Of course Holding Out For A Hero has an added bit of depth: Fairy Godmother is most likely singing it about Prince Charming and how she sees him, or wants others to. Here's how I see it: She knows she exists within a fairytale world, as do all of the other characters if the first movie was any indication. What if she also knows she's the villain? She knows that she can't be a villain without a hero to stop her. The song is about the fairy godmother herself, as she is fully aware the story is reaching its climax and she is about to be defeated, so she decides to go out as flashy as possible.

The two religions are tied to each other, even if they don’t agree with one another, and as such they share a lot of history from before the split, such as the story of Moses.

I never knew about the song Biggering until now. I had NO idea that there was a song that more accurately described the Once-lers' descent into villainy! How Bad Can I Be, has his descent as a result of his success blinding him to the damage he's causing and being in denial that his business practice was more harmful than it was helpful. But Biggering has it showing that HE ACTUALLY SEES the damage he's causing, but he keeps going because the _MORE successful he gets_ the _MORE he feels that he deserves_ and never gives the damage he causes a second thought because _he's too focused on himself, his success, and what he wants to care about any one else_ DAMN....we WERE robbed

How Bad Can I Be is their way of trying to make companies like themselves look sympathetic. It's the excuse that they always use. "Oh, I didn't know that we were harming the environment with our factories" "We didn't know that lead paint on children toys would poison the kids" "We didn't know that the mothers in africa would be unknowingly starving their children because of the way our product was presented to them. In most cases, they do know but keep going and brushing the bad consequences under the rug and Biggering shows us both that AND why they do it in the first place. Apparently the government (the american one? i'm not too sure, I could be wrong here) are planning to pour oil in the arctic ocean. Do they know how bad that is? Yes. Do they care? No. Why? Biggering. But with How Bad Can I Be, they decide to lie to us and say "No no no, they did NOT know about the CLEAR amount of damage that they're causing. They're just like naive little children you see. See? Look at how clueless he is! That's totally how they are in real life, kids!"

I heard that a possible reason that "Biggering" was canned in lieu of the cheesier song "How Bad Could I Be" is because "Biggering" actually revealed the greed and pride of big corporations and that illuminations purposefully did not want to reveal that to the children audience. They also feared that the dark message of the song would upset their target children audience and they would loose money in the process. This forced the studio to prioritize a more childish and safer plot that would grab children's attention more easily, with a cheesy villain that does not accurately portray the main themes of the original book. This includes counterintuitive and hyper focused children advertising for the lorax movie, including.... car commercials?! How backwards can you be to advertise a car for the Lorax?! All of this so that Illuminations can appeal to children to make more profits. Ironically, the Lorax movie that we got is shockingly the best representation of this corporate greed and pride outlined in "Biggering": the pride in people leading to greedy actions, with Illumination taking away a deep and meaningful plot that children needed to learn and instead showed a hollow, corporate approved children's movie

It reminds me of this bit in Doug Walkers review of The Lorax. Chart guy 1: But you don’t understand. We don’t want people to feel bad about themselves. Chart guy 2: Yes, people are less likely to buy things when they feel bad. Chart guy 1: Its easier to show a clear right and wrong message so that no kids are confused. NC: But maybe they SHOULD be confused. Hell, maybe what you are doing is confusing them in a different way. Look! When you make your characters less human, you suck out the humanity, meaning people are less likely to see what they can become. Just like a delicate seed can grow a great oak, so can a faulty message grow a big problem. Chart guy 2: Yes but clearly we show it in a satirical sense so that makes it all right. NC: In what way? Can’t help but think that if they had left “Biggening,” in the Lorax movie then it would have been remembered far better than it is now. This is exactly it, along with tearing down any excuses of plausible deniability; instead of a song about a corporate bigwig villain knowingly causing destruction to further his own goals, we got a song about a gullible hipster victim blinded against his cruel actions by the dollar signs. The original song painted corporations in too harsh of a light and exposed the dark underbelly of the corporate world; the corporations funding the movie didn't like it, so they had the writers tweak the lyrics and insert them into a colorful pop song to play down the evils of corporations... though in a way, 'How Bad Can I Be?' reveals exactly how corporations get away with their crimes by hiding behind a guise of being proactive and well-intentioned.

@@KororaPenguin He is pretty tragic in the final film too. The song they used "How Bad Can I Be" is very similar to Hellfire in that the villain is unable to accept they are the bad guy and makes excuses for their actions. In Hellfire it was Frollo blaming his actions on Esmarelda, and in How Bad Can I Be, The Once-ler is making excuses for his unsustainable business practices by saying "Hey I donate what is basically pocket change to charity". But the sad is thing is he believes his own lies that he isn't bad and doesn't see the error of his ways until after he cuts down the last tree. I always found The Lorax is a good cautionary tale for promoting sustainable business practices. If he listened to the Once-ler and worked on a compromise such as planting two trees for everyone he cuts down, everyone would be happy.

I don't mind it either. As Josh says it easy to blame the Once-ler's destruction on carelessness and I think that might have been the idea. The Once-ler does make a point in the original story about why he doesn't shut down or downsize his operations. His workers have to put food on the table and they can't do that if he does something that compromises his business. I always viewed the message of the Lorax of being one about sustainable growth i.e. planting additional trees for every tree you cut down. The song from the final film was high-lighting that at first, he wasn't really hurting anyone. He just didn't realize he needed to replinish the supploy of trees for his business until it was too late. He was never truly evil in the story as you can tell by the fact he has regretted his actions ever since that last tree fell.

The moment I heard THE guitar, instant satisfaction, kinda makes me want to do a rewrite on The Lorax, the original plan seemed to be SO MUCH BETTER Biggering is a banger we were robbed from, and I'll never forgive Illumination for taking it away.

God that number 1 gave me chills. Christ we were robbed. It's almost like the anti-capitalist message of the story was completely lost on the corporation that was adapting it.

the number one spot made me realize something... no matter how much we blame greed and envy for their actions it's pride that made me see that even the most envious Karen or the most greedy company is guilty of pride because that what makes them see that they deserve their position... and anyone can fall into this hole of pride... but it's their decision to fall down the hole and what other sin it can make... the lesson is "there are 7 sins but only 1 fuels them all"

I think "How bad can I be" is still a good song that picks on corporations for their lame excuses and justifications for the terrible actions they choose to take, but "Biggering" is just so much more impactful and its message is much more broad. It points a finger at everyone and says anyone could end up like the Onceler, not just on the corporate scale, but also on the individual and personal scale as well.

I'm not sure what other lists are coming down the line, but I'm shocked there was no Dr. Horrible. The villain song from the similar-energy musical episode of Buffy is one of my all time favorites, too.

When you were building up the fake out with Zootopia, I was hoping you were actually alluding to Cats Don't Dance. When I turned out to be right, I pumped both of my fists in the air and silently screamed "YES". So happy to see one of my favorite childhood movies getting some recognition.

Only just found this video. But I fully support the Shrek 2 and Original Lorax choices. They really work as villain songs, and the Original Lorax really explored greed and pride, I really wish we didn't get robbed, but of course they couldn't sell merchandise if they actually made the movie like that.
