Bros DS, then it became a series standard.

I always thought it was funny with the double cherry how, you could conceivably kill off the "original" character, and now you're just playing as a clone the rest of the time.

Mini Mushroom sucks imo. It leaves you really vulnerable and you die in one hit from enemies. There's not much to it besides the small niches it gives you. I think it's arguably one of the worst power-ups.
