Triangle of Sadness was number one for me personally, but I have not seen Aftersun. I'm now going to watch it based on your recommendation.

No real complaints at all with the top 10 you have, Aftersun, The Northman, Banshees of Inisherin, All Quiet on The Western Front, Top Gun Maverick all finished in my top 10. The Menu and The Batman were also in my top 10, really loved those film. I have to rewatch EVerything Everywhere all at Once again as I wasn't blown away by it with my first watch. 1. Banshees of Inisherin 2. The Northman 3. Aftersun 4. The Menu 5. All Quiet... 6. Tar 7.Top Gun 8. The Batman 9. Great Freedom (released here in 2022) 10. The Quiet Girl

Ruben Östlund is one of my favorite filmmakers, but in my opinion "The Square" is his greatest achievement so far. "Triangle of Sadness" is good, but it sort off fell off the rails for me with its depiction of absurdity as it's sort of an expected depiction of what is absurd, even though brilliantly executed. Although a lot more subtle, I think even "Force Majeure" did a better job at showing the absurd.

Loved the authenticity of Aftersun, from the performances to the dialogue. The hints at her father's troubled past was interesting, felt unsettling. Honestly, I wanted it to go deeper but I feel that it might of clashed with the overall tone. Hot take: I wasn't fond of the "hanging out with the characters on a holiday" all the time, it definitely had it;s moments in that sense. I was just willing the film to escalate and for some conflict to ensue. Thanks for the list, will check out the ones I didn't see yet, nice analysis.

Oh man, please keep going, solid list! For me Everything Everywhere All At Once was a gem of this year - I was kinda confused after Swiss Army Man, but this one put everything in order (maybe because it's not about the relationship with a corpse).

Although I haven't seen a few of the titles mentioned, it seems to be a very spot-on list in my opinion. Even though the Banshees also left a prominent emotional impact on me, it was nowhere near the utter devastation wrecked on me by Aftersun. I was grateful I saw it on a Friday evening, because for days I could hardly think of anything else. So I can fully related to the 'infectious' effect you mentioned. On the overall, this seemed to be a close to perfect example how a great movie can be made without obscene amounts of money, just with a strong concept and a few actors (they do have to be brilliant though as it was the case here).

I agree with this list 100% haven't seen decision to leave or the house yet but I'll make sure I get to those soon. I would have also added Puss in Boots the last wish in there as well just for the villain arcs alone

Good list! I tried to make my own list but I am really far behind catching up with recent movies, even I am a movie maniac I missed a lot last year, but addition to ur list, I would like to mention few: - Athena (Romain Gavras) 9/10 - very experimental movie, just awesome ride - Medieval (Petr Jákl) 8/10 - Brutal Czech's Braveheart movie - Troll (Roar Uthaug) 8/10 - a bit cheesy but they balanced the myth and drama action well Rest are 7/10: - The Pale Blue Eye (Scott Cooper) - I just like Poe's work, especially his poems, good homage! - Hellraiser (David Bruckner) - again I just like Clive Barker's work and the director, especially his movie The Ritual - an as Barker's said not a remake but a good re-configuration, even the original Pinhead liked the movie... - Godzilla vs. Kong (Adam Wingard) - Just stupidly crazy, special effects to the plot, feels like a LSD trip - Carter (Byung-gil Jung) - just non-stop action, good entertainment - Metal Lords (Peter Sollett) - good take on metal music as a movie but I don't think hardcore Metal fans/gatekeepers will like it much.

I found triangle of sadness could have used a bit more subtlety. Many points had me rolling my eyes. Very funny in parts, but for me it was very mid.

Thank you for this excellent selection. I have a lot of films to catch up for 2022. For «The House» the directors had done a real gem with their previous film «This Magnificent Cake!» (2018). I have seen «All quiet...» but I can’t compare with the other adaptations of the novel. I read there was a few liberties made with this 2022 version. «Pearl» is for rent on itunes Canada for...$ 0.99, I don’t know if it’s a good sign or not. 🙂As for any selections I may agree or disagree once films are viewed but I never regretted a movie that I didn’t liked, there is always something to learn from a somewhat bad experience with cinema. Cheers!

@@RenegadeFilm86 it was pretty damn good. Agree with everything you said, the story is actually kinda bland, but the presentation is stellar and really does the legwork. Absolutely worth the 4K purchase. I really enjoyed the final confrontation, and took absolutely no issue with how small scale it is, but I do wish there was an expansion of scale somewhere in the story. I would have perhaps liked to have seen the whole King of Norway annexing the kingdom from his uncle angle explored more. It just felt like there was a lot of potential there that could have been explored, and Eggers clearly wasn't pushed for runtime. Great film overall, would definitely recommend. 8/10, maybe 8.5.

Great list, in some ways similar to mine: **MOVIES (most enjoyable/touching)** 1 - Top Gun: Maverick 2 - The Quiet Girl 3 - The Fabelmans 4 - Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 5 - Everything Everywhere All at Once 6 - Bullet Train 7 - Prey 8 - Triangle of Sadness 9 - Aftersun 10 - RRR I loved everything in "Banshees" except the character (self-mutilating) motivation that I found just dumb. "Pearl" is very high on the runner-up list and "The House" added to my IMBd watchlist.

I don't understand the love for the Norseman. Interesting directing and abysmal everything else (bland plot, horrendous characters, cringe dialogue). A film that is a prime example of it's subject matter used merely as window dressing and on the inside filled with the usual Hollywood cynicism and repetitive garbage.

noooooooo why maverick, i dont get it, why don't i get it? it did nothing for me, bland, predictable, cheesy.. '"don't think, just do" - why is that crap on every list? wtf

I kinda agree with you. It has the most basic, done-to-death story you could think of and a good chunk of the characters, while full of personality, are kinda underdeveloped. The dialogue's pretty corny and the stakes are almost nonexistent. I think the reason why it works for a lot of ppl is the fantastic action, and the passion and heart clearly oozing from the movie. It also has fantastic presentation that's absent from a lot of blockbusters. I enjoyed it but i do think it's kinda overrated.

I'm just relieved we don't get a lot of movies like Maverick, because these movies are painfully dumb and nothing to celebrate. I liked it okay, but it's never going on a Top Anything list for me.
