Some people say that we never really moved on from pagan sacrifices. Now we just sacrifice millions of people to the Car God. Blood for the Car God!!! It was a great series, especially earlier on when Richard Jenkins appeared more often. Such a great actor. As the show progressed they started doing a little bait-and-switch during the cold opening sequence, setting things up to appear as if one person would die before 'killing' someone else.

It became a game in our household to guess the death as soon as the episode started. My fave one is one I managed to guess correctly. The show had been known for getting wilder and more absurder deaths. Anyway, a man was jogging in the hills, and I was like, er.. there's nothing that can kill him... a mountain lion? The blue ice thing is one of the best. Not because of the death itself, but how we saw how one little incident completely unrelated to this woman led to her death -Man and daughter release bird -That bird poops on the hat of a man on the street -the man on the street goes into a store to wash up and is told by the owner not to flush the toilet -the man from the street flushes the toilet anyway, making the owner have to clean up -Owner calls wife to let her know he’ll be home a little later than planned because he’s cleaning bathroom -wife isn’t getting good reception so she goes outside to hear her husband better -SPLAT All because this man and his daughter released a bird.

Bruno Baskerville Walsh's 1972 death hit me hard for some reason. So high on acid he jumped off the roof thinking he could fly. It seemed realistic cos incidents like that happened to too many young people in the early 70s. In the late 80s though, this guy in my high school died while high on LSD. He drowned. He thought he could walk on water.

Along with an awesome song, which at times sounded warped along with the hallucinations (people's heads getting bigger) showing how high on acid Bruno was. Then seeing him trying to fly and the sound of something dropping heavily, both Cindy and Bruno so stoned they didn't realize Bruno had dove on to a parked car, dead.

Perhaps my favourite part is that in some of this deaths you think "ok this one dies" like the man cleaning the toilet. I was sure he was goin to slip and break his neck and then happens other thing. And this is the terrible/amazing thing of death, the line on being alive is so thin we don't see his random and ironic ways. And when my dad and mom died, this show help me to cope and accept that we have lo live reconciling life and death.

It was a very nice case of "the butterfly effect" and only time they played that concept. Anahid was killed by blue ice. It is a form of ice that accumulates on the output of a planes residual water drainage system. This happened on older model planes, but because of such accidents, newer models have systems to prevent large pieces of ice from accumulating.

@Bryan Black Hello, three months later to say that blue ice comes from airplanes, the blue water they use in their toilets (used to?) leak occasionally, and it can build up on the side of the plane in a big chunk of ice which can warm up and break off as the plane descends. i dunno if its ever actually caused any deaths but it has caused property damage in the past!

I love all of these, but I would probably have replaced one of them with the death (I think it was in season five) where the woman gets advice from her therapist about standing up for herself, and you see the different way all the people in her life respond to her newfound assertiveness. I think it ended with her leaving her husband, who gets into a tussle with her in which he accidentally shoves her so she gets skewered on a poker next to the fireplace. It had the most fascinating build-up to that last moment. Also the great fakeout in season two where a guy almost falls from the top of a construction site, but his buddy pulls him back. Unfortunately, his lunchbox falls and hits a passer-by walking underneath.

I was watching this series last December (2023) while my boyfriend was dying of cancer. I was his caregiver and couldn't leave him. It was Christmas time and I couldn't celebrate it. It was just a blur. Often he'd go out of consciousness during the show (a part of dying). I'd cry and cry at the death I was watching and dying I was experiencing. The last episode was the worst for me. I was crying and crying and turned around my boyfriend wasn't even conscious enough to talk to. I felt ao alone. That was a poignant episode but it was too much for me. The message : everyone goes. By the way he passed away January 18th 2024. I still have grief attacks. The show did help me accept death and remind me that death is a part of life.

The traditional death ritual is certainly one of my favorite things about this show. I love how even the most tragic death usually feels hilarious, and how deceptive the writers are to make you believe somebody's gonna die in a certain way- then dies in a sudden surprising way or somebody else actually dies. I'm kind of amazed that Nathaniel's epic death- which is, if I remember correctly the first death- didn't make it to the top 10! Anyhow, great video :)

Some good ones in there, but my favorite is still the porn star who electrocuted herself in the bathtub. Second favorite is the lawyer who ran home on his lunch hour to erotically asphyxiate, and lost control of things. (They found him with the lemon wedge still in his mouth.) Some of these, like that one and the lady who thought the sex dolls were the Rapture, were based on actual events.

I'm too lazy but I always thought it would be a great idea to splice out all the opening death scenes. Even after 5 season many were total surprises. You would watch a few seconds and think "I know whats going to happen here" and then someone else would die totally unexpectedly. After many years I'm binging the series for maybe the 3rd or 4th time. Of course I binge Dexter about once every year since its release. Anyhoo, thanks for compiling these. My favorites are the frying pan to the head and the woman walking outside for a better cell signal and being decapitated by a block of ice.

I think the most heartbreaking ones was the young legless veteran having his sister help him commit suicide. The death of the young man with terminal cancer that Nate comforted during it was also hard to watch. Of course the death of Nate was,too. To me,the grossest was the baker in the mixer and the elevator one shown here.
@johnofthesouth5425

The terminal cancer death was surreal!! I remember after thinking, OMG what the f**k did I just witness! The acting was soo good in that scene. The poor guy was absolutely petrified of passing while struggling to breathe properly. Nate didn't know what to do other than just be present with him as he slowly and agonisingly faded. Then it was over.
@JenniferRice

@johnofthesouth5425 Well said. This death gave me the same emotions like that of some of the expected deaths. For ex,the horror film starlet's cocaine overdose was not a shock,but the rapid sudden violence of it was still horrifying to watch like the terminally ill patient Nate sat with. Then there was Nate's death itself,which was not expected nor seen happening...he was just gone.
